(John was an older brother of Fethias Woolsey. They were the sons of the blacksmith Israel Woolsey and wife Isabell E. Newberry.) John and his brother Fethias went to the California gold fields about 1851, after John was killed in a mining accident, Fethias returned home by way of the Isthmus of Central America, and Cuba, about 1857.
