RARDEN Miscellaneous notes:
Kiowa County, KS lookup reported this: Fairlawn Cemetery, Greensburg, KS. Albert Rarden", d. 6/25/1973. And in Mullinville cemetery, "Joseph E. Rarden" 1864-1921; and "Bertha Rarden" l879-April 25, 1942. These would be our Rardens, brother to James Stafford and John. There is also a "Lucy May Rarden" 1905-1921, in the Mullinville cemetery. Could well be dtr. of Joseph and Bertha. Joseph E. and Bertha E. Rarden(J.E.-1864-1928 & B.E.
Dec 17, 1879--April 25, 1942) are buried close together

James Stafford RARDEN
--Family Notes from Fred From 1914 to 1923 family homesteaded south of Hasty, CO. (sometimesdescribed as south of Caddoa, CO.). Directions to site: turn right(south) at Hasty, proceed two (2) miles, cross John Martin dam, turnright (west) after crossing dam, proceed two (1) mile, turn left (south),proceed twelve (12) miles; at site of old Indian Rock School, which in1976 contained a stock tank and a power pole, proceed five (5) milesfurther south, 1/2 mile west to homestead site which is described asbeing the NE corner of the half section (FAR, 9/21/00) Family story tells of a twin child to Jennie, sex not stated, who died at birth Family story says James Stafford Rarden moved to Missouri from WestVirginia with the family; left Missouri w/malaria as a young man, found himself at Dodge City, Kansas; drove freight team of oxen btwn Dodge City and Ft. Scott, Kansas Also found some Flinns farming in the same township; very likely head of house was brother of my grandmother, Esta Mae, married to James Stafford. Family stories had the Flinns and Rardens being associated and neighbors in both Kansas and Colorado. "Tribal migration" I think I have heard it referred to. Incidentally, the 1900 Census for Ford County lists "Taylor, Thomas J." "partner" residing at the same location with "James Stafford(head), Esta M.(wife), Robert L.(son), and John W.(son)". Ever heard anything about James Stafford having a farming partner? 1920 Census for Colorado, Bent County, Caddoa precinct, and found the enumerations for James Stafford, Emma Mae, Robert L., John W. (these last two born of Nancy Stalker), Leonard F., Charles E., Thelma A., Walter O., and James S. Jr., along with James W. Flynn(sp) -- all 10(ten) living in the same slab-stone, sod roofed homestead building!! I visited the site in about 1976 w/Walter and Thelma; buildings long gone, but they both remembered where they had been located on the 160 acres. Somewhere I seem to recall that James Stafford did live for a time at Ft. Scott; in fact I have a note that he married Jennie Stalker in Ft. Scott. Don't know precisely where that info came from, but it would indicate some link. |
