Joseph Lewis1,2,3,4 (M)
b. 16 June 1792, d. 4 December 1880, #184
Father*circa 1760David Lewis
Mother* Martha (?)
Biography* Joseph first appears in the tax list of Huntingdon Co, PA, in 1820, as a single freeman. We know him to be married in 1812, so this listing would be in error. In 1822, he is listed not as a single freeman but as having "one occupation." In 1822, he is taxed on 1 cow. In 1825, he has his father's 60 acres, possibly inherited.
      In the 1830 Census he is in Half Moon Twp, Center Co, PA which is located right next to Warrior's Mark Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA.
      1 male 5-10, Samuel;
      1 male 15-20, John;
      1 Male 30-40, Joseph;
      1 female 5-10, Martha;
      1 female 10-15, Margaret, Harriet or Nancy (none of them old enough to marry)
      1 female 30-40, Elizabeth Leaney
      In 1832, he has one cow and an occupation. In 1833, his is listed as "removed." In 1838-40, he has one horse, one cow and an occupation.
      In the 1840 Census he is listed in Warriors Mark Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA, but he is not present for the census. The count was 5 then crossed out to 4. His household consists of:
      1 male 15-20, Samuel;
      2 females 15-20, Martha & probably Nancy (Harriet is married);
      1 female 40-50, Elizabeth Leaney
      In 1841, his name is crossed off. This is the year Blair County was formed from Huntingdon, and he probably appears on that list without having moved. He is on the 1846 tax list in Snyder Township, Blair County, PA with one occupation, 1 cow and 2 horses.
In the 1850 Census of Blair Co, PA, he is listed as age 58, laborer, born PA, with real estate valued at $600.00. Daughter Martha, age 29, is living with him.
In the 1860 U.S. Census of Blair County, PA, he lists his occupation as "Lumberman." He is 68, born in PA, has real estate valued at $2000.00 and personal property valued at $150.00.
Someone sent me a copy of a letter from Martha (Cryder) Fleck to her aunt, Martha Lewis, daughter of Joseph. I am fairly certain this original letter was loaned to me by Robert Lee Cassady. The envelope has a picture of an eagle with a flag and below it is a star with a shield. Above is written "Not a star must fall." The return address is "Arch Spring, Pa Mar 22/ 1862." It is addressed to Miss Martha Louis, Oliva Blair Co Pa. "Sinking Valley, Blair Co, March 21th 1862, Dear Aunt, I will once more sit down to let you know how I am getting along by this time we are all well at present and hoping that these few lines may find you enjoying the same great Blessing but I will hafto say of myself that I have not been very well all winter but I am better than I was. Maggie is well and as fat as need be. She can almost sit alone. She sleeps all night now we have not to get up with the her. It is pretty sickly about here now most every body big and little have got the measles. Maggie has not them yet but I expect she will get them. Tell Ellen that I think she might take time and write me a few lines and let me know how she is prospering any how. Tell nan I wish her a safe jorney when she moves. news are scarce with me this time. I would like to come over but I do not know when I will get over. I might this summer and if I don't this summer I will next winter if I am spared so long but I would like to see you all and talk to you. I am too sleepy to write much more give my love to Grandfather, and all of the rest of the friends and tell them all to come over tell ellen that Jennie sends best respects toher, she is here playing with Maggie while I rite. John and Ellen were up here last week and said they were all well down there. I most forget to tell you that I received your letter and was very glad to hear from you but sorry to hear you were not well I hardly know what to write I could talk a great deal better to you if you were here than I can write. but as we cannot be together now pen and ink must do. I must bring my scribling to a close tell ellen we want her to come over and stay 2 weeks tell her that Jennie says she has got her a nice beau. She says she knows he will please her. I must quit for this time as it is bed time Abram send his love to all the friends and says he would like to see you all. all come over. Nothing more but still remain Your niece. Martha. write soon for I like to hear from you / soon very soon."
In 1870, he lists his occupation as "laborer." No real estate is listed but his personal property is valued at $300.00.
In the 1880 census, his occupation in "Sawyer." He is 87 and "infirm" and lists both of his parents as born in Wales. His father was not born in Wales and he probably meant that they were of Welsh descent. He died in December of that year.
In a letter dated 9 March 1881, Harry Cassady writes to his uncle, Andrew Boger, "I have a sled that my great grandfather made me last summer and now he is dead and I haft to keep it now when he is dead and gone to Remember him. it seems very lonesum now." The great grandfather he is referring to is surely Joseph Lewis because he died in December preceding the writing of this letter. Harry Cassady's son, Robert, had never heard of the sled when he was questioned in 1994. Harry Cassady also made mention of a saw mill in his 1881 letter. Joseph Lewis was a Sawyer. "The saw mill is not running now the dam busted about five years ago and now the wheels and the iron is all sole [possibly sold?] and now it is rotting down."
Ellen Boger Cassady, in a letter to her brother Andrew Boger dated 30 December 1912, writes about their grandfather Joseph Lewis's home. "Grandfather's house is still standing in pretty good shape yet though it has been fixed in a good many places since you left. long years before grandfather died he got it weatherboarded & took the chimney out and he built a kitchen to the end of the house & pailed the yard [possibly she meant paled which refers to stakes used to make fences] & after Aunt Martha died, Mr. George Lewis bought the house and lot & has been living there ever since. Mr. Lewis is Mother's full cousin he came from Indiana County when a young man and married a girl in this valley & after Aunt Martha's death he bought the house. he has made a few changes about the house. he has put two roofs on the house since he been living in it he put a steel roof on last summer. part of the old Stable is still standing & is in use. Mr. Lewis works at what ever he can get to do. he has a wife and two sons one son is married." Aunt Martha Lewis died June 1884, and the land was transferred by George D. & Allie Blair to George Lewis in 1891. It sold again in 1921 to Calvin Sharer from George Lewis & wife Annie V. The survey in 1888 shows Sanford Stonebraker on one side and Henry K. Nearhoof family on another side.

