INTRODUCTION TO THE SNODGRASS SOURCE BOOKS The state source books were created by Charlou Dolan. She began this massive project ca. 1986, organizing and typing the accumulation of Snodgrass research when she got "boxes and boxes" of files from Scott F. Hosier (he was Editor of The MACE 1978-1986). Those files formed the nucleus of the "source books". During her tenure as Editor of The MACE, 1987-1993 and since, Charlou has been hard at it: gathering and entering into the source books Snodgrass data, making trips to courthouses and libraries across the country, collecting files & family data from past & present members of The Snodgrass Clan Society, as well as soliciting information from many other Snodgrass researchers. The source books are one of the best tools available to anyone researching Snodgrass. One for nearly every state, each is organized by county and within each county, info is arranged by date. These source books contain a wealth of Snodgrass research. Census readings - wills - deeds - misc. court records - marriages - deaths - obits - histories - Bible records - even queries found in genealogical publications ... all Snodgrass! Charlou's comments on the collected data are shown as < . > throughout. Any comments marked [ . ] or [vss -] were added by me, Violet "Suzie" Snodgrass Schoolcraft beginning in 1997, the result of my reading the source books and tracing families since I first joined The Snodgrass Clan Society in 1993. PLEASE keep in mind that the source books are meant to be a reference work - they give us an idea of what has already been found. Perhaps more importantly, they show us where to look next for what is yet to be done! REMEMBER, extractions & transcriptions, notes & comments may have errors or may be missing certain portions of the original material. ALWAYS refer to the original source material whenever possible, using the source books as a starting point to guide you in your individual research. If it is SNODGRASS we at The Snodgrass Clan Society continue to collect it! Please send items (with sources cited!) you want to share with others to: Will Johnson, hosting the Snodgrass Source Books you are reading. Email: wjhonson@aol.com Paul D. Barr is a valued citizen of Weeping Water (a resident of the First Ward), where he is engaged in business as a fire insurance and real-estate agent, and as collector and conveyancer, and holds the offices of Justice of the Peace and Notary Public. Mr. Barr was born in Greene County, Ohio, July 15, 1849. His father, John W. Barr, was born in Virginia or Pennsylvania, and went to Ohio when a young man, and as a pioneer of Allen County, hewed out a farm for himself in the wilderness. He always lived in that part of the country after his removal to it until death called him hence, in 1875. He was an upright, conscientious man, and a consistent member of the Baptist Church, as was also his good wife, whose maiden name was Phoebe Snodgrass. She was the mother of eight children, all of whom lived to maturity, namely: John C., Joseph M., James V. B., Robert H., Henry D., Elizabeth, Minerva J. and Sally A. The four oldest boys served in the army, and two of them never came back alive. Robert II was killed while gallantly fighting at Atlanta, Ga.; Joseph was wounded at Harper's Ferry, Va., and was transferred to the invalid corps at Columbus, Ohio, in Camp Chase, and there died from the effects of his wound April 5, 1864. Sally married C. C. Hadsell, of Waterloo, Ind., and they are now living there; Minerva is in Waterloo, Ind.; John C. is in Ottawa, Ohio; James lives at Creston, Iowa, where he is engaged in the mercantile business; Elizabeth died in Allen County, Ohio. The mother of this family was born in Virginia in 1812, and accompanied her father, Daniel S. Snodgrass, to Ohio when young, and there lived until her marriage. She died in Weeping Water, Jan. 23, 1883. The subject of this sketch was but a babe when his parents moved to Allen County, and he was there reared amid pioneer influences. In 1861 he left the parental home and entered the printing-office of the Auglaize County Democrat, serving an apprenticeship of one year; from there he went to Lima, OH, and again entered a printing office, that of the Gazette, and was employed there a year and a half. In 1863 he was called home to stay with his parents, his older brothers having joined the army. He assisted in the management of the old homestead until 1865, when, the war being over, two of his brothers came back and relieved him from further duty. Thus gaining a thorough, practical knowledge of the art preservative, he next went into the office of the Allen County Democrat. Eighteen months later he was elected Assessor of his home ward, being then but twenty-five or twenty-six years of age. He discharged the onerous duties of that responsible office in a manner to call forth the warm praise of his fellow-citizens. He subsequently engaged in teaching, a vocation to which he was well adapted both by temperament and education. At one time he was appointed delinquent tax collector for the city of Lima, which office he filled satisfactorily. After his term of office expired he came West, abandoning the profession of teacher, he having taught nine terms. He also read law one year with Judge McBride. When he first came to Cass County, he stopped in Centre Precinct for a few months, and then spent the following winter in Iowa. He came back in the fall of 1880, and engaged on various papers, and was local writer and editor of the Republican, of Weeping Water, for a year, and he was also on the staff of the Cass County Eagle for two or three years. He subsequently went to Talmage and purchased the Tribune, of which paper he was editor and publisher until the spring of 1885. He then returned to this place, and was engaged on the Republican for a year. He was thus engaged when he received the appointment of Justice of the Peace, and resigned his connection with the paper to accept it, having been appointed to fill an unexpired term. In