[S2143] Andrew Christy Funeral, Republican Progress, Bloomington, IN (24 Apr 1889), Newspaper Archives, Indiana University Library, per card file at Monroe County Genealogical Society Library, Bloomington, IN. Copy of card to compiler by correspondence, Apr 1994. "Christy, Andrew. Buried on the hill west of town about 1816. The first funeral ever held in Bloomington. Gilbert Neill, a resident of Whitehall, age 77 in 1889, recalled attending the funeral. At that time, there were only about 4 or 5 families living in Bloomington." This compiler visited the only cemetery in Bloomington that is located west of town. It is Rosehill Cemetery and is indeed up on a hill, but there were substantially more than 5 families in living there at that time and Andrew Christy was not the first person buried there. There are several stones with earlier dates. I visited the cemetery office and was told that the earliest records were in the basement of the building but had been destroyed by mice.

[S2271] Photograph of the cemetery stone of Andrew Christy at the Burch Cemetery, Monroe Co, IN, supplied 6/2001 by Karen Meeker <e-mail address> The photo shows that he is buried right next to his grandson Andrew Christy, son of John and Abigail Christy. Karen writes, "June 1822 Andrew Christy 77 years." 7/2001 Karen writes that Raymond Christy visited Burch cemetery and the stone is blank. Karens states, "He called me to see if my sister-in-law would create Andrew's stone for her own purposes. She is not that kind of person but I asked her how they came to go to that cemetery in first place. As it was 1990 she remembers it was off the beaten path and got lost going there and the reason they went was - they had stopped at Bloomfield library and looked at Christy listings." We do know that Andrew died before Jun 1822, because the man who made the burial clothing was paid May 19th. Since the will was written on the 28th of April, he had to have died between 4-28 and 5-19 of 1822.
