It should be noted here that our family names do not hold a COMMON spelling.  Though Eprhiam's book doesn't state much about the instance of the name change except to mention that his father had changed it from JOHANSSON to SOLBERG as the name was an uncommon one.  The current belief on the matter of the two different surnames stems from conversations that we have had with Roy "Carl" Ephriam Sohlberg.  It has been claimed that Karl when he emigrated to the United States became a 'mason' and since he had several properties in Wisconsin, he used to visit these properties often.  There may have been another reason for these visits, apparently, Roy recalls that during a visit up north, Karl, with Bertil and Roy, would go to meetings.  There happend to be a sign on one of the buildings reading "No Gentiles Allowed."  Apparently Karl thought his name SOLBERG sounded too 'Jewish' and changed it.  Roy also stated that Bertil believed that when Karl and Eprhiam emigrated to New York at different times, they were given different surnames.  Thus the product of SOHLBERG and SOLBERG.  What is even more confusing is the statement that Ephriam made about Klaus Malcom Teodor JOHANSSON.  After a early roaming life called Rallar, 'Teodor' as he was called, decided that his last name was much to common, and he changed it to the name of his home county Solbergsa Socken (County).  The website for the Sweden-L (or Sweden-D) SE-FAQs Website, states: "Patronymics were used in rural areas and among day laborers in urban centers until around 1860 when it became fashionable to adopt permanent surnames. Gradually people began to substitute their patronymic surname with their father's surname or another surname. In 1901 the first law to protect family names in Sweden was passed."  At the time of this writing, we have been unable to locate the County of Solbergsa or Solberga Socken.  See notes about  Ephriams book, for greater details.

Karl "Carl or Charlie" T(eodor) SOHLBERG
On an interview with Roy, he spoke concerning his father.  He told us that Carl sold player piano's, shortly before the advent of the Juke Box.  When the buisness failed, all the piano's stored in the house, and that of his neighbors, were chopped up and used for fire wood.  He took to making wine in the celler.  Carl was a drinker, and because of his outrageous behavior, he was placed in Kankakee Mental Institution, later to be released.  When the times were good, both he and his partner (Mr. Berlin) purchased some property in Adams Wisconsin.  This property was used as a summer pasture, then primarily for fishing.  It was called the Little Silver Lake, an old wooden homstead later stood there for quite some time before vandals destroyed the building.  After Carl died, the property was bequeathed to his three children.  William, sold his early, Roy held on to his for quite some time before selling his share out to Bertil.  After some investigation, we've found that Bertil sold the property.  Currently the Wisconsin DNR holds it as part of the States Park System.  It is now called Sohlberg Silver Lake, and it houses many endangered plant species.

"There was a year of great sadness in our family.  1902 only one year after our trip to Gevle Fair.  Karl and I lost our only sister, Edit Maria.  She was only twelve years old at the time.  She was the sunbeam in our home, and many a person would turn to take a second look at her beauty, her flowing blond locks and beautiful blue eyes.  She was mothers pride and joy but we could not keep her.  She left an great emtiness in our family.  I was only six years olt at the time, although I diden't understand it then I realize now how hard it must have been on my parents, and I will never forget how cried and prayed night and day by Edits sickbed.  It seemed to me that she never slept during the entire illness.  Time heals all wounds slowly, but the memory lives on forever.  My dad and Edit are borth burried in the family plot in Forsmarks Kyrkogaard (Cemetery)"(SIC)

Notes and Resources
1It should be noted that not only did Ephriam wite stories under the pen name of "Alaska-Rospiggen", but he also wrote his life story.  Entitled "Rainbow Lakes Estates, Florida 1965: Grandma and Grandpa Solberg's Life Story"  Much of the family tree as we have it comes from this source. 2Hult" is is not a very frequent word now,  and many Swedes have only met it in connection with place-names.
Its meaning is "grove", a "little wood". Most -hult names are to be found in
Småland.
The word refers to both pine and leaf woods. In Aneboda parish in Småland there is a village called Förhult, which probably originally as"fyri hult" = fir, pine grove.