the fall of 1887, so satisfactory was his administration of the affairs of his office, he was elected for a full term, and qualified Jan. 1, 1888. Mr. Barr is a candid, sincere man, of unblemished character, whose intelligent, well-formed mind amply fits him for any station to which he may be called. He is influential in local politics and a standard bearer of the Republican party of Cass County. Socially, Mr. Barr belongs to the I.O.O.F., Prairie Lodge No. 25, also the Daughters of Rebecca, Woodland Lodge, at Weeping Water. - - - - - - - - - - page 1008: The Honorable Anderson Root, an ex-member of the Nebraska Legislature, and one of the solid citizens of Cass County, is a gentleman of more than ordinary capabilities, kind-hearted, public-spirited, and benevolent, possessing hosts of friends, and of that uniform and kindly temperament which carries a happy influence with him wherever he goes. He owns and occupies a fine farm on section 34, in Rock bluff Precinct, comprising 220 acres, and gives his support to all enterprises having for their object the general welfare of his community. His family comprises an amiable and intelligent wife, and a group of bright and interesting children, the latter named respectively: Charles T., who is a student at the school of telegraphy, Janesville, WI; Robert S., Eliza J., and Ralph Roy are at home. Mr. Root is a lifelong Republican politically, and he and his estimable wife are members in good standing of the United Presbyterian Church at Murray. The subject of this sketch is a great-grandson of Dr. Anson Root, an eminent physician in the State of Connecticut, where his entire life was passed. His son, Anson L. Root, grandfather of Anderson, was also a native of Connecticut, where he was reared, and where he married Miss Sally Brooks, also a native of that State. They remained in New England until after the birth of their son Charles T., father of our subject, then emigrated to Trumbull Co., OH, during the earliest settlement of the Buckeye State. There Grandfather Root battled successfully with the elements of the soil, and from the wilderness built up a good homestead, where he spent his last days. The grandmother later removed to Michigan, and spent the remainder of her life with her son Nelson, in Berrien Co., where death took place 16 Dec 1857. The father of the subject of this sketch was born in Connecticut, and went with his parents when they removed to Ohio. He staid in that state but three years, however, and then removed to Newaygo Co., MI, where he made his home until 1870, when he resolved to try his fortune in the new State of Nebraska, and came to Cass county. He has been twice married, his first wife being Miss Sarah A. Laughlin, mother of our subject, who died in 1849. Mr. Root again married, but is again a widower, and is now engaged in farming in Cheyenne Co., NE. The mother of our subject was a daughter of James Laughlin and his wife, whose maiden name was Rachel Matthews. The father of James, and maternal great-grandfather of Anderson Root was Alexander Laughlin, a native of County Down, Ireland, where he was united in marriage with Sarah Gordon, of the same county. Prior to the War of the Revolution he emigrated to America, and settled in Western Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming, and there reared a large family. Tradition has it that he served in the Patriot Army for three years in the latter part of the Revolutionary War. He died 25 Jun 1822 at the age of 59 years and is buried in the Kinsman Cem. in Trumbull Co., OH. Of the time of his wife's death we have not record. James Laughlin, son of Alexander, and grandfather of Anderson Root, was born in Beaver Co., PA, 10 Aug 1791. He became a farmer, and while yet a young man removed to Trumbull Co., OH, where he was married to Rachel Matthews, and reared a large family. A man of unbounded enterprise and energy, he hewed out of the wilderness a good home, and acquired an ample competence for his declining years. On the breaking out of the War of 1812, imbued with the patriotic impulses of his sire, he enlisted as a private in the United States Army, and served until the close of the war. Receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to the pursuits of peace, and died 10 Jul 1868, aged 76 years, 11 months, and 18 days. In politics Mr. Laughlin was originally a Whig, but on its formation joined the ranks of the Republican party, with which he ever after affiliated. He and his wife were both members of the Presbyterian Church. Rachel Matthews, wife of James Laughlin, and grandmother of Anderson Root, was also a native of Beaver Co., PA, and was a daughter of Deacon William Matthews, who was born in County Down, Ireland, and emigrated to America while a young man. With the innate love of liberty characteristic of the sturdy race from which he sprang, he entered the Continental Army, and for three years battled for the freedom of his adopted country. He fought until the close of the war, and with the return of peace and the assumed liberty of the Colonies, left the army, receiving an honorable discharge, and in the latter years of his life drew a pension. He had settled at Georgetown, near the mouth of the Little Beaver river, in Beaver Co., PA, to which he returned, and there he was married and reared a numerous family. In 1804 the patriot soldier decided to go farther West, and removed to a farm on what was then known as the "Center road" in Trumbull Co., OH, where he lived until he had attained the ripe old age of 83, dying in 1834, full of years and honor. For many years in Ohio he had been Justice of the Peace, an important office in that day and country. In regard to this venerable old pioneer we extract the following from "Historical Collections of the Mahoning Valley, OH," published in 1876: "The name of Deacon Matthews should be remembered and cherished, not only by his descendants, but by all the inhabitants of the township of Kinsman, Trumbull Co., OH, especially all those who are interested in its