| Father* | circa 1774 | William Brown |

| Biography* | | James Madison Brown was probably born at Smoky Creek, just south of Lenoir, Burke County (now Caldwell County), NC, about 1816. A penciled note in Bertha Boger Wear's handwriting states that he had "red hair and beard all over and was about 5' 6" tall and that he was brought to southern Indiana with his parents." His parents' property was surveyed in the fall of 1834, and they sold their property in North Carolina in the fall of 1835, making James about 19 or 20 years old when they left. On 3 Dec 1851, James M. and Nancy Brown sold to John E. Cooper, the northwest 1/4 of the southwest 1/4 of section 2, township 8, R3W, in Greene Co, IN. Page 248 of History of the Separate Baptist Church by Morgan Scott (Indianapolis: Hollenbeck Press, 1901), states, "Rev. James M. Brown was born in North Carolina; moved to Indiana; settled in Owen County; united with the Salem Church of Owen; was ordained to preach about the year 1853; was a shining light to those around him; moved west to Mercer County, Illinois; quit preaching; died at the age of 56." Actually, he lived in Warren County, IL until 1864. Then he purchased a farm in Mercer County (twp 13 sections 9 and 10) located walking distance from the Mississippi River. All but a small portion if it is now under water as part of the Mark Twain Wildlife Refuge. The property was intentionally flooded for this park. There are only a couple roads in the immediate area that lead into the park but they don't go in very far. I was definitely able to get into section 10, but it was difficult to tell when I was actually on their land. They also had a lot in section 9 but their are no surviving maps of that area old enough to locate their lot "6". I suspect they had a house on that lot and farmed the 70 acres in section 10. Notes made by his grandson, Wyatt Boger, which are attached to Arminda (Brown) Coopers family history, states "Grandfather Brown [Aunt Min's father James Madison Brown] owned a farm north of Keithsburg, Mercer County, IL. The house was on the east side, barn on west 1 1/2 to 2 miles out of town maybe 40 rods from Mississippi River. Cemetery on east side of road." We know he continued to preach because one of his brother Wash's daughters writes a letter to Wyatt Boger stating that as a child she remembered hearing him preach in Illinois. This woman did not live in Indiana as a child. His headstone at Main Cemetery in Mercer County indicates Civil War service, according to the county chapter of the NSDAR cemetery listings, but it does not list his unit. There is actually a star shape on the stone that was probably a decoration, not a military service indication. A search of the county records and Illinois Adjutant General's report failed to turn up any Civil War records that could be his. The National Archives is unable to locate records without a unit because of the large number of James M. Browns who served from Illinois. A letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery System states, "this headstone was not provided by this office or its forerunner, the Quartermaster General of the Army." Therefore, it is my opinion that the person who walked the cemetery for the DAR was in error about his Civil War service. The cemetery where he is buried has been abandoned and has no road leading to it. In the 1960s the stones were vandalized and most are on the ground and broken. James and his son Ishmael's headstones and footstones are laying on the ground and it is now impossible to tell exactly where the gravesites are. James' headstone was laying face up covered by mud. The cemetery is up on a hill surrounded by trees in the middle of a farm and is not fenced. Cattle graze over the graves. It is a beautiful, peaceful spot. A penciled note in the margin of the book History of the Separate Baptist Church states "pneumonia" next to the words "died at age 56." The 1870 Mortality Schedule, Keithsburg Twp, Mercer Co, IL, lists family no.33, James M. Brown, age 53, male, white, married, born Indiana (should be NC), died August, occ. farmer, cause of death: Consumption. Because tuberculosis can be a very long disease process, it is possible that he suffered from it for many years and it may be the reason he quit preaching. His probate records are in the court house in Mercer County, Illinois. On 21 September 1869, Nancy Brown was appointed administrator. She signed with an "X". Nancy held a sale at her home on Saturday, 13 Oct 1869, to sell James Brown's personal property. She sold one mare, one yearling mule, four head of cattle, eleven head of sheep, seven head of hogs, ten acres of corn and a lot of rye wheat and oats. She signed this paper with her signature. At the sale she purchased it all except the mule and a calf which were purchased by Asa B. Freeman. The total sales were $261.95. The farm is appraised at $2.50 an acre for 20 acres of timberland and $20.00 an acre for 43 acres of improved land. The list of chattel property includes: 1 roan cow, 1 black cow & calf, 1 red cow & calf, 1 white heifer, 1 red heifer, 19 head of sheep, 1 brown mare, 1 yearling mule, 1 set harness, 3/8th of one reaper, 1 plow, 1 hay rake, 1 grindstone, 7 head of hogs, 15 acres corn, 109 bushels wheat, 32 1/3 bushels rye, 41 1/2 bushels oats, 1 wagon, 1 dun mare, and 1 sorrel horse.