Biography* Mabel (Frankfather) Boger's revised history in 1941 states he moved to Mahoning Co., Ohio, in 1812 and then moved to Wood Co., Ohio in 1854 to what was then known as Pottertown and operated a sawmill there. A letter in file dated October 26, 1915, Elizabeth (Frankforter) Hartz wrote to Mabel Boger, "...My father was born May - 11 - 185 [1805] in Fredrick Co My and emigrated to Mahoning Co Ohio 1812." The letter is signed Aunt Lide.
In 1940, George Bell Frankforter told Della Boger that his father, Andrew, was a very religious man and wanted all of his sons to have biblical names. He also said that at Potter, Ohio, during the Civil War, some copperheads got ahold of his father Andrew once and were about to dump him in some boiling water in tanks because they blamed him in some manner for the war and that Aunt Lida [Elizabeth Frankforter Hartz, daughter of Andrew] grabbed an axe and threatened to chop their heads off and saved his life. Copperheads were Unionists who deemed it impossible to conquer the South. The more radical opposed conscription, discouraged enlistment in the army and were suspected by many of co-operating directly with the Confederates. The term copperhead was applied because they struck at their victims without warning.
Andrew was a farmer and a sawyer. In the obituary of his daughter Elizabeth Hartz, it says she was born in Mahoning County, Ohio, and came with her parents in 1854 and lived three miles east and half a mile south of what was called Pottertown, Wood county, where her father ran the old saw-mill."
A newspaper transcription in my possession stated that a child died at the sawmill of Andrew Frankforter.
"DEATH OF ANDREW FRANKFORTER - A Short Sketch of a Very Useful Life Now Ended. Our Roca correspondent sends to the ENTERPRISE the following short sketch of the life of Andrew Frankforter, mention of whose death was made last week. Andrew FRANKFORTER, a notice of whose death was made in the columns of the ENTERPRISE last week, was born near Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, May 11, 1805, and when 7 years old, his father moved from there to Mahoning (then Columbiana; ed note) County, Ohio where Mr. Frankforter grew to manhood and married early in life to a most estimable young lady who became the mother of ten children, all of whom are yet living. The mother many years ago entered into that rest "from whence no traveler has ere returned", leaving the father with ten motherless children. After a season of loneliness, Mr. Frankforter again entered the state of matrimony and gave his heart and hand to Mrs. Bowers, who became the mother of three children, one of which a young lady of great promise died in 1879 or '80 and by whose side in the Roca cemetery rests all that is mortal of the father. From Mahoning County, Ohio, Mr. Frankforter moved with his family to Wood County, Ohio, in 1857, and from there he came to Nebraska in about the year 1870. Of the ten children by his first wife, four are still in Ohio, and six are in Nebraska--three in Saline County, two in Roca, and one in Lincoln. Of the two remaining of the second wife, one, George, is in Europe and is a most efficient scholar in all branches of English Literature as well as master of the German language. Frona (Van Ardel) lives in York County, this state. Seven of the children were present at the funeral, which was largely attended. Mr. Frankforter was beloved by all who knew him. He had not an enemy in all the world. Honest and truthful to the last degree; whatever he said could be relied upon; never came there a word from his lips against any man. If he could say nothing commendable about a fellowman, he said nothing. He sought not faults in others to the hiding of his own. Early in life he became identified with the Lutheran Church, and when opportunities afforded, he was found in the sanctuary. In 1884 he united with the Lutheran congregation at Roca by confession of faith under the ministration of Rev. J.F. Kuhlman, and for whom he had always a great deal of affection, in that he could read for him from his German Bible which he prized so highly.
But he has been gathered to his Father, and let us all remember that As we are now, so once was he And as he is now, so we all soon must be." From Hickman Enterprise, Sat. Aug. 22, 1891; pg.1, col.3
     Mabel (Frankfather) Boger wrote, "In 1872, Andrew and Elizabeth Frankforter, with their three children-- Geo. about 12 yrs. -- Frona about 11 yrs. Sylvia about 10 yrs. came to Nebraska by train. Crossed the Missouri River at Nebraska City, and landed at Cheney, Nebr. on Mar. 25, 1872. Andrew bought a farm for 80 A. from a man named Cross and paid $2,000 for it. This farm was located about 1 1/4 miles NE of Roca, Nebr. This is the home which we remember visiting our Grandparents while we were children. Cheney is about 10 or 12 miles NE of Roca."

Biography* Letter written to Jeanne Tomasich Porter from Iva Grimes, 1975: Noah, David and Elias (my grandfather) joined a covered wagon caravan heading for Nebraska. Going through Illinois--Elias liked the wooded territory as he was a wood cutter--so he got off there with his axe, 50 cents in his pocket and a sandwich. He boarded with a Hurless family and got work cutting down trees and later married the daughter. Elias bought some land, made a clearing and built a log-house. He eventually got enough land for what was considered a family sized farm. There were lots of Indians around there and they found many arrowheads. Later a bigger two story house was built and the log house turned into a hog house--this is the way I seen it. Noah and David went on with the caravan to Nebraska and both settled there, married and raised families. Elias and David had red hair like their mother Elizabeth."