moral and religious improvement. In this regard his influence was greater and entered more deeply into the structure of society than that of any other of the first settlers of the town. He early established religious meetings and assemblies of worship on the Sabbath, where there were no clergymen present, as there was not except occasionally until 1813, and he always conducted the meetings. His attendance was a fixed habit, no matter what the state of the weather or roads. Whether hot or cold, wet or dry, mud or snow, he was in his place promptly at the hour of service. His venerable appearance always commanded respect, and his meek and unostentatious manner and fervency of spirit gave all who knew him confidence in the sincerity of the religion he professed." From such stock on both sides our subject drew those inspirations which have been his guide through life; of sterling worth, these hardy pioneers were well fitted to become the progenitors of a race embracing all those attributes which go to make up the best type of American manhood and womanhood. Prominent among their characteristics were deep religious convictions, and an unflinching loyalty and patriotism shown by them and their descendants in three wars--the Revolution, 1812, and the great Rebellion. Anderson Root was born Aug. 14, 1842, in Trumbull County, Ohio, where he pursued his first studies in the district school, and became familiar with farming as carried on in the pioneer days. His education was completed by an attendance of one term at Jamestown (Pa.) Seminary. On the 7th of December, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret L., daughter of Robert and Eliza J. (Thompson) Snodgrass. William Snodgrass, the paternal grandfather of Mrs. Root, was a native of Ireland, whence he emigrated to America when a small boy. He married Miss Margaret McMaster, and about 1800 located in Crawford County, Pa., when that portion of the Keystone State bore little evidence of civilization. He built the first farmhouse in his neighborhood, at a time when his nearest market was at Meadville, a distance of twenty miles away. Upon the Crawford County farm there was reared a family of five children, and there the grandparents looked their last upon the scenes of earth. Their son Robert was the eldest born, and spent all his life at the old homestead, dying there in November, 1887. His wife, the mother of Mrs. Root, still lives there and has now arrived at the age of seventy-four years. They were the parents of four daughters, Margaret L. being the second born. William and Mary (Latta) Thompson, the maternal grandparents of Mrs. Root, were natives of Ireland, and of Scotch ancestry. They came to the United States with their respected parents when mere children, and spent the remainder of their lives in Crawford Co., Pa. They trace their progenitors to the Erskines, one of the best families in Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. Root were married at the old Snodgrass homestead in Crawford Co., PA, and lived there until Sep 1865. Then deciding to cast their lot with the pioneers of Nebraska Territory, they came to this county, and were residents of Rock Bluff Precinct seven years. Next they removed to the farm of the State Agricultural Society of Lincoln, over which Mr. Root had been appointed Superintendent, and there they lived three years. Mr. Root had in the meantime purchased 320 acres of land in Rock Bluff Precinct, to which he returned. Later he sold 100 acres of this, having now 220 acres, and is largely interested in the raising of cattle and horses. The Root farm and its appurtenances indicates on all sides the thoroughness and skill with which the land has been cultivated, and the good management of the proprietor. A large portion of the land is necessarily devoted to pasture, and the barns and outhouses are furnished with all modern conveniences for the shelter and care of stock. The residence is in keeping with the taste and means of the proprietor. During the late Civil War, Mr. Root, in Aug 1861, enlisted in the 2d Ohio Cavalry, and journeyed with his comrades through Missouri, Kansas, and the Indian Territory, under command of Gen. Blunt. In 1862 he was in the Indian expedition under Gen. Weir. He met the rebels in several hand-to-hand conflicts, but escaped wounds and capture. He was, however, injured by the accidental falling of his horse upon him while at Columbus, OH, recruiting his regiment both with men and horses, and was obliged to accept an honorable discharge 11 Mar 1863. Mr. Root upon coming to this section of country was at once recognized as a valued addition to the community, and after filling many positions of trust, and otherwise indicating his ability for business and his integrity of character, was selected by the Republican party as their candidate for the State Legislature, and being elected, discharged his duties in a manner creditable to himself and satisfactory to his constituents. He has never indicated a desire for office, preferring the quiet of his farm and family. He cast his first Presidential vote for Abraham Lincoln, and has ever been a uniform supporter of Republican principles. ---------------------------- 1900 Cass Co NE Census/Soundex Rock Bluff Precinct, 5-16-6-14: Byron A. A Neighbor stumbled onto the still location and reported it to sheriff Bert Hammon, who made a telephone call instead of a raid. Henry said that he and the other dozen people on the party line all got the message. In 1954 the remaining relics of the still were donated to Morris Sawyer's museum. ############################# CHEYENNE COUNTY (978.296) CEMETERY RECORDS Cheyenne Co. Snodgrass of Silver Lake was a non-charter member. page 462: Clarence and Ella (Hougen) Durnell Clarence L. Durnell was born 1 Jan 1890 at Elwood, NE. He was the son of Courtland Clinton Durnell, who was born at Des Moines, IA, in 1859, and passed away in Aug 1934. His mother was Ada Snodgrass Durnell, born in Rosehill, IA, 27 Aug 1872. Her family moved to Kansas when she