In 1874 in Roane county he married Amanda Starcher, daughter of Josiah Payne Starcher and Nancy Jane (Nicholas) Starcher. Josiah's parents were Daniel Sr., and Nancy Brannon Starcher. Nancy Jane was daughter of Solomon and Dorothy Wayne Nicholas. Their grandparents were pioneer settlers of Calhoun county, being William Brannon, Sr., and Mary (Paine-Payne), who came to Calhoun county from the District of Columbia on the South Branch of the Potomac river; also Tunis and Catherine (Proppst) Mayne-McElvain. William Ellison was a teacher at the Mill Run school on Beech. He was born in Augusta county, VA, in 1808. He was a captain in the Civil War and at one time owned all the land from the present day Thomas P. Jarvis farm, now owned by Irene Gunn, to the old Booth farm below the mouth of Two Lick, to the old Badgett farm at the foot of the hill on Two Lick. In 1900 he and his son Frank moved to St. Louis, MO, where they bought a ranch and a hotel. William died in Missouri and is buried there. He settled in Westmoreland Co., VA, and served in Indian Wars in Virginia. He is said to be the ancestor of the Marshalls in Virginia and Kentucky. John Lockridge in 1705 settled in Milton, Mass. and later moved to the Calf Pasture River area (then Highland Co., VA, later Bath Co., VA). The earliest descendants of our line of the Virginia Marshalls of which we have records go back to John W. Marshall born 12 Aug 1772, married Elizabeth Caldwell 12 Jun 1799. These are recorded in family Bible in possession of Lacy See Marshall, Williamsville, Bath Co., formerly Augusta Co., VA. The following children were born to John and Elizabeth Caldwell Marshall: 1. George Marshall, 20 Mar 1800, did not marry; 2. John C. Marshall, 12 Dec 1801, m. Isabella Kincaid; 3. James W. Marshall, 29 Mar 1804, m. Obediance Ann Campbell; 4. Thomas Marshall, 27 May 1806, m. Margaret J. Benson; 5. Catharine B. Marshall, 27 Sep 1808, did not marry; 6. Samuel M. Marshall, 2 Jan 1811, m. Nancy G. Kincaid; 7. David Davis Marshall, 12 Sep 1814, m. Elizabeth Jane Lockridge. David Davis Marshall (12 Sep 1814-8 May 1865) and Elizabeth Jane Lockridge Marshall Sturm were the parents of the Marshall family who came to West Virginia after the close of the Civil War. David Marshall enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 49. He died of typhoid fever near the end of the war. His widow, Elizabeth Jane Lockridge Marshall, brought their family over the mountains to the Gilmer-Calhoun area as she and her husband had planned (Calhoun then being a part of Gilmer County). They settled in what is now Calhoun County on a ridge overlooking the Little Kanawha River and the village of Russett in Sherman District. The children of David and Elizabeth Jane were: 1. Margaret E. Blaine, 26 Feb 1842, m. Samuel Jackson 19 Sep 1867; 2. Catherine S. Rebecca, 2 Mar 1844, m. Quinby Hosey 12 Jun 1873; 3. William Thomas Lockridge, 1 Apr 1846, m. Theodotia Barr 21 Apr 1881; 4. Mary Ellen Caldwell, 8 Feb 1848; 5. John Lanty Morrison, 25 Nov 1850; 6. George Cyrus Moore, 22 Jan 1853, d. 17 Jan 1854; 7. Sarah A. Blanch, 10 Oct 1855, m. Minnie Myrtle born 20 Jul 1888, never married; 2. Edith Jane born 9 Sep 1890, married Levi J. Morris; 3. Lawrence Ernest born 3 Mar 1893, married Edith Knight; 4. Carl Absolom born 1 Sep 1895, married Kathryn Conley; 5. Richard Harley 23 Dec 1898, married Ota May Ferrell; 5. Hattie Lenore 12 Apr 1901, married Mont Smith; 7. Robert Gerold 26 Oct 1904 died in infancy; 8. Thurl James 20 Jan 1908, died in infancy; 9. Gladys Virginia 9 Mar 1910, married Kester McCartney. In the 124 years since the widow Elizabeth Jane Lockridge Marshall brought her young family over the mountains to Calhoun Co., WV, her family has grown, and her descendants have contributed much to this area and beyond. She was a true pioneer and of such ancestors all of her descendants can be justly proud. She lies in rest in the Old Bethlehem Cemetery near Grantsville, WV. The