From Jeanne Porter-- After his wife died, Elias came out to South Dakota a few times to visit his daughter Susan and her children. Susan's daughter Letha remembers that Elias didn't speak English very well but that he was very good to Susan and the children. Elias had bees and an apple orchard. Every fall he sent a barrel of apples and a keg of honey.

Father*11 May 1805Andrew Frankforter
Mother*11 August 1804Elizabeth 'Betsey' Swarts
Biography*      His personal description at enlistment in the Civil War, states that he was 5' 9", dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, occupation farmer and engineer. Another paper in his service record states his hair was light and his height was 5' 11". Daughter Mabel's notes indicate he was 5' 11", medium complexion, light brown eyes, brown hair and weighed about 180. 5' 11" was probably the correct height.
     The earliest item located on his life is a note, "I do hereby certify that Samuel Frankfather is here in his spelling class this evening, December 9th Jesse Hahn, Instr." On the back is the date 1847 in Samuel's handwriting. In the 1940's, his daughter Mabel, tried to find out why her father spelled his name differently from his father. In her notes she states that his brother Noah said that a teacher of Sam's told Sam that the name "forter" meant "father" and therefore his name should be Frankfather and from that time on, Samuel used the Frankfather spelling. The spelling class note lends credence to this theory, but Samuel spoke German and would have known that "forter" does not translate to "father." Another story I heard is that Samuel changed his name during the Civil War to differentiate from his brothers. I think it more likely that he spelled his name both ways for a while because a Carte de Visita paper photograph of him made by "Cline's Photograph Rooms No. 13 South 11th St., Lincoln, Neb." from the collection of his daughter Mabel, now in my possession shows that he spelled his name Frankforter after his arrival in Nebraska in 1868. The inscription in Sam's own handwriting on the back: "Sam Frankforter Nebraska."
     Noah Frankforter writes about his childhood, "Moved to Northwestern part of Ohio in Wood County which was called the black swamp country when I was 6 years old. [In 1854, Samuel would have been 15.] Half the country was under water. Very level country and very heavy timber, many trees nine foot through. Everyone lived in log houses with split log flooring and the fireplaces were made out of clay. Very few people had stoves, they cooked on their fireplaces. They baked their bread in iron kettles with iron lids. They would set their kettles in the fireplace and scratch hot coals and ashes up around the kettles to bake their bread. They had what they called cranes which was an iron bar shaped a purpose to hang their kettles on and on this bar were chains so they could hang their kettles any distance they wanted to from the fire. They could pull that crane out away from the fire.
     "They had to take the timber off of this land and then ditch the water away. They had wooden plows with a cast iron point to do their plowing. Their corn and potatoes were tended with hoes. The potatoes those days were very small. They called them "niggertoes". The potatoes were very black outside but very white inside and about the size of an adults thumb. They yielded well. They put the potatoes in a pail of water and used a wooden potato washer and stomped them carefully and the peeling would all come off. Very few tomatoes were eaten, they were raised for ornaments. Most of them were small and yellow in color. The corn was mostly flint corn - eight rows of kernal on the cob. The ears were from six to ten inches long. As to the yield they could not tell as half of their field were stumps. They lived on corn bread or hominy. Their meat was wild which were plenty.
     "It was a very sickly country. They had so many kinds of fever and ague due to the wet country. I was very sickly and did not get to go to school as I should until the war broke out. Five of my older brothers, Henry, Sam, Andrew, David and Jacob were in the Civil War. Father was getting old so I had to stay at home and work. I was 12 years old when the war broke out. I was ready to go as a drummer boy but father said no, he had five boys in the army and that was enough. They got $13.00 a month and hired help was $40.00 a month. I worked on the farm in the summer and on the sawmill and in the timber in the winter."
     In a letter dated 20 Feb 1957, from Otterbein Simon to Mabel Frankfather Boger, he mentions a photograph taken about 1942 or 1943 of the Andrew Frankforter home in Mahoning County, Ohio, where Noah Frankforter was born. He mentioned seeing the old springhouse that they used to keep their milk cool in the summertime. [Original photo in possession of writer.]
     Samuel Frankfather enlisted in the Civil War 2 May 1864, at age 24, at Weston, Ohio, Company I of the 144th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers commanded by Captain McKey for one hundred days. He was honorably discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio, on the 7th day of September 1864. On the company Muster-out Roll, his clothing account of $12.02 was unpaid. During his service, he received an injury, "In the engagement with the enemy at Monveacy, Md on the 9th July 1864, while charging over uneven ground, fell and injured myself producing inguinal hernia. Since my discharge I have constantly worn trusses and suffered a great deal of pain, and have lost much of my time. At the time I received my injury I was sent to Douglas Hospital, Washington. Since have been attended by Dr. H. C. Demaree. I declare a pension for Hernia. [signed] Samuel S. Frankfather 19 March 1878."