was a girl and later moved to Elwood, NE, where she met Courtland Durnell and was married there in 1889. Five children were born to them at Elwood, NE, Clarence being the oldest, Dewey of California, Ray of Lincoln, NE, Eva of California, and Lennie. The family came in 1900 in a covered wagon to Sidney. Dewey, Clarence, and their father came in the wagon, the rest of the family came by train. It took one week to make the trip with the wagon. Ada passed away 28 Dec 1946. Clarence was a barber and town constable. He was married to Ella R. Hougen, 19 Jul 1913. She was the daughter of Edwin Leopold Hougen, who was born 17 Nov 1866 at Bestaken, Norway (passed away 16 Apr 1932) and Ellen Ann Viken, also born in Norway. Ella was born at Potter, NE, in a sod house on her parents' homestead ten and a half miles northwest of the town in a precinct called Sextorp. She was born 29 Jul 1892 and passed away 12 Jan 1976 as the result of a stroke. Their daughter, Vivian, recalled that her father's nickname was "Shag." The reason being that he had a dog named Shag as a boy, and everywhere Clarence went the dog was with him, so they started calling him "Shag." Some people in Sidney never knew his real name. Even his son, Lennie, was also called "Shag." The following children were born to this union: 1. Doris married to Richard Scriber, lived in California. Richard is deceased and Doris lives at Paxton, NE. Their children are Richard, Shirley, and Michael, all of whom live in Denver, CO. 2. Lennie Lamont, who married Alice Taylor, lives in California, and has one daughter, Mary Alice. 3. Vivian, who married Harold Miller, and has lived in Sidney all their lives. See their story elsewhere in this history. Clarence worked as a policeman, on the street department for years, then on the police department again. This was a family of 9 children. Tom was eighteen years old when he came to Nemaha Co. On 24 Feb 1881 he married Emma Starr. Ten children were born to this union. They were married by Rev. Ansel Brown. Their first investment was land where the town of Odell is located today. They kept this property only a short time. Later the railroad came thru and a depot was built on the property (now in 1986 all of the railroads are being removed). They spent most of their life in Nemaha Co. except for a short time in which they lived in northwest Kansas in a dug-out home. In 1883 they bought a farm 2-1/2 miles northwest of Johnson, which is now owned by Lowell Hahn. It was on this farm that Thomas planted trees and an orchard. In 1888 he helped organize the Johnson Cemetery Association and was a trustee until his death. Others on the board were J. A. Johnson, M. I. Dasey, Alfred Aldrich, and Fred Kiechel. Thomas' sons Omer and Roy helped plant the trees that border the cemetery. They have recently been removed. At the time of his death in 1934, a resolution in his memory was put on file in the records of the cememtery association. (by Bernice Snodgrass Lockwood) - - - - - - - - - - pages 284-285: Roy and Evelyn Snodgrass I, Evelyn, was born in Brock, 4 Jul 1889. Roy Snodgrass was born south of Brock, 25 Dec 1883. We were married in 1912 and moved into a small house on his father's farm north of Brock. Roy farmed with his father. Arloe and Vardie were born there. In 1914 we moved north of Valentine, NE, on a 160 acre homestead. Roy went first, to build a two room house. In October we moved our household belongings, two cows, and two horses, by train to our new home. roy found work on a farm close by. Our house was comfortable. We had a stove in each room. There were many blizzards when we couldn't leave the house for two days. We had close neighbors, as there was someone on every 160 acres. We were on a direct road to Valentine, so the Indians and cowboys came close by. Large herds of cattle were driven to the reservation, from Texas and elsewhere, to be pastured. The Indians never bothered us. They would camp outside of Valentine, three miles south. Mona was born 27 Dec 1915, a very cold day. My mother came from Brock to help. Jerry was born 3 Sep 1917, arriving before the doctor. Roy's brother-in-law, Roy Waller, lived on the Frank Huston farm north of Brock, and when he died in Jul 1917, Mr. Huston asked us to take the farm. We gladly accepted. You couldn't live on 160 acres. You had to buy or sell; we sold. In March 1918 we moved back to Brock. Roy's grandfather, Philip Starr, had settled on this farm in 1855. Roy's mother, Emma, was born in the house built by Philip, which we were to live in. Our children, John s., Wanda J., Harold V., Daryle W., and Delmer V., were born there. On 2 Jun 1923 Harold, 18 months old, was drowned. We buried him in the Lafayette Cemetery next to great-grandparents, Philip and Marie Starr. In 1929 the depression came. Our oldere children were finishing high school. There was little money or jobs. We were luckier than some. We had farm produce to put on the table. The older boys followed the harvest north and worked out when not needed at home. The younger ones had their jobs. In 1934 we bought a farm west of Stella, NE, moving in 1935, and lived there for ten years. With the children all gone but Delmer, Roy decided a cattle farm would be easier to run. We sold the farm and bought 230 acres of grassland near Polo, MO, in 1944. Roy loved his cattle and farm and was able to tend it for twenty years. In 1964 his heart began to fail. He had to give up in 1964; his heart began to fail. He had to give up what he loved best. He entered the Lexington, MO, hospital Feb 1965. He died 27 Feb 1965. Meanwhile two sons, Vandiman and Daryle, joined us in Missouri on nearby farms. Roy and the boys shared work and machinery. When I sold the farm, they each bought a piece of the land. They raised their families and are still farming. Our children are: (1) Arloe Snodgrass; Kansas City; Darling Transfer; married Laurine Wilson. Child: Daniel. Died Dec 1960. Laurine lives in Auburn. (2) Vardie Snodgrass; Polo, MO; farmer; married Esther Taylor. Children: Dick, Robert, Patricia Smith, Dennis. (3) Mona Snodgrass; Auburn, NE; married Wayne Rose (deceased). Children: Richard (deceased); Gerald; Julie Worster; Neal; Roybert; Dale, married Charles Ely. (4) Gerald Snodgrass; Wichita, KS; metal worker; married Wilta Stark. Child: Linda Lamp. (5) John Snodgrass; Omaha, NE; National Crane Co.; married Bobbie Heath. Children: Carole McLure Restad, Kay Dragon. Second wife, Sally. (6) Wanda Snodgrass; Baytown, TX; Creative Systems; married Roy Sanderson. Children: Laddie, Gordon, Travainia. (7) Daryle Snodgrass; Polo, MO; farmer; married Mary Logan. Children: Darla, Dwayne. (8) Delmar Snodgrass; Papillion, NE; USAF, Lt. Col. (retired), married Norma Mays. Children: Levon Mattson, Debbie McChane, Terrie Large, and Steve. I had a house built in Auburn and moved here in 1967. (by Evelyn Snodgrass) Note: Evelyn lived in her home until she died 11 Sep 1984 at age 95. (Mona Snodgrass Rose Ely) - - - - - - - - - - page 287: Starr Family In Jun 1855 Phillip and Mary Ann DeLay Starr with their eight children, accompanied by four wagons containing household and farming equipment, a carriage for the wife and little ones, arrived at their new Nebraska home three miles north of the present town of Brock, where they pitched their tent on a section of land for which they paid $1.25 per acre to Uncle Sam. Besides the family, there were two other men, Barney Starr, a nephew, and Peter White, a friend, both from their neighborhood in Vermillion Co., IL. they crossed the Missouri River by ferry at Brownsville. The Starrs lived in a tent and covered wagon until they had the house and barn built. These were completed by winter. With ox teams, they hauled the rough lumber from McKissick Island and the finishing lumber from Sidney, IA. They carried chairs, tables, and the real necessities for camping when they pitched their tent at night. They always had the family worship and used the same family Bible that is used at the present Starr reunions. There being no bnaks here, this God trusting Starr family brought $15,000 to the new home, securely packed in a nail keg and anchored on the front of one of the wagons. The Starr home was the first meeting place of both church and school in this vicinity. The Methodist Church was organized in their home in 1856. Jacob Delay, brother of Mary Ann Delay Starr, came here in 1854, accompanied by his son John Delay. At the time of their arrival, the inhabitants were expecting an Indian raid. The Starrs, together with their neighbors, made preparations to defend against the raids but were spared. Phillip Starr was a rough carpenter and built all of his first buildings. He kept walnut lumber on hand and often made coffins. The coffin lumber was nicely planed and the coffins were put together with bright scres, then varnished. Phillip Starr was county surveyor. He also served as road supeervisor for 18 years. His sons, William Henry, Phillip Hewitt, and Jakie P. Starr, went on freighting trips to Denver. They freighted with ox teams, and the wagons were loaded with corn. The last trip was made in 1867. On this trip they brought back $1,000 for Mrs. Gates, who had sent her corn to be sold. This was in one $1,000 greenback. The land for the present Lafayette Cemetery, a part of the Starr farm, was given by Phillip Starr. Phillip Starr's wife excelled in weaving. She made teh material for the dresses and blankets used by the family. the wool was taken to Ottumwa, IA, for carding. She colored it and made a carpet of the yarn left in the loom. She made her own tallow candles, and when coal oil was first introduced, she placed the coal oil lamp on the mantle and remarked, "it was too bright, it dazzled the eyes." Mrs. Mary Ann Starr, her two daus., Susan Jane and Mary Catherine, and her dau.-in-law, Mrs. William Starr, made the first flag in the vicinity. It had 13 stars. Her husband, Phillip, made the staff and finished it in a cherry color. This flag was last known to be in the Starr & Campbell Hall at Brock, NE. Mary Catherine Starr was born 25 Jul 1843 in Vermillion Co., IL. She married William Clark Cathcart on 20 Aug 1868. She died 5 Apr 1904 at Brock, NE. This was compiled from an extensive narrative by Mrs. Emma Starr Snodgrass, only surviving child of Phillip and Mary Ann Starr, age 80 years, 9 Apr 1940. It has been condensed by Doreen Dailey Summers, granddau. of Mary Catherine Starr, and William Clark Cathcart, dau. of Annetta Cathcart Bailey and J. W. Nemaha County history tells me my grandparents were honest, hard-working farmers, who were interested in education for their children. The first school building was located about the middle of section 27 in the east part of Lafayette precinct and was called "Schaefers School." This school burned in 1873. The teacher's desk and the books were saved, and while plans were being made, school was held in a granary on my grandfather's farm. This school was named Rose Wood. In 1888 James E. married Minnie Setzer of Brock, whose father, V. B. Setzer, was employed by the Brock Mills and was also the Post Master there for several years. Volney Bechner Setzer was a Veteran of the Civil War and was with General Sherman on his famous "March to the Sea" where he ground the flour for the next day's rations when they would make camp at night. He also survived the Andersonville prison where hundreds of soldier died when the spring broke through and they drank themselves to death. