gold fields about 1851, after John was killed in a mining accident, Fethias returned home by way of the
Isthmus of Central America, and Cuba, about 1857.

"While visiting with Mr. & Mrs. John T. Woolsey of Rt. 12, Greeneville, Tennessee, he told the story that one of his uncles went to Calif hunting for gold. He said the uncle sold his share of gold for a gold watch which had been in the family all these years. This was Fethias Woolsey, fourth son of Israel. He came back to Tennessee ca 1858 and was in the 1860 census
a bachelor who was 40 years old. He had been in Georgia after returning from the West Indies when he wrote the enclosed letter, in 1839.

"Georgia the 22 1839 Dear father I am permited one time more to inform you that that i am Still in the land of the living and enjoying moderate healt at this time though i had a very Serious attack of the fever since I arived from the west indeas and is fact i had given up all hopes of ever seing or having any more coispondance with you But thank god I have recoverd to health and strength again I have removed from Charestown because of the Sickness I have taken charge of a large steam mill for a little while i am vary Sory that I took thet voyage as it has Cost me a good deal of money and trouble i have not heard from you since last Spring Vary anxeious to hear from you all you rite soon to me and let me no how you all are and about Alexand & Andrew when you rite direct your to barkcamp postoffice Berk C..

I have nothing very much to rite to you only i am not maried yet and no prospects of it i have thrown my Self away to be an old batcheler i beleiv as i fancy nobody and nobody fancys me i think i must rig up a little and See if i cant raise a Spark among Some of our Cuntry girls So nothing more But remaining yours Respectfully & Affectionate Son Woolsey A D You mus excuse my writing as i am much huried & not in order for writing tell mother that So Shure as i do got maried I will Come to See the old place one time more of i can raise money enough to pay expences
