Father* Mathias Boger Jr.
Mother*before 29 May 1759Barbara Foerster
Biography*      In the 1807 Letterkenny Twp, Franklin Co, PA tax list, he is listed as a single freeman. He would have been about 23. In the 1810 U.S. Census, he is listed in Letterkenny Twp, Franklin County, PA, p. 926, next door to his father. His wife was between age 16 and 26. No children were listed. He was also confirmed that same year at Salem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hall, Franklin County, PA.
On 25 Mar 1811, he attended the estate sale of John Sollinger and purchased by note: 1 lantern for 30 cents, 6 pewter plates for $1.86, 1 pewter dish for $1.25, 1 woman's saddle for $11.00 and 1 red heifer for $6.10.
In the National Archive's Records of Enlisted Men in the U.S. Army (M-233), Benjamin Boger is listed as a private in the 22nd U.S. Infantry in the War of 1812. Records show that he was 5' 6" with brown hair, a dark complexion, age 29 and born in Pennsylvania. His records read, "Muster Roll Sept. 18 & Oct 21 1813 Present - Muster Roll Dec 5 1813, Sick at Philadelphia - Muster Roll Feby 4 1814, Present. Appears to have again enlisted Mch 4 1814 at New Utrecht Garrishon by Capt. J. Stalk for the war - Muster Roll Capt. Jno Steele Jr's Co. Sandy Hook. June 28, 1814 and Co. Book 1814 and 1815, Deserted from Sandy Hook June 15, 1814 - D.R. Capt J. Carmack's Co 22nd U.S. Infantry Feby 16, 1815, Absent J.F. Feby [28?] 1815, Present - deserted from 22 U.S. Infantry June 15, 1814 & surrendered himself under the President's Proclamation of July 28, 1814 - Present, March 2- 1815- Muster Roll April 30 1815, Present." By August of that year he had died. The records do not show whether he died from illness or in battle. Many soldiers deserted in the Spring each year. They went home to plant their fields.
Through Carol Durfee of Altoona, PA, I received a copy of a drawing of a soldier in War of 1812 uniform, identified as Benjamin Boger, which has passed down in her family. Orphan's court records in Franklin County, PA show that Benjamin left one child, a daughter, Susannah.

Biography*      Joseph Boger first turns up in the tax lists of Franklin Twp, Fayette Co, PA in 1829 as a wagon maker. He remained on that list each year through 1856. Then he was on the Dunbar Township tax list 1857 through 1879. Most years he was listed as a wagon maker but a few times he was listed as a farmer. Most years he owned one or two cattle and one or two horses.
On 10 Nov 1829, Joseph Boger and Joseph Dillon purchased lot 53 in Perryopolis, Fayette County from Thomas Williams and wife Mary. On 30 Mar 1830, Joseph Boger married Jane Gipson. They, along with Joseph and Catherine Dillon, sold it 3 Oct 1831, to George Mitchell for $23.00. Then on 14 Mar 1832, the four of them purchased lot 38 in Perryopolis from Joseph Boger & Catherine (Boger) Dillon's aunt Christianna (Boger) and husband Henry Forrey for $225.00. This lot had a house on it. Possibly the four of them lived in it. At this time, Joseph and Jane Boger had a 16-month-old son Samuel and possibly their daughter Rebecca had been born or was about to be born. There is no recorded deed for the sale of this house.
Supposedly Vol. T, p. 171 [p. 121?], shows that on 23 Apr 1835, Joseph Boger purchased from the William Byers descendants for $1,541.00, land in Fayette County but this transaction is not on this page. In the Court of Common Pleas March Term 1855, Joseph Boger lost a case to Joseph Woodward, John Langly, Thomas Rankin, Benjamin Bruer and John Bute for $2,193.30 plus $6.50 in court costs. The sheriff was directed to sell his land, 80 acres of which 60 acres were cleared. It contained a two-story frame dwelling house, a frame stable, a wagon maker's shop, a log house and log barn. It sold at public auction 5 Jan 1856, for $3,250.00 to James Curry of Franklin Township. [Vol. 9 p. 449]
The survey index in Fayette County, PA shows that on 28 June 1836, Joseph had 80 3/4 acres and 76 acres 30 perches surveyed near Laurel Hill Meeting House. The 80 acres is probably the land mentioned in the previous paragraph.
After the forced sale of his home, Joseph Boger purchased on 20 Apr 1863 from John Bute's estate [he was one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit], the property known as the James Huston Farm and Mill property. It contained about 23 acres, a dwelling house, gristmill, saw mill and distillery plus other buildings. It was located in Franklin Township and cost $955.00. [Vol. 14, p. 191.]