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas farmed most of their life in the Brock Community and were the parents of seven daus., namely: Carletta, wife of O. L. Snodgrass, deceased; Etta Mae, wife of P. T. Hist.: page 40: Doris Snodgrass Soflin Bogert I was the first born of Glen and Dorothy Snodgrass, raised in Seward, and graduated from Seward High School in 1952. There were 52 in my graduating class, all full of hope of some UTOPIA waiting for us all. I then went to Lincoln and got a private secretary job, and an apartment of my own--feeling the world was mine for the asking, and I was ASKING! Little did I know that as I was moving into my apartment, I was being EYED as the "milkman on the block's" future wife. Well, that is the way it was, and I met and fell in love with William Soflin. Bill had four little daus. by a former marriage, very eager for a mother. Their names: Jacqueline (Dolly), Donna, Shirley, and Patricia. Bill and four daus. and I became a family by our marriage 4 Apr 1953. One year and 3 months later, another dau., Beverly, was born 21 Jun 1954. Oops, here comes another addition one year and 3 days later. This much desired son, Michael, born 21 Jun 1955. In 1956 we moved to Tucson, AZ, where my grandparents, Pearl and Freda Alley, resided to try new horizons. It was lovely country, and lots of fun things for a family, and Arizona, too, enlarged our family by another son, Steven, born 10 Dec 1958, and then another girl, Deanna, born 6 Nov 1961. During 1958, Bill had a stroke, which paralyzed his left side and was to battle high blood pressure the next 10 years until 24 Sep 1968, when he died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Thank the Lord above we had moved back home, where I had my parent's and family's support. Bill was a police officer when he was taken. His life-long dream had been realized. I had four daus. married, and Bev, Mike, Steve, and Deanna still young and at home to raise, and little did I know the Lord had his arms wrapped around me and was to send another man to care for me and mine. Ray Bogert was the man, and a very strong man he is. Who else would marry a woman with 8 children? Ray did, and we added to our family still further. Little Marc was born 9 Jun 1970. Marc was born with what they term as Cerebral Palsy, a brain damage of the motor nerve. He is now 11-1/2 and cannot talk, and can now walk with aid of braces and a walker. He is an exceptional "gutsy" little boy. The Lord has truly blessed us by sending our family this fantastic, extra bright, extra loving child. He is truly our family's "shining star." Our "blended" family has at this writing 6 daus., 3 sons, 5 sons-in-law, 2 daus.-in-law, 23 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. In summation, the Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. To me he has given so much. Ray and I run a very successful little cafe on the corner of Columbia and Main streets. Besides making a good living, we enjoy all the customers and friends we make and see every day. Camping in our motorhome is our only real hoppy, and we LOVE it! - - - - - - - - - - page ??: Helen Curtis Gemmer My grandparents lived in Seward County before moving to their home northeast of Friend in Saline Co. Grandfather Charles E. Snodgrass came with his parents, Zachary and Ellen Snodgrass, to nebraska from Springfield, IL, at the age of four. His younger days were spent in Seward Co. As a boy and youth he attended and worked in the United Brethren Church. He married Emma E. Carr at Red Oak, IA. Their first home was northeast of Seward. They then moved to a farm near Utica. They had three daughters, Vilent (Mrs. Milo Bowen), Gladys (Mrs. Robert Blanchard), and Velda (Mrs. Harold Curtis). Velda was my mother. Mother often told of her childhood and school days on the farm near Utica. She taught school in Seward Co. near Cordova. In 1913 the family moved to Saline Co. When I graduated from high school, I taught school in Seward Co. My first job was in the J. W. Ricenbaw district southeast of Seward. I then taught in Cordova in the primary grades and then at Goehner in the elementary grades. Many memories of the children I taught and friends I had in the county still remain in my mind. My brother, Glen, attended and graduated from Seward High School. He is married and lives in Phoenix, AZ. My sister Ileen is married lives near utica about two miles from where our grandparents lived, and mother attended school. "Lew," as he was known, was born in the first wooden frame house in that part of the county. Lewis could remember the spring-like weather the morning before the blizzard of '88 struck with such violence. When Lewis and his brother, Harry, were young men, they farmed the original homestead plus additional purchased land. There was no riding machinery then. Lewis's marriage to Nettie Snodgrass was solemnized 24 Feb 1903 in a small country church southeast of Beaver Crossing. Lewis lived his sixty years on two farms just three miles apart. Mrs. Hansen's family migrated from Illinois in a covered wagon and lived around Beaver Crossing and later in Seward. Z. T. Snodgrass served as night watchman in Seward and at one time was hired to guard a grave in Seward Cemetery, as there were "grave robbers." Rumors were that medical students had to supply their own cadavers. Nettie could relate how Indians lurked around homes near the "Blue" at Beavery Crossing. They were not harmful, just curious and would peek in windows. The Hansens were the parents of two children. Walter was killed by lightning in 1951 on the farm at age 39. Irene taught school four years, then married Joe Justice. Joe, a pharmacist, retired in 1975 after an explosion and fire consumed their drug store and a whole business block in Central City. The Justices have two sons, James (Jim) a pharmacist, owns his own drug store in Central City, and Dr. John (Jack) Justice is a dentist in Columbus. Four grandchildren complete this segment of the "Hansen" lineage thus far. Although we are transplants in Merrick County, we still have roots in Seward County, and are proud of our ancestors who helped "settle the West." I started school here, first grade and continued through high school, then taught in a one-room school in the Middle Creek area for 2 years. I received $40 a month, had 10 pupils and 5 grades to teach. My room and food at the Clarence Walker home cost me $10 per month. I rode horseback to and from school, a distance of about 3 miles south of the Garland corner on the present Highway 34. I had met Glen Snodgrass on a visit to my uncle's in Springfield, NE. Later