     In 1941, Clay Frankfather and Mabel Frankfather Boger dictated the following story. In 1868, he and his wife and two children, Viva Zona and Manley Fuller, made plans to immigrate to Nebraska by covered wagon. Samuel owned a good team of horses named Silk and Ribbon, one of which was a bay with white stockings. When he prepared to leave Ohio, he owed a grocery bill to a merchant there. Payment was demanded and an offer received by Samuel for the horses, but no settlement was made. In order to get out of Ohio, he sent his wife and two children, Viva and Mance, by train to the home of Elias Frankfather at Milledgeville, Carroll County, Illinois. He then exchanged his bay horse for another and was able to continue to Illinois without detection. The description of his outfit had been sent to the place where he would ferry the river, with orders to stop him, but he was not recognized, since he was unaccompanied by his family. He joined his wife and children, with Eliza Frankforter Hartz and her husband, William H. Hartz, Peter and Jeremiah Hartz, who were also going to Nebraska and continued on with their journey by team and wagon. Before reaching the Missouri River, they overtook an emigrant train of several wagons that were drawn by milk cows instead of oxen. This train made short daily trips of not over ten miles per day, on account of caring for the cows. The cream from the milk was placed in a churn on the side of the wagon and the motion of the wagons churned the cream into butter. The Frankfather and Hartz families camped with this train one night and purchased butter and milk from the train. After several days of traveling, they arrived at Lincoln, Nebraska, where Samuel became ill. All the cash he had upon arriving was 29 cents and two postage stamps. The doctor was called and he took the 29 cents as his fee, telling Mrs. Frankfather that she should keep the postage stamps because she might want to write back home to tell of Samuel's death. During this stop in Lancaster County before going on to Roca, Arthur E. was born.
     In Mabel Frankfather Boger's written history, she says that her father Samuel "moved from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Saltillo, Nebr. in 1868 by wagon, with William H, Jeremiah and Peter Hartz."
     In an interview in 1966, Mabel Frankfather Boger stated that Samuel arrived in Nebraska sick with a 19 cent postage stamp and traded horses for oxen. At that time she described him as 5' 11", 170 pounds, lean, dark brown hair, spoke German well and Holland Dutch, liked carpentry, jokes and played the fiddle and joked a lot. In 1990, Lowell Frankforter, grandson of David, a brother of Samuel's, remembered Samuel as a very talented comedian and musician. Samuel played the fiddle and his wife played the piano. He remarked that Samuel and his wife would have been a big hit in Vaudeville.
     Under the homestead act of 20 May 1862, and 21 Mar 1864, Samuel filed for a homestead of 80 acres in August of 1868, application number 3575. In 1966, Mabel Frankfather Boger stated he had a soldier's homestead right for 160 acres. He sold the other 80 acre right to someone who used it in Nebraska. His papers were dated 23 Jun 1869, at the receiver's office in Lincoln. He received the west half of the southeast quarter of section ten, being the only land available in the Lincoln area. It cost him $14.00. It was located five miles southeast of Saltillo and one north and two and a half east of Roca. In 1966, Mabel Frankfather Boger stated he planted cottonwood on the homestead in 1868 [compiler: 1869] which he grew and cut. In the 1941 statement, they said he left the family on the homestead and worked in a store at Saltillo for a man by the name of Phillips. He also worked on the A & N (Atchison and Nebraska) Railroad that was being constructed from Lincoln to Nebraska City in 1869. That was a very severe winter. It was necessary to continue plowing the round the entire night and day to keep it broken up for usage the next day.
     In their statement 28 Mar 1874, James Walker and John Mitchell stated that Samuel built a house twelve by eighteen feet, one story high with a shingle roof. He cultivated about 70 acres of the land. He grew about two and a half acres of forest trees, and forty-two peach trees, built a stable and grainery, a store/smokehouse, house and barns, and planted 80 rods of hedge. This statement was used to get the final certificate, no. 1977, from the land office in Lincoln on 28 Mar 1874 at a cost of $4.00. [Patent date 15 May 1874 Vol. Z, p. 360 W 1/2 of SE 1/4 10-8-7.] He received the patent on 19 Jun 1875. In Clay Frankfather's 1964 statement, he said his father traded his horse team for a team of oxen. They were runaways but he soon broke them of that habit. They raised some crops the second year on the homestead but had to haul everything to Nebraska City to market.
     About 1875 or 1876, they moved to Roca and established a mercantile store there, freighting the goods from Lincoln with a four-horse team. Son Clay was born in Roca in 1876. [3 May 1876, he purchased Lot 7, Block 1, Roca, Vol. Z, p. 361. And on 14 May 1878, Lot 6, Block 1, Roca. And on 4 Mar 1879, he purchased property again but the deed index does not name which property.] During this time Samuel sent money to Ohio to satisfy the grocery account that he had left unpaid when moving from Ohio.
     On 4 Apr 1881, he sold the W 1/2 of NE 1/4 SE 1/4 17-8-7 [Vol 8, p. 351] and purchased on 5 Jul 1881, Lot 7 Block 2, Keys Addition Roca which he sold the same year [Vol. 9, p. 27 and Vol. 10, p. 593].
      They also started a hotel after 1881. On page 1087, of the History of Nebraska, "A hotel has just been opened by S. S. Frankfather, which indicates growth of the village and confidence in its continued prosperity." On 5 Jan 1883, he sold Lot 7, Block 1, in Roca. Could this have been the hotel?
      He was in the grocery business until the spring of 1887 when he disposed of it by trading the store with Peter Porte for a farm three miles southeast or southwest of Hickman. The store was then operated by Porte and Lefferdink. The family then moved on to the Porte farm and borrowed $1500.00 that was put into hogs. Cholera wiped them out. So the fall of that same year, they moved into the town of Hickman, rented a house and then traded the farm for a hardware store and property with a home on it. Mabel stayed with her Aunt Lide in Roca. Her family stayed in Hickman until 1887 or 1890, then went back to Roca. There was a big fire in Roca in Jan 1891. Will Hartz and Fred Schwake operated a store, the hotel was next door. It is unknown if they were affected by the fire.
