SECTION 1(a) B 34 SUBJECT CATEGORY: COUNTY ATLASES RECORD GROUP TITLE: SUB-GROUP HEADING: Historical Atlases SERIES TITLE: NOTES: Two types of county atlases exist for Ontario: atlases which document a single county or adjacent counties (e.g., Wentworth County; Lincoln and Welland Counties); and Dominion of Canada atlases containing supplements relating to specific counties. Both the Dominion and the county atlases were sold by subscription, and this influenced the type of information which can be found within them. Typically, they contain a history of the county proper and histories and detailed maps of its constituent townships and communities. Names are recorded on lots; in the case of the Dominion supplements, only the names of subscribers are entered, while the names of all occupants are recorded on the maps found in the county atlases. Prominent county residents often paid to have biographical sketches, portraits, and illustrations of their residences and places of business published in the atlases. As well, the names of subscribers and biographical information frequently were incorporated into business and/or patrons'directories. This microfilm was prepared in 1967. The Topographical atlas of the Province of Ontario by counties was included because it is of the same general period and because it contains maps of counties such as Renfrew, which are not found in the other atlases. Researchers interested in the general maps and text which comprised the major portion of the Dominion atlases should examine Reel 1, #3. Other entries referring to the Dominion atlases contain only the specific county portion of the atlas. Microfilm Reference # B 34 Reel 1 Description 1.