he came to Seward and hired out picking corn for Fred and Tom Turner and others. Being a hard worker, he would pick and scoop off a 100 bushels a day by hand and received 1 cent a bushel for this. We were married in 1933, pooled our meager savings, bought a team of horses, a used plow, harrow, and planter, and farmed Bert Walker's farm for one year. Dried out, didn't even get our seed back (nobody did that year). We sold out and went to work for other farmers, among them Shelby Ramsay and "Gip" Hans. He also maintained County roads for several years. Later he went to work for Tom Wake on his farm 1 mile south of Columbia Ave. We were there 16 years. Through these years, we were blessed with four daus., Doris, Marilyn, Phylis, and Carole, and one son, Ronald. It was a struggle to support five children, but with much love, worry, and work, we managed. As each got old enough, they worked to help out all they could. Jack Johnson (of Johnson's Cafe) once said he "didn't know what he'd do when Glen Snodgrass ran out of girls!" We finally moved to town, and I worked at Seward Egg Co., becoming manager later. Glen worked for Adolph "Red" Rolsmier, assembling and delivering Allis Chalmers machinery a number of years. In 1963 we took over the Standard Truck Stop. Work, work, and many headaches, but very rewarding financially. The best part was the many dear friends we made of our customers over the years. Nothing, except our children, has given us as much joy as the friends and good experiences (a few bad) we had in those years. The lasting friendships we made we still enjoy to this day. We sold out in 1977. Our children have all married, blessing us with 21 grandchildren (10 adopted), and we now have 28 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Doris lost her first husband, Bill Soflin, in 1968 (died.) She is remarried to Ray Bogert. Marilyn to Gene French, Phyllis to Robert Smith, Carole to Stuart weber, Ronald to Carol Hain. Our blessings are many as I write this. Three daus. live in Seward, Carole in Beatrice, Ron in Sand Hills. Being close together in miles and love for each other, all holidays and celebrations are a "Big" deal for us. Togetherness prevails. Now, in 1982, Glen and I are still able to work and feel very fortunate. God bless Seward County for being so good to us. May it continue to bless the future generations in the same way it has us. A wonderful place to live--Seward. Snodgrass, a capable and progressive farmer of township 30, range 46, Sheridan county, is recognized as a citizen of worth and one of the leading agriculturists of his community. Mr. Snodgrass was born in West Virginia in 1857, and is a son of Isaac Snodgrass, of German-American stock, born and raised in West Virginia, a farmer by occupation. He died there in 1859, when our subject was two years of age, leaving a family of five children, his wife remaining on the home farm until they were grown up. Our subject was the third child in order of birth, and as soon as he was old enough he began assisting in the farm work, hoeing corn when he was a small lad, and helped his mother until he was twenty-one years of age. He determined to start out for himself and borrowed twenty dollars to start west on, as he thought that the best field for a young man of small capital. He got as far as Indiana, and was obliged to stop there while he earned more money, and in 1881 landed in Iowa. Here he worked out for a time, and then took a farm and ran it for four years, when he left there and came to Nebraska in 1888, locating in Sheridan county. Here he took a homestead and lived on it for two years, then purchased the relinquishment on the farm which he now occupies. He set to work improving this place and proved up on it. He first erected a sod house and lived in this for several years. He put on all the improvements himself, saving the cost of any hired help, and at the same time was raising crops up to 1891, when the dry years struck his locality and for several years was only able to raise sufficient to keep the family in provisions and save enough for the next year's seed. For the past eight years he has raised excellent crops, getting better each year, and he has gradually added to his place until he is now owner of six hundred and forty acres of good land, and also leases some near his own farm. On his farm there is a deep gulch which serves as a shed for his stock, of which he has about one hundred head of cattle and thirty horses. He finds stock raising to be most profitable and intends to engage in it on a larger scale from now on. He farms about one hundred and seventy-five acres and uses a large portion of the produce on his farm, marketing very little of it. He is delighted with the farming possibilities in this section of the country, and after having experience in Iowa and other states, would not trade his farm here for any he ever saw. Mr. Snodgrass was married in 1883 to Miss Lottie Worley, born in Delaware county, Iowa, in 1862. They have a family of five children, namely: Vernon L., John Earle, Richard Leroy, Dora Agnes and Dale Carleton, all born and raised in Nebraska. Mr. Snodgrass lived on his present farm during the Indian scare of 1891, and remained there through the dangerous times, although he never experienced any serious trouble from the redskins. At this time his wife was visiting relatives in Iowa, and on two occasions Mr. Snodgrass, together with several neighbors, went to Hay Springs to spend the night for fear of being surprised and injured by the savages, but the balance of the time he stayed at home. The people were in a high state of excitement, and every church in the section was a meeting place and refuge for them. Mr. Snodgrass is a Republican, and although he takes a keen interest in local and county affairs has never held office. An interesting picture of a ranch scene on Mr. Snodgrass' property will be found elsewhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1920 Soundex Gordon, 46-233-16-13: Byron R. The firm of Marshalls