Johann Nicholas Frankforter1 (M)
b. circa 1735, d. December 1794, #426
Father*before 1715(?) Franckfurter
Mother*circa 1710Anna Catharina (?)
Biography* Compiler: Mary Riter 2001
PARENTS, BIRTH PLACE and BIRTH DATE
From his naturalization record, we know Johann Nicholas FRANKFORTER was born in Germany, but as of this writing, the actual birth place has not been located. Family lore tells us the family originated in Frankfurt and there is probably some truth to the story. The very earliest members of the FRANKFORTER family probably originated in the Frankfurt area, but in all likelihood later generations no longer resided there. Some FRANCKFURTER records can be found in the register of the Evangelical Church in the little village of Munsterappel, located just south of Bingen in the Pfalz region of Germany. However, none of the three Johann Nicholas FRANKFURTERs who were baptized in the church can be identified as our immigrant ancestor.
Only Nicholas' mother has been identified with any certainty -- and even then, we do not know her maiden name. The positive identification of Anna Catharina comes from the will of Charles HELWIG, her 3rd husband, who died in March 1764 in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County PA. In his will dated January 2, 1764, and proved on April 1, 1765, Charles leaves his estate to his wife Catharine. After her death, the remainder was to be divided equally among his children Henry, Adam, Peter, Charles and Elizabeth HELWIG and his "wife's children Peter GOD-SHALL and Nickolas FRANCKFURTER ...share and share alike."
Our first glimpse of Anna Catharina FRANCKFURTERIN comes from the register of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancas-ter, Lancaster County, PA where she is listed as a communicant sometime after July 27, 1748 -- probably on or before November 27th. She next appears in the same records with her son Peter GOTTSCHALCK as communi-cants on the following Easter Sunday -- March 26, 1749. On Easter Sunday, April 15, 1750, Catharina FRANCKFURTERIN, widow, was again among the communicants. The next mention of Catharina was on Au-gust 26, 1750, at the baptism of her grandchild Catharina Elisabeth, the daughter of son Peter GOTTSCHALL. Anna Catharina's last appearance in Trinity Church records is on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1751, when she, son Peter GODSHALL and his wife Catharina all took communion. Anna Catharina and Charles HELWIG were married after April 7, 1751 -- probably later that year or in early 1752.
The identity of Nicholas' father remains a mystery. Records of ships entering the Port of Philadelphia list 3 FRANCK-FURTER men among the immigrants. Of the 3, only the earliest, Caspar, who arrived on the Ship Edinburgh and qualified on 5 Sep 1748, could possibly be Nicholas' father. The other two -- Gerhart FRANKFORDER, who qualified 1 Oct 1754, and Henrich FRANCKFORTHER who qualified 16 Oct 1772 -- arrived too late to be Anna Catharina's husband and, therefore, Nicholas' father. Other than his mention on the ship manifest, we can find no further record of Caspar. He was identified as being sick and did not sign, so it is possible he died shortly after arriving in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, Caspar's arrival in Philadelphia at about the same time as Anna Ca-tharina's first appearance in Lancaster church records is not proof enough to confirm him as Nicholas' father. Since most Germans of that era named their eldest children after their parents, it would seem logical that at least one of Nicholas' 3 sons would have been named Caspar -- and none were. Caspar may have been Nicholas' un-cle -- or older brother, or cousin. However, Nicholas' first daughter was baptized Anna Catharina -- his mother's name.
For the most part at that time in history, only the names of men above the age of 15 were recorded on ship manifests and immigration lists. Some very early records listed the names of women and children as well, but unfortunately the practice was not widespread. Because Johann Nicholas, who was born in Germany, is not mentioned on any ship list, we may surmise that he was under the age of 16 when he immigrated. Since his mother's records in America begin in 1748 and his half-brother can be placed in Lancaster church records a year earlier, Johann Nicholas al-most certainly immigrated no later than 1748 -- making his birth date not earlier than 1732 and probably not later than 1738.

