INTRODUCTION TO THE SNODGRASS SOURCE BOOKS The state source books were created by Charlou Dolan. She began this massive project ca. 1986, organizing and typing the accumulation of Snodgrass research when she got "boxes and boxes" of files from Scott F. Hosier (he was Editor of The MACE 1978-1986). Those files formed the nucleus of the "source books". During her tenure as Editor of The MACE, 1987-1993 and since, Charlou has been hard at it: gathering and entering into the source books Snodgrass data, making trips to courthouses and libraries across the country, collecting files & family data from past & present members of The Snodgrass Clan Society, as well as soliciting information from many other Snodgrass researchers. The source books are one of the best tools available to anyone researching Snodgrass. One for nearly every state, each is organized by county and within each county, info is arranged by date. These source books contain a wealth of Snodgrass research. Census readings - wills - deeds - misc. court records - marriages - deaths - obits - histories - Bible records - even queries found in genealogical publications ... all Snodgrass! Charlou's comments on the collected data are shown as < . > throughout. Any comments marked [ . ] or [vss -] were added by me, Violet "Suzie" Snodgrass Schoolcraft beginning in 1997, the result of my reading the source books and tracing families since I first joined The Snodgrass Clan Society in 1993. PLEASE keep in mind that the source books are meant to be a reference work - they give us an idea of what has already been found. Perhaps more importantly, they show us where to look next for what is yet to be done! REMEMBER, extractions & transcriptions, notes & comments may have errors or may be missing certain portions of the original material. ALWAYS refer to the original source material whenever possible, using the source books as a starting point to guide you in your individual research. If it is SNODGRASS we at The Snodgrass Clan Society continue to collect it! Please send items (with sources cited!) you want to share with others to: Paul D. Banks, who says that "Original cards are kept at the National Archives branch near Atlanta, Georgia. Some men do not have birth locations listed because they registered on the final draft registration day in 1918 when this information was not recorded. During the last two years of World War I, almost 24 million Americans were required to register for the military draft. I must emphasize civilian registration because only a small minority of these men was ever inducted into the military. A higher percentage of this American male population was reached by this process than by the 1920 census. In addition, the information provided was much more complete and reliable than the census information because the registrant was the person providing the information. Because many states did not have birth registration during the years these men were born, the cards serve the function of substitute birth records. - Ray H. Belinda d/o William Snodgrass & Charity; 1827 Margaret Price m. John Snodgrass] My dear wife, Margaret, Yours of 20 July reached us on 2 Aug & yesterday yours of 26 from B L Sprins came to hand. We were in hopes from yours of 20 that by the time you write again you would be able to advise of a change in your health for the better, but now think you are not improving fast as we could ask. Do try to enjoy the situations you are in more than you do & be cheerful. We are disappointed in your not saying more about your trip up & also about the families with whom you are staying. I wrote you on 25 July. Also Mr. Moss 1 August. When I write M suppose he will give you any news it may contain. Why does Henry not write. I am asked so often about your health by your friends that you must give me something definite to answer them. also, some of Aunts old friends ask whether she is coming down this fall & c. (give us information) Philips family staid with us from July 8 to 1st August were all well when they left. We have an addition to our family unexpectedly. E. Dart came back on 4. Says her cousin Joseph came as far as Rodney & kept into Cincin She tells her G Ma that she only went on a visit and that owing to sickness the school was dismissed & her G Ma thinks that they have got tired of her. I wish she could have been employed until you get back elsewhere. You need not be uneasy about us. We are all well U have been well in exception of 6 or 8 days I had slight fever brought on by great heat of weather. We have had the hotest kind of weather in July. It is now a little cooler. You speak of the first or second week in Sept as about time you will likely start back. This will be too soon. You ought not to come until Oct. You ought to visit Danville. You have letters [of recommendation]. Also will find Mary Chamberlain there & Mr. Alleson & Mary will be there on their