Nurseries, composed of George A., Chester C., and Harvey W. Marshall, nurserymen, is one of the solid institutions of Arlington, and the history of their family is interesting enough to merit special attentions in a work of this high class. They are the sons of Benjamin Clark and Catherine (Nonnamaker) Marshall, he born in Trumbull Co., OH, and she in Hancock Co., the same state. Both families were old established ones of Ohio, where Benjamin C. Marshall continued to reside until 1881, at that time he with his family coming west to Nebraska and locating 3-1/2 miles northeast of Arlington. There he bought land and lived on it until 1910, and then retired, moving at that time to Arlington, where he lived until his death, which occurred on 15 Feb 1919. After the death of his wife in 1904, he did not maintain a home of his own, but lived with his daus.. He and his wife had nine children, eight of whom are living, namely: (1) Eli W. is a stockholder of the company of Marshalls Nurseries, and is its representative at Lincoln, NE. He married Josie Dalley, their children being: Clark, May, Shirley, Eula, Tina, and Dorothy. (2) Ami, who represents Marshalls Nurseries at Bayard, NE, married Minnie Marquard, and their children are: Maude, Cora, Lula, Irma, and Chet. (3) Chester C., who is vice president of Marshalls Nurseries, married Mary Fellers, and their children are: Gail, Leeta, and Eva. (4) George A., who is president of Marshalls Nurseries, married Dora Goltry, and their children are: Vernon, Catherine, Ruth, Ralph, and Maurice. (5) Harvey W., who is treasurer of Marshalls Nurseries, married Allie Snodgrass, and they have one child, Esther, now attending National Park Seminary, Forest Glen, MD. (6) Dora is the widow of G. M. Whitford, who died in Aug 1917, leaving her two children, Murray and Bernice. The three now live at Arlington. (7) Lucy E. is the wife of William A. Whitford, a retired resident of Arlington. They have one child, Gladys. (8) Austin C., who is engaged in farming in Washington Co., married Nettie McMillan, and they have six children: Leslie, Hazel, Clayton, Julia, Howard, and Georgia. Benjamin C. Marshall was a democrat in politics. His wife was a consistent member of the Evangelical Church. Starting out in life with a very small capital, through persistent effort and strict economy, Mr. Marshall accumulated a comfortable property and died a man of means. The elder of the Marshall children were educated in Ohio. Austin was graduated from the Fremont, NE, Normal School; Harvey graduated in the commercial course at the Shenandoah, IA, College, and those younger than he received their education in the schools of Washington Co., NE. They were all reared on the farm, and in 1887 the sons started in the nursery business in a small way, grafting 40,000 apple trees and a smaller number of cherry and plum trees, and carrying a general line of small fruits, shrubbery, and ornamental trees. The firm was originally composed of C. C. Marshall, George A. Marshall, and Harvey W. Marshall. In Jun 1916 they incorporated with a paid-up capital of $60,000, all owned by the family, and of this company George A. Marshall is president, Chester C. Marshall is vice president, and Harvey W. Marshall is treasurer, while C. G. Marshall is secretary. The company ships all over the United States, but the principal trade comes from Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. The annual amount of business runs from 10,000 to 20,000 orders. In 1915 they built a modern plant at Arlington, and in 1917 they enlarged same in order to handle the increase of business. At present their main frost-proof storage building, which is one and a half to two stories high, covers a space of 140 by 160 feet. At one time they had a forty-acre apple orchard, which during the last seven years that it was productive, bore from 10,000 to 15,000 bushels annually, and they shipped a large proportion of these apples to Europe. This orchard, which was planted in 1893, is now, of course, practically extinct. The company have two diplomas received from the Paris Exposition for apples there displayed, and also a gold medal awarded them for apples in the fruit display at the Omaha Exposition. They have Government diplomas for fruit displays at both the Columbian and St. Louis expositions, and won nine sweepstakes during nine years, seven years in succession and one year between, from the Nebraska state fairs. Their plant is perfect in every respect, and the brothers own from 1,200 to 1,500 acres of land near Arlington, and this present immense business is the outgrowth of the small nursery established with $1,000 each, given the original partners by their father. Employment is given to as many as 100 persons, according to the season, including salesmen and laborers. The somewhat remarkable success attained by the Marshall family would not have been possible if the individual members had not been men of sterling character, whose efforts have always been directed along constructive lines and with a definite end in view. Reared by careful and high-minded parents, they have grown into very desirable citizens, and Arlington is fortunate in having them as residents and holders of valuable property interests here. ############################################################################ ## WAYNE COUNTY (978.257) HISTORY & GENEALOGY History of Wayne Co., NE (Nyberg--1938) [unindexed] The History of Winside, NE (Jones--194?) Dolls create a sense of history in fashhion and are an indication of the economy of the era in which they were made. They can be traced to ancient civilizations. Club projects have included making and donating teddy bears to Cedars Home for children in Lincoln and prairie dolls to seven area nursing homes. The club has had exhibits at the Plainsman Museum in Aurora, Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, and Grand Island Mall. Club members have given programs on dolls for other area organizations and attended regional and national doll conventions.