NICHOLAS AND MARIA ELISABETH AND THEIR CHILDREN
Although his mother and half-brother appear in the Trinity Lutheran Church register many times, Johann Nicholas is not mentioned in the records until his marriage to Elisabeth STOLL/STOLLIN on July 31, 1759. Nicholas was probably at least 21 years old when he married. At that time in history, men usually waited until they were "of age" and had saved a bit of money before undertaking married life. Unfortunately, Maria Elisabeth's parents are not mentioned in the marriage record, and a careful study of all STOLLs and STOLLINs in the Trinity Church register has yielded no clue to their names.
On April 6, 1760, a little more than 9 months after their marriage, the following baptism is recorded in the Trinity Lu-theran Church register:
     Anna Catharina FRANCKFURTER, b. 8 Mar 1760, bp 6 Apr 1760
     Parents: Michael and Catharina Elisabet
     Sponsors: Peter GOTTSCHALL, Catharina, wife
Whoever wrote the original record may have embellished the "N" in "Nich'l" and it has been misread as "Mich'l". Support for the conclusion that this is Nicholas' and Elisabeth's first child comes from these facts:     1.     The child was born about 9 months after the marriage
     2.     Anna Catharina is the name of Nicholas' mother.
     3.     The sponsors are Nicholas' half-brother and his wife.
     4.     Nicholas mentions daughters Catrina and Catharina in his will. This is Catrina.
     5.     There has been no further mention of a Michael FRANCKFURTER in any records.
The mother's name is actually Maria Elisabeth, not Catharina Elisabeth, but errors such as this are not uncommon in the old records.
Three years later, on May 24, 1763, their first son, Johann Philipp, was born. His baptism on 12 Jun 1763 is found in Trinity records. The 3rd child, a 2nd daughter, Maria Magdalena, was born December 19, 1765, and was bap-tized 10 days later at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

THE MOVE TO MARYLAND.
On June 17, 1767, Christian RICHART of Berks County PA conveyed 81 acres in Baltimore County [Oberhoven, 65 acres & Stafisburgh, 16 acres] to Nicholas FRANKFURTER. The conveyance was recorded 3 years later on June 16, 1770, in Baltimore County Deed Book AL, #B, p. 277. It seems obvious that sometime after June 17, 1767, Nicholas moved his family from the Lancaster PA area to the Hampstead District of Pipe Creek Hundred in Baltimore County MD. His newly purchased land was south and a bit east of Manchester, which was then lo-cated in Baltimore County, but since 1837 is part of Carroll County.
Nicholas and Maria Elisabeth and their 3 children were residing in or near Manchester in Baltimore County MD by 1768 when Nicolaus FRANCKFURTER appears among the signers of a petition to remove the County Seat to Balti-more Town. On May 28th of the same year, their 4th child, Christina, was baptized in the Reformed & Lutheran Church in Manchester. Her birth date of May 3, 1768, is found in the parish register. The birth and baptism re-cords for the remaining 4 children have not been found. Nicholas and his family had probably moved onto their land in the Hampstead District, which was probably far removed from a church. The ages and birth years for daughters Catharina, b. ca. 1769-1770, and Susanna, b. ca. 1772, have been extrapolated from other records. The birth dates of the 7th and 8th children - sons Frederick, b. March 31, 1773, and Johann "Adam", b. 26 Jul 1778, -- come from family researchers Leona BETTERIDGE and Glorianne FAHS. The information may come from death dates recorded in Immanuel [Zion] Lutheran Church records.
Nicholas and Maria Elisabeth were married for more than 35 years and raised a family of at least 8 children -- 3 sons and 5 daughters -- all of whom reached adulthood. They may have had additional children who died young, but no records have been found to support their existence.

