"DAVID S. SNODGRASS was born in the town of Sparta, near Nashville, Tennessee, May 9, 1858.
When about three years old he was left an orphan, his mother dying a few months previous to the breaking out of the Rebellion, and his father being killed in the war. A family of five children was thus left to care for themselves. Our subject managed to secure a good education. Very early in life he developed a taste for study, and availed himself of every advantage afforded him in his native town. He attended Barrett College and Cumberland Institute, after which he engaged in teaching. In 1881 Mr. Snodgrass came to California and entered the Normal School at San Jose for further study, graduating there in 1883. He then moved to Modesto, where he filled the position of vice-principal of the high school for half a year. He was called from Modesto to take charge of the school in Fresno; and for three years was principal of the schools of that thriving city. He resigned his position there and moved to Selma in order to give his attention to banking. He helped to establish the Bank of Selma and at once assumed the position of cashier. At present he is cashier and secretary and one of the bank's original stock-holders. Since he took up his residence here he has been identified with the best interests of the town, being one of the most prominent men in business circles. He is president of the board of directors of Selma Water Company, and also president of the Masonic Temple Association, the object of the latter being to improve town property. Another organization with which he is connected and of which he is president is the Fire Commission, composed of three commissioners. He is also engaged in farming, especially vine and fruit growing, and is the owner of some handsome vineyard property. Mr. Snodgrass is courteous and unassuming in his manner, and from the advancement he has made since coming to California, and from the prominent and influential position he occupies, it is unnecessary to state that he is an exceedingly popular man. He was married, June 12, 1890, to Miss Emma L. Cottrell, a native of Ohio."

SNODGRASS FUNERAL TO BE HELD AT 2 P.M. TODAY The funeral of Joel Snodgrass, 75, a native of Pennsylvania, will be held at 2 p.m. today, from the chapel of Lisle and Ross, with interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Mr. Snodgrass died yesterday in a local sanitarium after a long illness. He was born near Claysville Pennsylvania February 1, 1849 and was the son of Samuel and Matilda Snodgrass. May 9, 1878 he married Nancy E. Winter. Mrs Snodgrass died December 22, 1916 in Dodge City, Kansas. Two brothers and one sister survive. They are Robert G. and Samuel H. Snodgrass of Claysville Pennsylvania, and Mrs C. C. Stull of Fresno.

SPECIAL St. PATRICK'S DAY WEDDING BECKONS, by Virginia Kay. It had to be a very special wedding that lured me, on March 16, from all the St. Patrick's celebrations in Pasadena down to the Riviera Country Club at Pacific Palisades. And special it was. In the first place, Jamie Carr, the bride, is granddau. of Addie Carr, my friend of goodness-knows-how-many years, and for even more years a resident of Altadena. Secondly, the mother of the bride lived her early life in Pasadena, where she was known as Patti Wilson. Patti's very youthful marriage to Addie Carr's son, Jim, ended in divorce, but not an end to family bonds, because of the children. Patti went on to become the popular weather girl of Palm Springs television, and in time to become the wife of Tom Bosley, of "Happy Days." Jimmy Carr was one of the key figures in the creation of Salton Sea and Lake Havasu. So here we were at one of the weddings we hear about, where there should be enormous complexities and tensions. Instead it was a beautiful symphony of love, laughter and harmony. The wedding itself had the enchantment of a little bride who might have stepped out of a fairy tale and a handsome young groom, Tony Congdon. There was more, however, than the usual charm we expect of a wedding. There was no conflict between two families, the type of dissension that can tear a young couple apart emotionally. No hard decisions were necessary for little Jamie. Jimmy Carr, her natural father, proudly walked her down the aisle, then at the altar turned her over to her stepfather, Tom Bosley, who handed her to Tony. It was a moving, and a very wise, solution, and might be a role model for thousands who face such situations.

