Sanford Stonebraker (M) b. 30 April 1840, d. 4 July 1921, #448 |
| Biography* | | W. E. Clark of Tyrone, PA (1995) recalls his grandmother, a daughter of Juliann Stonebraker and William Sessamen, telling him that prior to meeting her husband, she rejected a proposal by Lee Stonebraker. She then introduced him to her best friend, Kattie Etters, whom he eventually married. Mr. Clark's mother tells of visiting "Uncle San" as a child with her father. He lived in the lower Bald Eagle Valley, near Hickory Bottom, in a log house. She remembers that the boys' sleeping area was on the second floor and that access was from outside and up a ladder. She remembers that when she visited she stayed very close to my grandfather out of fear of the Stonebraker family dog. |

Levi Cozart1 (M) b. 1824, d. 20 December 1893, #449 |
| Father* | circa 1781 | Levi Cozart |
| Mother* | circa 1788 | Elizabeth 'Betsy' (?) |
| Biography* | | He is probably the Levi Cozart who married Martha J. Hathaway in 1844 in Meigs County, OH. If he is, then his birth date is probably 1824 which would have made him age 20 when he married. The letter on file from Harry Williams in 1993 states that Levi was born 1824 and left and never returned after the marriage to Martha Hathaway. The 1828 birth date that turns up in several records would have made him only 16 at that marriage. In 1850, Levi is living in the Abel Emerson household in Muskingum Co, OH, listed as Levi Gosart. In February of 1851, he married Sarah Emerson, daughter of Abel. Seven weeks later, Sarah alone purchased Lot 4 of the Williams addition in the town of Dresden from William K. and Elizabeth Burch for $150.00. Sarah was only about 16 at the time and son Andrew Levi was only two weeks old. There was probably a house on this lot and daughter Susan may have been born here in November 1853. In September 1854, she and Levi sold this land to Henry M. Ray for $185.00. Levi signed and Sarah made her mark. It is likely that Sarah was somehow related to William Kinsey Burch or his second wife Elizabeth or the sale of Lot 4 would have been to her husband Levi. Then a son of William K. Burch and his first wife Ann, Jonathan Burch, sold to Levi Cozart on 7 Apr 1858, both parties of Muskingum County, for $1000.00, the NW quarter of section 14 Twp 3 70+ acres (Vol 35, p. 113). Where did they get $1000.00 to purchase land? Possible father Levi Cozart did not die until July 1859 according to a typed transcript of Jackson County, VA death decords. The original death register has been examined and the 1859 date is not in error. In the 1860 U S. Census of Muskingum County, OH, Levi Cozart states he is age 29 (he is probably closer to 36 at that time) and has real estate valued at $1,100.00 and personal property worth $515.00. Sarah indicates she is 25, which probably about right. Andrew and Susan's ages are correct. Charles is listed as age three, but was probably only about 1 and one half years old. Levi and Sarah sold their land on 19 Oct 1860, to George G. Myers (Vol 38, p. 91) for $1224.00. Levi signed. Sarah made her mark. In the Fall of 1860, he moved his family to Indiana and then to Iowa in 1862, per the obituary of his daughter Susan. The Jones County History 1879 also states he came to Iowa in 1862, was a farmer in Section 11, in politics, Democrat, had been school director, and in religion, liberal. The gravestone for son Charles clearly reads death 16 Jan 1862 (Photo of stone in file), so either the Cozarts arrived in the first few days of 1862 or they came in 1861. It's also possible that the stone is a memorial only and that the child is buried somewhere in Indiana. On March 28, 1866, Levi Cozart of Jones Co, IA sold Lot L Sect 34 T 84 Book 26, p. 629, 45 90/100 acres swampland for $68.85. 6 May 1875, Levi Cozart and wife Sarah sell to Andrew Emerson, all residing in Jones Co, IA, fractional lot 1 in section 34 in township 84, 45 & 90/100 acres. 23 Oct 1875, Jones Co, IA, S. S. Squires and wife Sarah J. of Delaware Co, IA sell to Levi Cozart, of Jones Co, IA, for $3200.00, the SE quarter of the SE quarter and fractional lot no. 3 in Section 2 and the E half of the NE quarter section 11 in Township 83, 160 acres. 14 February 1883, Levi Cozart and wife Sarah sell back to S.S. Squires the same land for $4800.00. In the Iowa 1885 State Census, he is listed as Andrew Cizzort age 57, born VA, with wife Sarah age 48 and son Abraham (Abel). |

- [S2300] The letter in file from Harry Williams states that Levi, son of Levi and Betsy, was born 1824, married Martha Hathaway, moved away & never returned. The birth dates agree. (Martha would have then have to have died or divorced between her 1844 marriage and Levi's 1851 marriage to Sarah Emerson.) And Levi & Betsy named a daughter Mazella. Levi Jr. named a daughter "Mad Ma Mazella" probably a nickname for Mazella, a take off of madmoiselle. Paul T. Cozart, writing a book on Levi, writes that through correspondence with Harry Williams, he received a copy of a 1967 letter from Mrs. Martha Viola Leeds and that she had handwritten the name Levi Jr beside the Levi Sr 1840 census for a son 10-15.

- [S2304] Richard Branch and Mary Ann Waite family records compiled and supplied by Cathy Murray 8/2001 <e-mail address> Cathy is not a Waite descendant, Cathy wrote, "Jeff Branch of Seattle WA <e-mail address> went to Bellefontaine Cemetery last Spring. He found that in grave 1739, belonging to Henry Bakewell, Joseph W. Branch and William Edmonson, there were about 26 burials. Amongst them were seven that had been transferred in May 1878. Those seven were: Mrs Waite (Elizabeth Midgley?),
George W and Edward W Branch (children of Richard Branch and Mary Waite), Sarah E and Joseph W Branch (children of Joseph W. Branch), Frederick W and Ida M. Branch ( I am not sure where Frederick fits in, these were not cholera victims of June 1854). The archivist of the Diocese of Missouri, Sue Rehkopf, searched the records of the Grace Episcopal Church and found that the seven that had died of cholera in 1854 had been buried in the Wesleyan Cemetery in 1854, we don't know why five of them (Mrs. Joseph Branch and Mr. Bennet were not included) were later moved to the big grave site in Bellefontaine."