way back (Mr. Bolls says). Mr. B. requests that you find out Mr. & Mrs. Peak at or near Georgetown his Arkansas neighbors and visit them. Promises you a warm welcome on his a/c. Mrs. Black is yet low and it is doubtful as to her ultimate recovery doubtful. This is examination week [at the college] but few strangers on the ground. Pillsworth is on a visit home & has been for a week part. He & John went yesterday evening to Flinns. All our family connections are in health as far as we know. On the __ have had during July a number of cases and are now healthier. Have lost none. Last Saturday & Sunday was meeting. A fellowship 7 whites 2 Blacks Baptised - Wm. Coleman & his wife Mrs. Emanuel & Joseph Robb were amongst the number. The interest in the meeting still continues I hope (?) attended the association at Georgetown you spoke of in yours of 20 July. It would give you some idea of a Kentucky meeting. On 6 Jul & 25 I wrote you & on 18 & 1 Aug wrote Mr. Moss. Always expect Mr. M [Henry Moss] to give you all information of family [continued on a second sheet] matters that may be in his. Mrs. Black whom I have just left desires her love sent to you. I was telling her where you were & that you had been a little sick & c. She thinks before she can leave her bed the weather will be too cool in Kentucky for her to go up. I much fear she never will be able to go. Mrs. S. W. Richardson sends compliments & love; the D R says you must not come until Oct. Dr. Chamberlain says Mary will be at Mrs. Boles or M. Younce in Danville when you come home best bring about 20 hams if convenient you get them at Louis or perhaps in Country & have them _____ up. Bring some good apples & c. Will you have some cherries rady pressed. Grandma has had some Peaches made for you. The Garden & yard are as you left them only garden is vy grassy. We have Lucy & Hannah at it as often as practicable. As soon as we get our fodder saved will commence on Brick hauling to underpin hose [house]. Our crop on place has pushed us to save it but now are pretty well on. Will begin to pick tomorrow. Mr. Moss has credit to draw for 200 dolls [dollars] if you need on B W & Co. N. O. Stanley is very lively & healthy. no trouble neither is Edward. [vss - Stanley abt 2 yr old, Edward abt 6] I keep S with me nearly every night & I have not been absent any night since you left. I am sorry you have as yet met with none of your acquaintances. You can form some no doubt. Have you made not use of any your letters. Yet the letters might be of service if you would show them to any friends of those to whom they are addressed. It is not necessary that a letter of introduction be kept for the one to whom addressed. The one to Dr. Richardson would be of service to you at B L or any where. You must go to Danville & make some acquaintances before you come home. Mr. M said something about a little place near him for sale with what he thought you were or would be pleased. Hope you can locate (?) it &c. Cannot Henry [vss - Henry C. b. 1832] be made to write to John [vss - John W. b. 1829]. Grand Ms _____ were counting up the time last Sunday & find 1/3 has passed off that we allowed you to be absent. So you can see we are thinking of your return but we wish to get you perfectly recovered. Costs what it will in time and money. Mr. Mount staid with us two nights expresses a great anxiety (?) for your restorations to complete health. Saml. Montg (omery?) & wife are in Louisville under Dr. McDowell. Also Mr. Mont informs us S. V. Marshall. We all send our warmest & most affectionate regards to you & all our Kentucky friends & accept for yourself a double portion of sincere love from your ever affectionate but unworthy Husband. John Snodgrass Grandmother reminds me to send her love to all her friends. Edward is getting ready to go out with me to the speaking at 10 Oc. I do wish you would fill up your letters with an a/c of your travels & your feelings as to whether you are about to recover your health. Give us an a/c of Moss & Janes Families & any thing you judge interesting. You will be much pleased at Harrodsburg Springs and find some from Miss. We will write you every week or Mr. Moss. ------------------- [vss - seems appropriate to put this note here .... MS, published after 1981] (need date) -- (need title): page 568: McMASTER FAMILY Samuel McMaster (1842-1934) settled in Tate County near Senatobia after the Civil War, about 1869. He was the 3rd child of Daniel McMaster and Barsheba Snodgrass McMaster. Daniel was born in North Carolina, but moved to Lawrence, TN, and was still there in 1840. We are not sure when he left Tennessee to live in Phelps Co., MO, where he lived until his death in July 1899. Samuel had five brothers -- John Robert (1839-1911), William Harrison (1840-1922), Jonathan (1845-?), Joseph (1849-?), and Henry (1855-1872). There were four sisters: Margaret (1847-1937), Mary (1859-1875), Nancy (1861-?) and Charity (1866-1964). Samuel McMaster was married twice; 1st to Jemima Nipper and 2nd to Lizzie McElray. He was the father of Robert Edward, Donna E. (1872-1917), a third child in 1874 but the record is unclear, a fourth child (unclear record), and Birdie (1881-1962). Robert Edward (1869-1935) was the eldest son of Samuel and through him the McMaster name remained alive in Tate County. Robert Edward McMaster was married 18 Dec 1889 to Josephine Mary Woolfolk (Truslow Community). This marriage resulted in eleven children: Nannie, b.29 Sep 1890, d. in childhood; William Edward, b. 8 Oct 1892, d. 1971, who married Effie Rodman; Roy, b. 4 Apr 1894, d. 1920, who married Edna Hale; Ilene, b. 27 Jun 1895, d. 1966, who married George Bennett; Ida, b. 20 mar 1897, who married Johnnie Woolfolk; Lizzie, b. 21 Mar 1899, d. 1918, who married Lester Davis; Hubert, b. 11 Nov 1900, d. 16 Aug 1977, who married Lucille Frances Brewer; Fannie Ruth, b. 23 Jul 1902, d. in infancy; Louise, b. 28 Nov 1903, who married Louis Evans and after his death she married O. A. Jeter; Lucille, b. 8 Aug 1904, d. 22 Nov 1981, who married Webber W. Mitchell; and Carl, b. 11 May 1907, d. 7 Nov 1974, who married Alma Busby. Josephine Mary Woolfolk, the wife of Robert (Bob) McMaster was the daughter of David Spencer Woolfolk. The compiler of this material could not be sure of her mother's maiden name. According to the information I have, she had one sister, Fannie, and four brothers: Tom Woolfolk, Richard (Dick) Woolfolk, Jack Woolfolk, and Austin Woolfolk. Fannie and Jack are buried at Bethel Cemetery, Tom at Senatobia, Richard (Dick) at Arkabutla, and Austin (never married) at Truslow. The compiler remembers Dick Woolfolk very well. He lived at Arkabutla and was a dealer of horses and mules. Many times he spent the night at our home in the Singleton Springs Community. He would be riding his favorite horse and may be leading as many as ten other horses and mules. He went from farm to farm buying, selling or trading these draft horses and mules. Many times he would leave some of his livestock with us to keep until he returned. My father, Hubert McMaster, loved to "break" or train animals to pull the wagons, buggies, and horse drawn farm implements. We often would do this for Uncle Dick, and he in return would let us use animals for a period of time to pay for our troubles. Robert (Bob) Edward McMaster, although born in Missouri, moved with his father to Senatobia at the early age of one or two years old. He grew up on a farm and remained a farmer all of his life. For many years prior to his death he was a farm manager for the Roseborough family. Of course at that time all farming was by hand and with mules and horses. Much of the land was farmed by "sharecroppers." This meant the land owner furnished all supplies, animals, implements, and place to live for one half of what the crop brought. The sharecropper received one half for providing the labor. I always liked to hear my father, Hubert McMaster, tell about his trips to the mule markets at Memphis, TN. They would board the train at Senatobia with their saddles and go to Memphis, buy from 10-20 horses and mules, and ride them back to Senatobia. The McMaster family lived near Senatobia, and most of Bob McMaster's children went to the "Old Woolfolk" school, and the later children to Senatobia school. Most of the early family were church going Baptist, very friendly people, extremely hard workers that stayed close together as a family. As a child I can vaguely remember going to Pappa Mc's (Bob's) house just south of Senatobia Cemetery, and there would be a huge crowd. After all with as many as seven children, their wives and children all there at one time, it was quite an experience. At night the floors were covered with what we called pallets, and at times it was quite lengthy getting food to eat. In those days the children had to wait until last to eat. The cooking was done with wood and later coal burning cook stoves. There was always plenty of home cured bacon, ham and sausage, milk, eggs, butter, corn meal, dried peas, dried beans, dried apples and very often a beef would be butchered along with turkey and chickens. Items that had to be purchased were mostly flour, sugar, coffee, and tea. On special occasions during the summer months Ice would be purchased from the local ice plant (they also sold cheese) and we would enjoy homemade ice cream. There always seemed to be an unlimited amount of sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, and hominy. This family seemed to have several characteristics: Happy, smile a lot, talk loud, large ears, very friendly, hard workers, yes, big eaters, very strong and durable (several lived past 80 years), loved animals, very productive, and most of them that I knew were Christians. Facts on genealogy were collected by my oldest brother, James McMaster, deceased 17 Nov 1981.