Dear Joe,
Your's of the 6th was received yesterday, and also the box came to hand in the evening, everything in the box was safe enough excepting that one of the bottles was broke and gave a kind of flavor to the contents of the box that was not so bad afterall. The box came just in time as we got orders at the same time to instected next morning, (that is this morning) and everything that was wanted to make requisitions for and draw them the orders was for to get everything ready for to take the field and this afternoon I hear that we have got the final orders for to march and I suppose that we will leave as soon as we get transportation. I believe we are to report to Genl. Hooker. Our quarter master was down at the river this morning to get transportation and they told him that they could not give him it, they thought, before next week, and it might be that the orders will be countermanded before that. However Co. D. is ready for it at a minute's notice. I think we will start with about fifty men fit for duty, the balance will be left here in the Hospitals. For my part, I think I can stand it. I weigh 158 Lv. and I think I can thrash a Rebel of this same weight if I get any kind of a show. The boys are all satisfied about leaving but would just as soon have stayed here until the bad weather was over. I believe they are all eager to meet the foe. The reserves are at Alexandria and I believe will take our place. I left the chickens and one roll of butter with Mrs. Robb. The balance we will try and take care of and from the way the boys pitches into the chicken, and pie, I am sure we will. Our orderly, Sargeant Snodgrass, left for home this afternoon on a furlough of 30 days. There is something the matter with his livers. He may call to see you and if he does treat him well. Hen Callohan was home on one and found out about me being at home. He said Bill Roach told him, and that father told him about me being there, and that I eat all before me. It don't make any difference except that Callohan has a very large mouth and may blow it. I send you in this letter a photograph of our mess. We got two apiece. One of mine I gave to Mrs. Robb, the other one I send to you for mother. I don't think I will have time to get one taken of myself as the rooms are crowded all the time. If I don't have time I will have it taken singly and send it on. This is all I can think of at present and as the boys are coming into the parlor I will have to close this. About 1944 Richard and Ellen Milholland purchased a 118 acre ranch in Sage from Robert Snodgrass.

page ??: Fannie and Charles Rich came to Hemet in 1907 and established their home, which Charles built, on Kirby near Esplanade. The house still stands under the largest eucalyptus tree in the Hemet Valley. Fannie's mother came to the area at the same time, filed on a homestead in the Sage are and raised Fannie's two sons by a previous marriage, Robert and Herbert Snodgrass. Herbert Snodgrass also homesteaded in the Sage area when he became of age. [vss - Fannie Snodgrass & son Robert - 1900 Los Angeles Co.] Fannie and Charles had seven children, before his untimely death in 1927, when the youngest child was two. Fannie kept the family together, fed them, clothed them, and educated them. Edward, Albert, and Nellie are deceased. Harold is a widower and lives in Burbank, CA. William lives in Riverside, CA, with his wife, Dorothy Owens Rich, also a former Hemet resident. George is living in Sage with his wife, Ruth Ann Goodrich Rich. Richard is living in Valle Vista (East Hemet) with his wife, Marie. Their two children, Carol and Richard, Jr., also live in Hemet. Fannie lived to see her children grow to adulthood. Four of her sons, Edward, Albert, George, and Richard were in WWII. Albert lost his life in WWII military service. She also had a grandson, Donald Rich, in the Korean War, and two grandsons, Samuel Rich and Richard Rich Jr., in military service in the Vietnam War.