      Samuel and a friend, J. R. C. Hustead, went to Seibert, Colorado, in the fall of 1888 or summer of 1889, and took a timber claim about eight miles southwest of Seibert. Samuel returned to Nebraska and Mr. Husted moved to Seibert. Samuel forwarded money to Mr. Husted to have tree seed planted on the claim. Husted engaged Walker Glaister to perform the work, but he failed to do it and kept the money. Since seed was not planted, final proof could not be made on the claim.
      In 1890, Samuel started a sawmill in Roca that he operated until the winter of 1892. He moved an engine sawmill from Lincoln and cut timber on the creek. Fred Schwake was employed on this project. Also in 1892, Samuel sold Lots 1 and 2 Block 14, Hickman, NE [Vol. 69, p. 462].
      In Dec 1894, "Anna M. Frankfather and husband" sold Lot 5, Block 5, East Lawn Addition to Hickman [Vol. 79, p. 333]. In the fall of that same year, the family moved to Princeton, Nebraska, and operated a general store and hotel (Mabel referred to it as a rooming house) until the spring of 1896. Mabel stayed in Roca with her Aunt Lide. Clay went to school 1895-96 to Walter Locke. There was a big train wreck near the penitentiary at Lincoln. Eleven people were burned. Herman Schwake, brother of Fred, was in the wreck but not hurt. In 1895, Clay got a job driving team in the stone quarry for Mr. H. F. Warner for $20.00 a month and board. He worked six days a week, ten hours a day and in three months spent $1.50 foolishly and drew a check for $58.50 and thought he had all the money he'd ever want.
      Then in the spring of 1896, Josiah H. "Cy" Bell lived at Idaho Springs, Colorado, and had claims in Bare Hills west of Cripple Creek, Colorado, near Four Mile. His people came to Roca, Nebraska, before the Frankfathers. Before the two big fires April 9th and 11th, the Frankfather family agreed to board his workers. The fires ruined their plans but they went anyway.
      Samuel was drawing a war pension of $8.00 a month payable every three months. So having one team, Samuel and Clay put their money together and with their credit, they bought another team, harness and wagon and two heavy used railroad tents. Viva was married, Manley had gone to Kansas City, and Arthur had gone to Kansas City and then to California, so Samuel, wife and three children, Clay, Mabel and Grace, started for Cripple Creek on 11 May 1896. They had covered wagons, one lumber wagon and a spring (democrat) wagon, two teams and a dog. The trip was four hundred miles per Clay and six hundred miles per Mabel and they both agreed it took forty days. The first stop was made at Princeton, Nebraska, leaving there about 1:00 p.m. May 12th. Hallam, Nebraska, was the next stop and they were delayed there for five days because of rain. On the 6th day they started for Uncle Noah Frankforter's at Tobias, Nebraska, where they were delayed for ten days because of rain. They proceeded to Colorado Springs after another week delay at Mr. J. R. C. Husteds between Vona and Seibert, who they knew from Hickman, and the Jones family two miles east and four north of Seibert for two days. They had hoped to make thirty miles per day. The horses got away in Kansas. They hadn't been broken but a whistle brought them back. They saw lots of cactus. The land on the prairie was fenced but the posts had been pretty well split and cut down for fuel by travelers so the Frankfathers had to burn cow ships. They bought beans and bacon at Limon, Colorado.
      They camped at Boulder Park in Colorado Springs either two days or a week and prospected. Josiah H. "Cy" Bell came from Cripple Creek to meet them and pilot them to Spring Creek, 1 1/2 miles north of Cripple Creek at the foot of Rhyolite and Copper Mountains. They made a short trip up over Cheyenne Mountain but decided it was too steep so went back to the Ute Pass, a little farther but safer. There was a big bonfire at Woodland Park. They went almost to Gillette the second day. It was all uphill until they reached Divide, Colorado, then downhill through the valley to the foot of Four Mile Hill, which took them near the town of Gillette. There they left the main road to go to Cripple Creek then down to Spring Creek without a road. After about two miles, they found a wide space and plenty of room for their tents and a spring with fresh water and they turned their horses loose to pasture on the mountainside. The date was 21 Jun 1896. They spent the fourth of July that year at Victor, Colorado.
      Mr. Jake Abby of Broken Bow, showed them the location where they staked a claim and later Samuel patented it. They named it the Lamartine. They built a log house, one and one half stories, twelve by twenty feet. Then they built an addition and later another house and barn. Samuel's wife and two daughters, Mabel and Grace ran the rooming and boarding house. They boarded up to a dozen miners and also men who drove ore wagons. These men slept in the second log house. The girls helped cook and wait on tables. Clay worked with Cy Bell at Mary McKinney, helped get logs for the house, and stove wood to sell in Cripple Creek. He also worked with Joe Harwick at his mines. Samuel worked the Midway Shaft between Mineral Hill and Bull Hill. He and Clay hauled dry wood to Cripple Creek to burn and house logs to Mr. Altman. They also worked odd jobs, logged and mined. They saved the best logs for their own house. Mabel and Grace went to Spring Creek School. Samuel and Clay also worked on building roads into Cripple Creek for which they received $3.00 per day. They built a road to the top of Mineral Hill for Mr. Hardwick. Joe Hardwick, from Manitou, Colorado, had 5 claims up and down Copper Mountain that he named for his wife, Anna C, Lost Lilly, Artic, Bill Nye and the Florine. (The Lamartine shaft was just below the Anna C.) He also had a tunnel on the south side of the creek which ran back into Mineral Hill some 1000 feet and from which a stream of water flowed continuously and close by there stood a "three-room shack" in which Mr. Paul Kahler and his family lived. He was the son-in-law of Joe Hardwick. Mr. Kahler worked in the Maggie Tremble mine and was a gardener at Glen Erie before 1896, and later a gardener at Glockner Hospital. The Kahler family consisted of Paul, his wife Lena, and children Eddie, Beatrice (later Cummings), Myrtle, Joe and Percy. The Hardwick family was Archie, Joe, Lena and Birdie. Joe Hardwick homesteaded land east of Garden of Gods. Clay wrote that Mr. Hardwick combined his claims into a mining company and stocked it for one million shares at $1.00 per share. It is unknown if those shares actually sold for a dollar each. He kept 500,001 shares for himself.
