ON-LINE: DEATH VALLEY IN '49 - Chapt XVII - Pioneering - California - "I turn back to give some incidents of life in the mines, and some description of those pioneer gold days. I have spoken of Moore's Flat, Orleans Flat and Woolsey's Flat, all similarly situated on different points of the mountain, on the north side of the ridge between the south and Middle Yuba River, and all at about the same altitude. A very deep canon lies between each of them, but a good mountain road was built around the head of each canon, connecting the towns. There were several Woolseys and Woolsey families that were in California by 1850, early enough to make some sort of impression that would cause Woolsey Flats to be named after them.

James Bradshaw Woolsey (son of John Bradshaw and Elizabeth Bradshaw) married Hannah Reeve and was one of the few miners who didn't ruin his life, nor his family's life, by chasing the "elephant" in CA.

My great-grandfather George Washington Hickerson and his wife Sarah Woolsey's brother, William Woolsey, were there in 1850 in Louisville, El Dorado Co, chasing the elusive "gold dust". George Washington Hickerson did not have much success, and he turned to gardening and a "general store" before he returned home to his wife and family in Utah. He made this statement, when he was sick and lonely, in an 1850 letter to his wife, Sarah: "Experience teaches a dear school, and fools learn in no other!" Unfortunately, his sons caught the "gold fever" and spent useless lives chasing from one gold find to another. William Woolsey had the "fever" for the rest of his life, until his old age, moving from gold dig to gold dig, with the lure of riches "just around the corner", or with the next turn of the shovel.

It's amazing how the discovery of gold in Sutter's mill race by members of the Mormon Battalion, set off this amazing emigration into California from men and

I haven't found any record where Frances Woolsey grew up and married, so she may have died early (after 1911?). She is only distantly related to Luther S. Woolsey.

Audubon J. Woolsey. Among the prominent representatives of the legal profession in Oakland is numbered Audubon J. Woolsey, who has a large and representative clientele and is regarded as one of the strongest and most dependable members of the Alameda county bar. Mr. Woolsey was born on the 22nd of Sep 1879 in the city in which he now lives and is and son of James B. and Hannah M. (Reeve) Woolsey. The father crossed the plains to Calif in 1850 and for a time worked in the mines. He then located in Berkeley and farmed one hundred and sixty acres of land, lying on the line between Berkeley and Oakland. This tract is now very valuable and on it many fine homes have been built. however, Mr. Woolsey did not profit from this enhancement of value, as he sold the land many years ago and retired, his death occurring in August 1918 at the advanced age of ninety-six years. He was a man of prominence in his community and served one term as a member of the board of county supervisors. Hannah M. Reeve was brought across the plains in her young girlhood and was md to Mr. Woolsey in Gilroy, CA. Her death occurred in Jan 1927.

    A. J. Woolsey attended the public and high schools of Berkeley and then entered the Univ of CA, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1903. He then began the study of land in 1909 was admitted to the bar. In his practrice he has been more than ordinarily successful, being regarded as a sound and safe advisor in legal matters and reliable as a trial lawyer.

Mr. Woolsey was united in marriage to Miss Mary Priestley, who was born and reared in this state, and they are the parents of a daughter, Constance. Mr. Woolsey is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Athens Club and the California State Bar Association. A man of sterling character, fine public spirit, courteous and friendly manner, he commands to a marked degree the esteem of his fellowmen and is regarded as one of the representative men of his city.