Nancy Agnes Christy1 (F) b. 20 December 1820, d. 17 December 1893, #362 |
| Father* | 30 April 1795 | John Christy |
| Mother* | circa 1794 | Abigail Fraser |
| Biography* | | Nancy Christy Brown is described (pencil notes by Bertha Boger Wear) as 250 lbs, 5' 8", gray eyes, light brown hair, spun wool and cotton, wove cloth, bedspreads & rugs, smoked clay pipe, made yarn and thread, knitted mittens and socks. Joyce Miller has a cotton blanket or bedspread woven by Nancy Brown. It is a very detailed, beautiful, plaid pattern in navy and white showing great skill. In North Carolina through Four Centuries by William S. Powell, he states, "About 1813 Michael Schenck built North Carolina's first cotton mill near Lincolnton; soon afterward more than 40,000 looms, widely acattereed in the state, produced more than 7 million yards of cloth--exceeding that manufactured in Massachusetts." Possibly Nancy learned to weave there from her mother. Mr. Powell also states, "The use of tobacco, which was believed to have medicinal properties, was widespread in the colonial period. Men of all classes and women of the lower classes smoked pipes." In A Pictorial History of Indiana by Dwight Hoover, he states, "Tobacco was enjoyed by both sexes, either to smoke or dip as snuff; and flax served as the main textile source until sheep arrived to provide wool... The traps, guns, hoes, cradles, and other farming tools shared space with the spinning wheel or loom if the family were affluent enough." In a letter dated 2 Feb 1976 to Florence Larkin from Maxine --?--, she refers to the questions she "asked Aunt Adah for you." "How long did Nancy Christie Brown live on the place where she died? Aunt Adah was only 9 years old when N. C. B. died and she had lived there as long as Aunt Adah could remember -- several years -- Her (NCBs) funeral was held in the home where she died. -she thought perhaps A. J. Randles saw that the stone was on the grave and may have carved the N. B on it himself." "Did grandma have property that was inherited by her children? No. Grandma had nothing. was supported by `Uncle' Jap Brown, a Civil War veteran." Nancy's son William Jasper Brown died Jnauary 1895 so he outlived his mother by a little more than a year.
Letters in file written by Nancy Brown:

[note: Joyce Boger Miller suggests that Nancy means that the calf was doing badly and about down or that he was bad about doing something.]
"History of Republic Co, KS 1868-1964" by Republic Co Hx Soc, no date. (probably 1964) History of the Chruch at Liberty Center School In the early 80's, quite a revival broke out at the church in which whole families were saved and confessed Christ as Lord. Among them as charter members were: Mr and Mrs. John Brown and family; Jap Brown; and...." Nancy is not listed. There must be some records of that church around. I wonder if anything else is listed about the Brown family.
David & Jap sold the land in Republic Co, KS in September 1880. They bought it 16 Sep 1876 SW 1/4 Sec 22 (Liberty Twp) T1R3 160 acres. Then it appears Nancy & Jap moved on to Crowley Co, KS by 1885. |

Her nationality is recorded as American and she was a widow at time of death. The complication of her illness was listed as Bronchitis with the duration of complication being three weeks and duration of disease one month. The physician returning certificate was J. C. Mosshart M.D. of Chester, Nebraska. Her occupation was listed as housewife. To the best of my knowledge this is an accurate record of the death of Nancy H. Brown. Done at Belleville, Kansas, this 28th day of November, 1972. (Signed) Carl E. Larson, Republic County Clerk." Copy supplied by Leslie Randels Gillund.

"Died, De[c] 17th. of dropsy of the heart Mrs Nancy Brown aged 73 years, after an illness of four weeks. She leaves three sons J. J. Brown, David Brown, and Jasper in this county, and two daughters, Mrs. Reynolds [should be Randals] and Mrs. Boger, and one daughter in Missouri. The funeral services were preached at Spring Hill church by Rev. Craft of Belleville tp. Her remains were interred in the Rechester cemetery in Rose Creek Tp".
- [S1609] Receipt from Rose Creek Cemetery, "Rose Creek Township, Republic Co., Kan. May 9th 1893. This is to certify that for and in consideration of Two Dollars in hand paid, the Rose Creek Cemetery Association has this day sold unto A. Boger of Seiberty th [?] County of Republic, State of Kansas, Lot No., _____ as per recorded plat of the above Cemetery Grounds. Said Association agrees to make warrantee deed for the same upon grantee paying the expense of making said deed. (signed) J.E. Cooper, President and W.M. Moore, secretary." Original in possession of the compiler. [Rechester and Rose Creek Cemetery are one and the same. Did Abigail Boger purchase this lot for her mother?].
- [S670] April 2000 visit to Belleville, Republic Co, KS by Win Wood: Genealogical records at the local library show the cemetery where Nancy is buried to be Rose Creek, not Rechester as is listed in her obituary. A man living next to the cemetery, who states that he is age 75, told me that the cemetery was named ReGester but is now called Rose Creek. Nancy's field stone was found by Ron Wood. It is just as described in family records. It is an old field stone with the initials N.B. carved in it. Family records show that her son Jasper did the carving. The stone is now set in a block of cement that is about 12 by 20 inches. Written neatly in the cement is "Nancy C. Brown 1820-1893." I do not know who set the field stone in cement but it appears to have been done fairly recently.