      In the summer of 1898, George Bell Frankforter and his mother, Elizabeth Clunk Gilson Bowers Frankforter, visited Samuel Frankfather and family at Cripple Creek. During this visit, Elizabeth and granddaughter Mabel had their photo taken at Balanced Rock in Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, the same location where Elizabeth had a photo taken as a young woman. In 1898. Balanced Rock was owned by Paul Goerke and son Curt, who took photos of tourists with the Goerke burros as early as 1880. It was fenced off at that time and if one wanted to see the rock, they had to pay the admission. The rock was sold in 1932. George stayed about ten days and returned to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Elizabeth Frankforter returned to Lincoln after staying a month or six weeks, accompanied by Mabel Frankfather, who was to return to Lincoln to attend school. Mabel's dark green lady's trunk we have was purchased in Cripple Creek for this trip. She stayed with her grandmother, Elizabeth, at Roca about ten days then went to Lincoln to live with the Perle Hartz family while attending school. Before she enrolled in school, the Hartz family moved to Havelock, Nebraska, where Perle was employed in the railroad shops. Mabel accompanied them to Havelock and started to high school. Perle was injured and sent to the railroad hospital in Omaha. His wife left Havelock to return to Roca, and Mabel returned to Roca with her and stayed with her grandmother and Aunt Lide (Eliza Frankforter Hartz). Soon after, Mabel returned to Cripple Creek by train with Josiah H. "Cy" Bell and his son, Robert, who had been visiting relatives in Roca. The bamboo music rack we have was purchased in Cripple Creek.
      In the summer of 1899, gold was discovered in the vicinity of the Lamartine claim. Joe Hardwick had made a strike on the Florine. He sold his stock to Morratt & McClrge for $40,000 and they in turn took out $180,000 in ten months and went no deeper than forty-five feet. On the strength of this find, Samuel sold his claim for $6000.00 less ten percent.
      Two deeds are recorded in Teller County in September and December of 1899, Book 44, p. 26, and Book 45, p. 490. The first is dated 4 Mar 1899, El Paso County, (just before Teller County was formed from El Paso County) S. S. Frankfather of El Paso County to J. O. Hardwick and M. Kinney of El Paso County for $500.00 legal money all that portion of the surface (excluding mineral rights) of a tract of ground 250 feet square extending 250 feet from the mouth of the Minneapolis Tunnel Site and 125 feet on each side of the center line of said tunnel prolonged southerly which may be included within the lines of the Lamartine Lode Mining Claim no. 12394. The other deed is dated 9 Sep 1899, between Samuel S. Frankfather and John W. Proudfit both of Teller County, for $6000. The Lamartine Lode Mining Claim designated by the Surveyor General as lot no. 12394 embracing a portion of Section one in Township fifteen south of Range Seventy West Sixth Principal Meridian Situate in Cripple Creek Mining District in the County of Teller and State of Colorado and being the same land and premises conveyed by the United States of America to the party of the first part by Patent is duly recorded in the office of the County Recorder of El Paso County Colorado in Book 286 at Page 163.
      On 1 Oct 1899, the Frankfathers left Cripple Creek with three wagons and teams. They stopped in "Colorado City" and stayed overnight or a week with a distant relative, Levi Frankforther (son of Jacob, son of Fred). Because of disagreeable winter weather, they loaded their equipment on the train and shipped it to Lincoln, where it was unloaded and freighted by wagon to Roca. They rented a house in Roca for the winter of 1899 and spring of 1900. They skated all winter and Grace attended school there. During that winter of 1899, Samuel and wife made a trip to Hill City, South Dakota, to visit Charlie Hartz. On the way back to Nebraska, they spent the holidays with their daughter Viva and her husband Fred Schwake at Guthrie, Oklahoma.
      In the spring of 1900, the family went by train to Seibert, Colorado, where they stayed for two or three weeks. He thought he was buying the Walton place on the river but found it was up on the divide and backed out by paying some. They bought the Ferris place six miles west and 1 mile north of Siebert. Mr. Ferris' wife was buried on that land and an agreement was made regarding the removal of the body. Grace went to school one mile east of the homeplace because there was no school in Vona. They lived there until the fall of 1903 when they traded the ranch for a store in Colorado Springs that was located at 703 S. Tejon, and which he operated until 8 Sep 1904. By that time, all three of the younger children were married.
