The Nicholas Family:
Wales, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas

After the death of Evelyn Ann "Evie" HOHE in July of 1999, we've been seeking connections to her foggy past.  Though we've made considerable headway on her lineage, we have reached a skeleton in the family closet.  The Nicholas family is our Mystery Family, surrounded by much intrigue.  Slow plodding through faded memories, and little available information this is the tree that we have managed to trace thus far.  We have excluded much of the known living persons in connection with this family.  This is for their protection, I name only one, for the sake of proof of our connection to the NICHOLAS family.

Contact with Clifford Cecil NICHOLAS has been limited to one conversation, in which he refused to take any part, for understanable reasons.  He is the son of David Nicholas NICHOLAS, and Minnie Emma RARDEN.

According to the information that we had, the Social Security Death Index, showed a David NICHOLAS born in 19011.  This was the estimated time of birth at the start of our search.   My father ordered his SS-5 on a hunch that this was the correct David.  While we were waiting for this information, we sought out copies of the City Directory in 1922 for Des Moines Iowa.  Although David isn't listed in this City Directory, I note it here, because this was our next step in making a connection to David's father.  We received the application for his social security number.  According to the SS-52 (The Application for a Social Security Number Dated 8 May 1937) he was born in Colfax Iowa, to Nicholas D. NICHOLAS and Hellena "Hellen A. or Ellen" CONWAY.  From this we know that David was still living in Des Moines during the 1937.  It isn't known if David and Minnie were still married at this point (residential information on other pertaining documents apply E 32 St. Court).  However Minnie's Marriage to Cecil Floyd MILLION was in 1943.  We however did locate David and Minnie in the 1920 Federal Census in Minneola, Appleton County, Kansas.  At some point David was in North Creek, Warren County, New York and this is listed as his last residence.  Since the Social Security Death Index states that his benefits were later sent to Lake City, Columbia County, Florida.  It is possible that David later remarried, and has living family members still residing there.  We know that he died sometime in October of 1980.

We are told that David was in the Military during World War I and II, however it isn't known at this moment which service he entered in.

We know very little about Minnie.  Submitted family group sheets to the Latter Day Saints, (Ancestral File (tm)3) include her first husband David.  However she is listed in the Census for 19004 in Clark County under John and Elizabeth RARDEN.  What is surpassing is how David and Minnie met.  David an Iowa boy by birth seems to have resided most of his early years in Iowa.  Minnie, is from Kansas.  There is a supposition that perhaps David had family in Kansas that he stayed with, in order to have met and married her.

There was an important discovery of the 1900 Federal Census in Jasper County Iowa, where Nicholas is found residing in the home of George RINKER8,9.  The discovery of the marriage of George and Mary NICHOLAS led us to the next leap in the family tree.  The important mention of the 1922 Des Moines City Directory5 comes into play here.  Since we knew at that point that David Nicholas NICHOLAS had the initials of N. or a D. in his name it was supposition that the city directory entry for N. D. NICHOLAS was the one in the same.  We perceived that there might be a connection to the name.  Proven correct by the application for a social security number.  Nicholas D. NICHOLAS is not listed any other way in these records.  As in the 1920 Census6, found living in Des Moines, Nicholas is listed also as N.D. NICHOLAS.  With the wife's name of Ellen.  There is an important point here.  His family was from Wales, and had immigrated to Illinois before his birth.  A search for a place of death, and time of death should provide us with an area of birth within Illinois to further make connections to the surname.   We also know that he passed away before the federal requirement of Social Security Numbers (in 1957) There is an important point to make with Hellen.  The census6 copy was bad, though she listed the time of her immigration to the US in 1881 (the same year as her estimated birth).  Additionally she was naturalized in 1885.  A search for naturalization records should help make additional connections to her family.

8Re: Nicholas in Polk or Jasper County in 1910. Unfortunately, the 1910 census is not indexed for Iowa, only for 21 states, and Iowa is not one of them. Jasper county has 2 full rolls of census sheets and Polk has 3 rolls. Ancestry's RedBook indicates that an Iowa state census was taken in 1905. Nicholas Nicholas, single, age 28, born Dec 1872, living as a boarder with a George Rinker? family, on Spring St/Ave?, Colfax Town, Washington Township, Jasper County, Iowa in 1900. He was born in Illinois, his parents were born in Wales. He was a coal miner. The citation is hard to read, it is Jasper County, ED 38, page 8, line 92. 9George Rinker at 180 Spring, Colfax, IA in 1900 (11 Dec 1900 to be exact).
Mary A. Rinker was 35 yrs old in 1900 and was born in Illinois.  Her parents were both born in Wales!!!