11 Jul 1963 -- San Francisco Examiner (Thursday): D. E. Snodgrass of Hastings Dean David E. Snodgrass, founder of the famed "65 Club" at the University of California's Hastings College of the Law, and an outspoken opponent of compulsory retirement based on chronological age alone, died here yesterday. He succumbed at Presbyterian Medical Center after undergoing heart surgery. He entered the hospital Monday, buoyantly noting that the chances of survival were 70 to 30 in his favor. Dean Snodgrass was 68 and a native of Selma, Fresno County, the son of a local banker. THE "65 CLUB" He had been Dean at Hastings since 1940 and a faculty member there since 1928. His internationally known "65 Club," composed almost exclusively of eminent professors uprooted by compulsory retirement rules at the Nation's top law schools, was born of necessity during World War II. Dean Snodgrass found his faculty being depleted as more and more younger professors were called up for military service. He started building a faculty of retired oldsters, which has since been rated by Roscoe Pound, renowned Dean Emeritus of Harvard Law School, as probably the strongest law faculty ever assembled. HIS TRADEMARK Dean Snodgrass' omnipresent eyeshade, his trademark to several generations of Hastings students, was a touch he borrowed from dean Pound, his old mentor. He received his academic degree at Harvard in 1917 and his law degree there in 1921, after Navy service as an Ensign in World War I. He joined the Hastings faculty while sales attorney for the Associated Oil Co. and devoted his full time to the College since 1936. The mercurial Dean was a colorful and controversial figure. He drew fire from some lawyer colleagues, for instance, for insisting through the years that California had a shortage--not a surplus--of lawyers. MANY AFFILIATIONS And he derided arbitrary compulsory retirement rules in lectures throughout the country. Dean Snodgrass was a member of the Bohemian Club, past commander and permanent adjutant of Blackstone Post of the American Legion, a member of the Harvard Club of San Francisco, the American Bar Association, the San Francisco Bar Association, the Lawyers Club of San Francisco, the American Law Institute, the American Judicature Society, the Commonwealth and University clubs and the Masonic fraternity. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ellen Machenhauer Snodgrass, whom he married in Germany in 1923; and a dau., Mary Ellen. The family home is at 54 Mountain Spring Ave., San Francisco. 12 Jul 1963 -- San Francisco Examiner (Friday): TRIBUTE PAID SNODGRASS BY JUDGES AND LAWYERS Eloquent tributes to Dean David E. Snodgrass were conveyed to his grieving family and his colleagues at the University of California's Hastings College of the Law from lawyers and judges throught the State yesterday. Comments by Justice Marshall F. McComb of the California Supreme Court, a personal friend, were typical: OUTSTANDING "Dean Snodgrass was a great American citizen, an outstanding legal scholar, a fearless advocate who never hesitated to state his position on any issue--no matter how controversial. He made a tremendous contribution to legal education in the United States and to student life at Hastings." The Federal District Court here was adjourned yesterday at the close of business sessions to honor his memory. The adjournment was ordered by Chief District Judge George B. Harris, who declared: FORMIDABLE LEADER "We have lost a formidable leader and a man of great integrity and intellectual attainments." Dean Snodgrass was described as a "great administrator and teacher" by another Federal judge, Alfonso J. Zirpoli, who formerly taught at Hastings. Dean Snodgrass, 68, and a native of Selma, Fresno County, died Wednesday after undergoing heart surgery at Presbyterian Medical Center. He had been dean at Hastings, the oldest law school in the West, since 1940. There he attracted worldwide attention throught the "65 Club," a unique faculty organization composed of eminent legal scholars uprooted from other law schools by compulsory retirement rules. Hastinigs is now the eighth largest accredited law school in the country. And under a rigid policy adopted by Dean Snodgrass several years ago, no professor under 65 is eligible for a full-time teaching post. Dean Snodgrass is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ellen Snodgrass of 54 Mountain Spring Ave., and a dau., Miss Mary Ellen Snodgrass. Funeral services will be strictly private. In accordance with her husband's wishes, Mrs. Snodgrass requested yesterday that any memorial tributes be made in the form of contributions to a scholarship fund at Hastings.

6 Apr 1974 -- New York Times: Fred Snodgrass, 86, Dead; Ball Play Muffed 1912 Fly. Ventura, California, 5 Apr 1974. Fred Carlisle Snodgrass, who muffed an easy fly that helped to cost the new York Giants the 1912 World Series, died today at the age of 86. Mr. Snodgrass played nine years in major league baseball with the Giants and the Boston Braves before moving to California, where he became mayor of Oxnard, a banker, and rancher. He described himself once as a "quick tempered 20-year old kid," when he joined the Giants in 1908 for $150 a month. Mr. Snodgrass made a two-base muff of pinch-hitter Clyde Engle's easy pop fly to set up the tying run. One man walked and another man singled, driving Mr. Engle to tie the game, and putting the winning run on third. A long outfield fly scored the winning run. He is survived by his widow, Josephine, two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor LeFever and Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett, and five grandchildren.
