NEWS:
1900 May 21 Oakland TRIBUNE 21 May 1900
E. H. WOOLSEY is claimed by Death.
For Many Years he had charge of county jail. He was a member of the Southern Pacific Shotgun Brigade.
Eburn Haight Woolsey, a pioneer of California, died yesterday morning at his home, 250 Twelfth street, after a brief illness. Asthma was the cause of death. He came to CA around Cape Horn with ex-Sheriff Jerry Tyrrell in 1849. For a time he worked oyster beds along the water front for the San Francisco market and was one of the four police officers when Charles McKay was Town Marshall. Later he was a Deputy Sheriff and Jailer under Sheriffs Tyrrel and Hale, and when he lost that position he was employed as a watchman by the Southern Pacific Company. He was one of the charter members of the Oakland Guard, organized in 1861.

Deceased was a native of Webster county [there is no Webster Co, NY www], New York and was 63 years old. He was a widower, but leaves four children, Mrs. Birdie Sinclair, Mrs. Carrie B. Murphy, Frank K. and John J. W. Woolsey. During the waterfront troubles Woolsey was very prominent on the front. He represented the railroad and was a member of the shotgun brigade.

CORR:
2006 January 9, from Ron Sinclair to Wilford Whitaker

Hello, and thank you for the additional Woolsey information you sent. I am still digesting the second group - have found a lot I didn't have.

Regarding my Grandfather and Grandmother, however, it appears some small corrections are required. William Sinclair and Mabel Bell Woolsey (known as Birdie) were married in Estrella, CA on May 9, 1892. Although of Scotch ancestry, William was born in Northern Ireland in 1849. William and Birdie had 4 children and William died on May 16, 1900.

On March 13, 1904 at Estrella, California, Birdie married John Riley Sweeney and they had 1 child, Dwight Sweeney. Birdie died on Dec. 2, 1907. William and Birdie are buried together in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

The Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church near Estrella ( in Central CA about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles ) burned in 1894 and was not rebuilt in that location. The adjacent cemetery remains.

I have other material regarding the above, as well as additional information about Birdie's sister Carrie Woolsey and brother Frank Woolsey, if you have any interest?

It seems certain that Eburn Haight and Dr. E.H. Woolsey were 2 different persons and yet there appears to be a connection in several instances.

I have also several sheets on the Haight family, sent to me by a Ruthie Anderson and in which there is mention of several Woolseys. Would you be interested in copies?

I found this today, scan down and you will see Dr. E.A. Woolsey::

THIRTY YEARS AGO IN OAKLAND
Thirty years ago the Oakland Daily Transcript, a large four-page journal, seven columns to the page, and carrying a surprising amount of advertising matter, was the foremost daily nwspaper in this field. I see by an October 27th, 1874 , copy, now before me, that A.W. Bishop was its editor and one of its two owners.

The principal illustration is an engraved view of the town's chief hotel, the Grand Central, a 240-room edifice, four stories high, with central tower, and mansard roofs, situated on Twelfth street, opposite the now Dewey theatre. J.C. Olmstead was the landlord.

Oakland then had three banks - the Alameda County Savings and Loan Society, B.T. Ferris, president; the Oakland Bank of Savings, P.S. Wilcox, president, and the Union Savings Bank, A.C. Henry, president.

I note that there was a Mount Diablo stage line operating then, and that Wm. Sohst had a carriage works, and was also an undertaker, at Eight and Franklin. J.F.W. Sohst yet runs some of the same business.

J.J. O'Brien, afterward a great San Francisco drygoods dealer, was in business at Thirteenth and Broadway, and A.A. Moore was district attorney and Henry Morse, sheriff.

Dr. E.A. Woolsey was making money in those days, for in the Board of Supervisors; proceedings he is down for $120 for "post mortems."

    RECORD:
Copied from microfilm of the Paso Robles Record - 2 Jun 1900 -- Estrella Items :
Mrs Wm. Sinclair still lies in a very critical condition.

Mr. Wm. Sinclair's death which occurred on the 16th of this month, cast quite a gloom on everyone here. He was a most honored citizen, kind husband and father besides being a deacon in the Presbyterian church and a teacher of the bible class in the same church of which he was a charter member. He was also a school trustee and deputy assessor. At the time of his death his wife was lying near death's door and it was thru worry and exposure that the dread disease pneumonia with a complication of other diseases which he had not strength to stand.

He leaves a wife and four small children the oldest but seven years and the youngest just two. He was a devoted Christian. We miss him and know that the church and community have both a great loss. He was a brother of Daniel Sinclair and Mr. E. Fritzinger of this place where he had lived for some 20 years.

A the time of his death he was 51 years old. Another death occurred in the same family a week later, Mrs. Sinclair's father, Mr. Woolsey who resided here (for?) a short time a few years ago and still owns a ranch in this vicinity, died at his home in San Francisco. He had been telephoned for and came here when Mrs. Sinclair was (so?) sick and returned home only to go to his last home himself.