name on her monument is Elizabeth Jane Sturm from her second marriage to Peter Sturm. May she rest in peace. (Submitted by Donald W. Susan appears on the 1900 census in the John Callison household listed as servant. On the 1910 census she is head of her own household, occupation laundress, with two children: Halley, age eight, and Denver, age one year six months. Birth records in Clay County list a third child, Roy, born 1913. On 25 Jul 1914 she married Stanley Dobeck; birth records show the birth of Homer, 1916, and Chester, 1920. Court records of 8 Nov 1926 commit Stanley to the asylum at Spencer. Stanley Dobeck recovered from his illness and stayed on at Spencer as gardener till his death in 1956. Came to Western Virginia when she was very young. Little is known of her family except that she had relatives in the Western Virginia area. Prior to her marriage to Thomas Jefferson Laxon, she was married to "Ike" Brown, and had a son, George W. Brown (b. Jun 1882). She had a half-brother, Mathias Gibbs, who lived in Appalachia, VA, in the early 1900s. She and her mother, Rachel Kelly Stoner, lived at Pritcher Creek, near Norton, VA, before she met Thomas Jefferson Laxton. She had a sister, Ellie Stoner, whose first husband was John Clark, and who later married Corley Jones. Ellie lived at Hartland, Clay Co. Rachel Stoner Laxton and Thomas Jefferson Laxton had eight children. They lived in Clay Co. for several years. The 1890 Census of Clay Co. shows them living at Otter, and the 1900 Census of Clay Co. shows them living at Clay (Two Run). According to family lore, Rachel Stoner Laxton worked as a hired girl in the lower end of Clay. She developed neuralgia. Her optic nerves were affected, and around 1900 she started losing her eyesight. Around 1905, Rachel Stoner Laxton and Thomas Jefferson Laxton separated. According to Rachel's oldest daughter, Viola, Thomas J. Laxton had gone to Wyoming Co., WV, to visit his sister. He usually did this every year, and would stay about a month. This time, while he was gone, Rachel's son, George W. Brown, told her now was her chance to leave the old man, and he talked her into taking the children and going to Virginia. She and her son, George W. Brown, operated a boarding house near Sutherland, VA, and her daughters helped with the cooking. It was there that Victoria Viola Laxton married Wayne Snodgrass. Around this time, Thomas Jefferson Laxton visited the family in Virginia. He stayed a few days and then left, saying he was going to his son Thomas's house in Wyoming Co. That was the last known contact Rachel Stoner Laxton or her family had of Thomas Jefferson Laxton. When Rachel's son, George W. Brown, decided to get married, Rachel moved her family to a log cabin outside Sutherland, VA. Her son George talked her into leaving her daughter Ellie May with him and his wife. In the time to follow, Rachel and her remaining three children (McKinley, Dona, and Emma) lived in various locations around the Norton, VA, area. Around 1908-1909 Rachel and her three children returned to Clay, WV, and stayed with William N. (Willy) Laxton for a short while. She left McKinley in Clay with his half-brother, William N. (Willy) Laxton. She and the other two children went to Philippi, WV, for a while and then back to Norton. Rachel's daughter, Emma Laxton, recalls that when she was about 7 years old (around 1910), she accompanied her mother to see a Doctor Beavers in Norton, VA. The doctor told her mother that if she had come to him sooner, he could have saved the sight in one of her eyes; at that time, it was too late. At 45 years old, Rachel was completely blind, and she spent her remaining years in total darkness. She moved around, staying at relatives homes and in later years she returned to Clay County, where she stayed with McKinley Laxton in Dundon, and then moved up to Laxton Hollow (above Two Run) until her death, 5 Jan 1940. She is buried in Dundon Cemetery.
