[S1935] Carter family records supplied by Johnna L. Friesth <e-mail address> wrote 5/2000, "Ella Carter (Lowder) was born to Mary Carter and ? on 20 January 1824. Mary Carter married Hudson Middleton November 1835, and so far as I know, had no more children. When my sister and I and our daughters were in Indiana several years ago, we seemed to be hitting a stone wall where Ella's parents were concerned. We looked in a number of sources and we talked at length with Carolyn Carter Kellum, who had done extensive research on the Carter line. She had recently received a 'Carter Book' compiled by Chuck Liddell. Ella was certainly listed as Mary's sister. As we continued to dig, we began to wonder whether it was possible that Ella was Mary's daughter. Newspaper clippings of family events and the listing of guests and their relationships really seemed to bear out our suspicion. C. Kellum had a family Bible with names, dates listed. Ella was not specifically listed as Mary's child, but was listed at the bottom of the page (below even the youngest two sons of Samuel II and Edith and separated by a space). Of course, we then assumed that indicated that Ella was indeed of this family, but not in the same way that the other children listed were. I have since corresponded with other Carter connections, and they have also arrived at the premise that Mary was Ella's mother. The family was traveling to Indiana from North Carolina at about this time, and as I get it, Mary stayed in NC and did not travel with the family, but went to Indiana after Ella's birth. A brother apparently stayed to travel with her. Of course we are curious - to say the least - who Ella's father was, and why he and Mary didn't marry. We have speculated that because of the subsequent use of the Stanley name that that may be a possibility. Maybe one who was already married."