      Samuel and wife visited a few months with their son, Arthur E., at Phoenix, Arizona. In a letter dated September 26, 1904, Annie wrote, "Flagstaff Arizona, Dear Mabel, We are in Arizonia & are having a very pleasant time we are at Arthurs & he has a very nice wife & home and everithing nice around him. We drove out to the Cliff Dwellings yesterday it was a Splendid trip. There are splendid sights here. There are so many Volcanic Mountains here it is very different from the Rocky Mts. We left the Springs the 17th & we were two days & two nights on the way and we were very tired when we got here but are all right now. I have not seen Manly he is in the southern part of the state I have written him & expect to hear from him soon. We will stay here untill we hear from Manly. We do not get mail regular on account of the rains & washouts. Your letter was eleven days getting here. Well I don't like this country so well as Colo Springs. It is very cold nights & warm sunny days. If we was in the sheep business we would be all right. but you have got to own land on this mountain if you run sheep. This is under the F... Reserve act. This is a great sheep & cattle country. They keep their stock on the mountain summers & take them south in the winter about 180 miles down to Phoenix. Everything is very high Dry goods & Groceries. Flour $4.50 per hundred & everything else in proportion. You asked how Arthur looked. Just like Charley Marvin just about as big & just such colored hair & eyes, his features are shaped like Fathers. May is fair with sandy hair she is about as big as Grace M. only a little fleshier. She is a splendid dressmaker & has all she can do. I am so homesick I would be glad to see a dog from home. I do not know what we are going to do yet. Father is going to Prescott to see whether he can get a location to suit. It is 60 miles from here. Bill Gammel of Nebr lives there. I do not know anything about Manly we have written several letters but cannot hear anything of him. I am not very well here the altitude is too high for me it affects my heart like it did at Cripple Creek. We are not going to Nebr yet your father thinks he will go into a small business at Prescott. I got a letter from Rose Bowers she said Grandma was a little Better. She wants me to come home. She does not like to stay at Fronas. I can't go now & do not know whether we ever will go or not. O I wish I could go. Now I want you to write me all the news about the election. I must write to Mr. Morrison & have the paper sent but will wait till we are settled. I must close as ever your Mother Direct to Flagstaff. Kiss Bertha for me and send me her picture. I will send one of Mabels curls."
      They returned to Colorado Springs for Thanksgiving with their daughter, Grace Mason, and were with her at the time of the birth of her daughter, Azeva (later adopted as Marian Dyer). They lived in Colorado Springs until about July 1905, when they visited with their daughter, Mabel Boger, at Burlington, Colorado. A letter written by Annie Frankfather, dated July 1905, probably written just before the visit to Burlington. Several photos were taken at that time. Colorado City, Colo. Direct to Colorado City Colo" [Sounds like they were running a hotel in the Springs.]
      In August 1905, Samuel was called to Lincoln, Nebraska, because of the illness and death of Elizabeth Frankforter, his stepmother and who was also his wife's mother. His wife Annie was unable to make the trip because of her health. That fall, Samuel and wife returned to Roca, where they made their home until her death in 1912. On a postcard postmarked 8 Sep 1908, from Roca, Anna Maria writes, "Darling Mabel, Yours received & noted. I am better but O so weak don't ever think I ever will be well. I am very weak as ever your Mother." There are two postcard photos in the Mabel Boger collection, one probably was sister Grace's. The one from Mabel's album has written on the back in Annie (Gilson's) handwriting, "A view of our sod shanty on the Plain taken from the South East to North west - How do you like it- I have 2 new Lawn Sw--s [swans?] but out of sight not shown in the view. See the Hen house with glass front. I raised about 150 chicks & have plenty of them to Frye more than -- care for am getting tired of chicken & like Bacon much Better." The other card has written in Annie's hand, "This view is taken from the South east to North west showing rear end of house & Henhouse & Shop." Then in Mabel's handwriting, "at Roca, Nebr. Home of S.S. Frankfather."
In an undated letter, Sam wrote to daughter Mabel, "Dear Mabel, Mother rec your letter and I find that your letter has raised quite a disturbance in the family. Now Mabel I think you are well enough acquainted with your mother not to write any Secrets to her. As you are well aware that She is unable to keep a Secret.. Clay don't want to stay on the ranch on account of Some matter you mentioned in your letter you Should have Stated in your letter that they had struck a Soft Snap by coming in here and driving us out of our home for God Sake Mable keep quiet as far as the Snap is concerned there is none here. I have always worked hard but the last past 3 years have been the hardest on me that I have ever experienced and have a good prospect of making my living without Exposing myself to the cold & Stormy weather hoping you will benefit by my advise and Keep quite and don't spoil a good Prospect for us old People. Hoping this will find you both well and happy. Yours &c SS F-----"
On the first of January 1906, Wyatt and Mabel's son Willard died. On the 3rd, Annie wrote to her daughter from Roca, Nebraska, "Darling Mabel, I know you think strange not to heard from me but I have been 2 crippled with Rheumatism in my right hand & especially my thumb. Could not hold a pencil. Just received your dispatch that Willard is dead. O how sorry I am poor little baby little did I think when I came away that it would the last time I would ever see him. Well he will never know the trouble or sorrow of this world He is happy but I know your heart is broke. but he will be one more treasure in heaven. I know how hard it is for you but you have Bertha left and try to console yourself there will come a grand reunion on a Brighter shore. O how I wish I could be with you in your time of trouble but I am not able to come now. I am better with the exception of Rheumatism & my hands better so I can hold a pen & write down I have had a letter from grace she expects to be confined in Feb. & wants to come home I had written you in Dec but did not get any.. A letter from "Aunt Frona" Sophronia (Frankforter) Van Andel, sister to Samuel, November 12, 1912, "Lincoln, Nebr. 1722 R. Street, Dear Mabel- We of [often?] wonder about you and yours and would like to see you. We are all well and enjoying this beautiful fall weather. Mrs. Demaree phoned me a few moments ago and said your father had completely given out and that his mind was giving away. I don't wonder at it. You can't convieve what he has gone through. It is a pitible Case. Something must be done Mrs. Demaree has inquired at different institutions and Tabtha Hospital will take her and take good care of her for One dollar ($1.00) per day. Now I don't feel it my place to do this as you children are willing to take care of your parents. I wrote to Clay and asked him to come at once. Write your father what you would advise him to do. Yours as ever Aunt Frona Nov 12 - 12."