NATURALIZATION AND LAND RECORDS.
On 6 Sep 1769, Nicholas FRANCKFURTER, German, Lutheran, was naturalized in Baltimore Town. The record is found in the Provincial Court Judgment Liber #370, DD-16, 12. The discovery of his naturalization record in Maryland supports the premise that Nicholas was under the age of 16 when he immigrated and therefore not old enough to take the oath of citizenship upon his arrival in Pennsylvania.
The summer following his naturalization -- on June 24, 1770 -- John Nicholas FRANKFORD of Baltimore County re-ceived a patent for 681 acres in the Hampstead District, Manor of Baltimore, which included "Frankford" and a resurvey of "Oberhoven" which he had purchased in 1767 from Christian RICHART. The patent was probably for 600 acres, plus the 81 acres he had purchased from Mr. RICHART. In 1772 and 1773, Nicholas and wife Mary sold 3 parcels of land totaling 383-1/2 acres -- all part of Frankfort -- retaining about 300 acres, more or less, for their own use. In 1783, Nicholas FRANKFORD paid taxes on 300 acres in Baltimore County. At that time, his family consisted of 1 white male [the tax payer] and a total of 10 white inhabitants. Another tax source attributes 311 acres to Nicholas' holdings.
In December 1784, "Honicle" [contraction of Johann Nicholas] FRANKFOTTER bought lot #599 in Baltimore Town for 5 shillings from Conrad ROBERTS, who had married daughter Mary Magdalena in March of the same year
Then on September 3, 1793, Nicholas purchased Lot #596, located in the same vicinity, for £60. Nicholas and Maria Elisabeth may have moved to Baltimore Town and allowed their sons to operate the "plantation". The eldest son, Philip, had married in 1783 and was already the father of 6 children. The two younger sons were both still sin-gle; they married ca. 1797, after their father's death.

DEATH AND PROBATE - THE CHILDREN SCATTER.
Perhaps Nicholas decided to buy property in Baltimore Town because of failing health. For whatever reason, his health must have failed and on December 13, 1794, he wrote his will. If our estimate of his age is correct, he was only (about) 56 to 62 years old. Nicholas probably died before the month was out as the will was proved in court on January 8, 1795, less than a month after it was written. It is possible that Nicholas died in Baltimore Town, but no supportive evidence has been found. In his will, he names his wife Mary, daughters Catharine RUTTER, Magdalena ROBERT, Catrina, Christina and Susanna, and sons Philip, Adam and Frederick.
Maria Elisabeth outlived her husband by several years. It is possible she died as late as 1801 when her sons Philip, Fre-derick and Adam and their wives sold Lot #596 in Baltimore Town for £300. However, records show that son Philip had been paying taxes on the property since 1798, so Maria may have actually died ca. 1797-1798. There is no record of the burial place of either Nicholas or Maria Elisabeth.
On March 26, 1803, Nicholas' heirs sold the remainder of his land -- Frankfort, 302-1/2 acres and Brown's Neighbor, 5 acres -- for £545 current money to Conrad ROBERTS, the widower of daughter Mary Magdalena.
Son Philip remained in Maryland until 1812, when he removed to Columbiana County OH. Sons Frederick and Adam lived out their lives in the Manchester MD area. Daughter Catrina, mentioned in Nicholas' will, does not appear in any of the settlement sales, so she probably died before 1801. Daughter Christina TURNER lived out her life in Rockingham County VA. More research is needed on daughter Catharina RUTTER/RITTER who removed to Shenandoah County VA, and on daughter Susanna ADELSPERGER who removed from the Manchester area sometime after 1803.

STOLL RESEARCH.
Unfortunately, the names of Maria Elisabeth's parents were not mentioned in Trinity Lutheran Church records when she and Nicholas were married. Her surname, given as STOLLIN, is probably the feminine form of the surname STOLL; in German, the "in" is added to a surname to indicate a woman. In checking through both STOLL and STOLLIN names appearing in the church register, a connection cannot be made between Maria Elisabeth and any of the STOLLs mentioned.