Rose Anna Brown1,2,3,4,5,6,7 (F) b. 15 August 1855, d. 15 June 1952, #368 |
| Father* | 1816 | Rev. James Madison Brown |
| Mother* | 20 December 1820 | Nancy Agnes Christy |
| Biography* | | Information that Rose Anna was abused by Sal Martin came through the family. Later Leslie Randals Guilland wrote that she spoke with Fred T. Randals and he related that Sal and Rose Anna lived in Missouri about the late 1890's with their two or three children. Sal was abusive to her and she took the children via horse and wagon to Chester, Nebraska, where her sister Lucinda lived. Pauline Goekin relates that Rose Anna brought just the three youngest children to her sister's when she left Sal. Vernis Boger wrote, "Aunt Rose came out, from where I don't know, to visit Grandpa and Grandma (her sister Abigail and husband) when I was small. She also spent a few days with us in the sod house. She wound up a ball of string and sewed it up so Fannie and I had a ball to play with which went over big with us. She was a little woman. Aunt Rose's first husband was San Salvador Martin and they had several children. Among them was a son, Jasper 'Jap' Martin. Jap and his wife had one child, I believe, a girl. They lived in Fairbury, Ne. where Jap had a barber shop for many years. Rose's second husband was a Morey and they had several children [I think that they did not have children as Rose was 50 when they married.]. Among them a son Joseph 'Joe'. I seem to remember there was something about the town of Leiit [Leoti? or Lenora? Beloit?], Kans. mentioned in connection with them." A letter in file written to Abigail Boger by Rose Anna, "Lenara Kans May 4 1917 Dear sister I will try and write to you a few lines to let you no i am well and got home al rite hope you are both well it is cloudy and has bin raining some all most all the time sence i came home how is Franks folks i got a card from Myrtle Monday after she got to Belleville and Walter wasent there to meet her so she had to wait for him i got home 10 minutes aft 9 o'clock and gladys was washing and I helped her finish i have not had akes [aches?] sinc i came hom i gess is it around to much i went out home with one of my nabers [neighbors?] to night and stayed all night they Brought me back the next day it looks like the [no word here maybe meant to write "sun"] was going to shine well gladis has got dinner ready so i gess i will quit for this time is wish you was here for diner today so good by ans this an i will write a gain and Derect to Mrs. R. San Salvador 'San' Martin1 (M) #373 |
| Biography* | | Pauline Goekin, in an interview in 2002, states that San was actually born in the country San Salvador. His mother was from a wealthy family (hogs in Chicago?) who disapproved of her marriage to San's father, and disinherited her. They went to San Salvador, San was born, then his mother died shortly thereafter, and San's father and the baby returned north to the Chicago area. Pauline's notes state that San was raised by "Cindy Reynolds," who was probably Lucinda Randels. Rose Anna left San with the 3 smallest children and went to her sister Lucinda's in Nebraska, traveling in a covered wagon from Missouri. She divorced San and later married Orlin Morey, who was a good husband to her. Later in Iowa, San was in a constant argument with a neighbor over hogs and cattle coming into San property. The neighbor taunted him constantly about it and according to Wyatt Boger, a threat was made by San that if the neighbor did not keep his livestock in his own property, San would kill him. In the year 19--, San kept that promise and according to a newspaper article, San killed the neighbor and this two grown sons. Pauline Goekin said that San was convicted and spent time in the Iowa state penitentary, but was shortly thereafter moved to a place for the insane where he soon died. This location was in Iowa, close to the Nebraska border. He was buried in Nebraska close to the Iowa border. San at one time lived in Preston, NE. |

Catherine Bowers (F) b. circa 1783, d. 7 November 1864, #376 |
| Biography* | | Mabel (Frankfather) Boger, daughter of Samuel, interviewed Noah Frankforter at Tobias, NE in August of 1941: "Catherine (Bowers) Swarts, mother of Elizabeth, died of a cancer on the top of her head. After Mr. Swarts died, Catherine made her home with Andrew and his wife Elizabeth. Uncle Noah remembers her well and remembers that Aunt Lide Hartz dressed this cancer for her grandmother." Michael Swarts died 18 Jan 1855, so Andrew Frankforter was still married to Elizabeth Swarts at the time her mother lived with them. I would suppose that after Andrew's wife Elizabeth died Dec 1856, that Catherine went to live with another of her children. Catherine is found in the 1860 census of Richfield Twp, Henry, OH living with her son David. She is age 77, born MD. David's wife had died 26 Aug 1859, so I wonder if she remained in this household. Was she able to take care of David's family? |