November 14, 1912, Clay Frankfather wrote to Mabel from Lincoln, Nebraska on Van Andel store stationary, "Dear Wyatt & Mable, Will drop you a few lines in Lincoln arrived here at about 3 o'clock only to find that Father & Aunt Rose had brought Mother to the Hospital this morn. and gone back on the train about 2 hrs. before we got here Father said he would go home and get the house cleaned up as Clay might come in a day or two. Aunt Frona said they placed Mother on a cot and put the cot in the baggage car, she stood the trip fine, knew where she was going, and seemed to enjoy the trip, Aunt Frona thinks Father will be all right now that he was just simply worn out and give up. It is just train time so will have to close and mail this. Hope the children are getting along all right now. Good Bye Clay." Then a postcard came from Samuel, "Roca, Neb Dec 19 -12 Time Midnight -1- o'clock Dr Davy just recd a message from Dr Miller at the Tabitha Home Hospital stating that Mother was semi unconscious and unable to swallow had same simptoms earlier but not so serious as at Present. will write you again by tomorrow Eve or Saturday morning will go and see her Saturday will thone? to Hosptial at 8 in the morning? S.S. Frankfather." Then on December 20th, Aunt Frona (Frankforter) Van Andel wrote to Mabel, "Lincoln, Nebr. 1722 R. Street, Dear Mabel & family, Your mother passed away this morning at 11 a.m. She commenced to fail yesterday and her life went out suddenly. Your father came in but too late to see her alive. The nurse said she simply fell asleep. The body will go from here in a hearse Sunday and funeral will be a 2 p.m. Wish you could all be here but I know it is impossible. Your father has made all arrangements and I think they are well arranged. Hope the children are all over the scarlet fever and that you and your family are in good health. Lovingly, Aunt Frona."
      After the death of his wife, Samuel remarried on 25 Sep 1913, to a widow, Laura Gardner. In a letter dated 27 Nov 1913, Aunt Rebecca, widow of Jake Frankforter, writes to Mabel Boger, "...we went out allmost every Sunday all summer long and allways stopped a little bit to see your father. He would allways be sitting alone in the swing & we all felt so sorry for him. He told us that you and Clay had helped him & he said he meant to pay you back as soon as he could of course I don't know if his wife had any means or not but she evidently makes the best of what they have which is the duty of any good wife... a letter from you to your Poor old Father would do him a world of good and if this woman can reform him we should all treat him well. You said he wrote you in Sept that he could not come until he got his pension. And that you heard he has been married on Sept 25th. I said to him that day, "Why don't you wait until you see her so you will know if you like her or not" but he said "its all a lottery anyhow & I do need a housekeeper so bad I am going to risk it." Anyhow so far as fixing the house very much I think its she who does it & Mabelle I really believe he grieves for your Mother. Just the same. I know their lives together were not allway happy but the cause I don't know. I could not censure either one but let us forgive and forget and let the dead past bury it's dead. Let us strew flower for them while they live tis much better than to wait until they are gone. I don't believe your father has drank any since."
Samuel wrote to son Clay and wife Dacy on September 11, 1915 from Roca, Nebraska. This letter was in Mabel's possession so I would assume Clay sent it on to her so she could read it. "Dear Dacy & Family, Your letter of recent date is recd contents noted in reply will Say as usual were very glad to hear from you & that you were all well & prospering but hope you will get pay from the RR Co for your cattle kill? by them and hoping better luck may call on you in the near future & So continue for all time. David was with us over Sunday (last) & Noah & Wife last Thursday Night- they attended the fair at Lincoln. We didn't go to the fair as it is a tiresome task for me to be on my feet all day & my Sight- so bad I couldnt see much anyhow furthermore our finances does not permit us to take in every Show that comes along. My Pension just keeps us in grub & thats all & we are thankful that it makes both ends Meet & that we are indepted to any one for Groceries or other goods of any kind So we don't have anything to complain about only My Health is failing Very fast- & am nearly Blind I can't See just as well in th dark as in the daylight I have my nose within 3 inches of this sheet to see the ruling the weather is Still cloudy with slight rain fall at Short intervals Laura is writing you a little note and is Ever so anxious to See you She wishes So much to See Some of My family as She hasent Seen one y-- Rosa Sends her regards now dont fail to write when you Start for here and Bring Dwight along. So Long Father"
      Samuel and his second wife visited Mabel and Clay in the summer of possibly 1916, and accompanied them with their children on a trip to Colorado Springs and Canon City, where they visited the Husteds, returning home by way of Pueblo, Rocky Ford, Las Animas and Eads, Colorado.
      In December 1916, Laura Gardner Frankfather wrote a thank you note to Mabel Boger, "....your Father has got a bad cold but it is getting better... we was down to Unadilla [NE] for Xmas came home A wenesday had A lovely time we got your box all right & many thanks they are very nice & tell Bertha the towl is just lovely & your Father say tell Mabel that He Slept with His mittens on but I don't think he did but they are [fine?] I got quite a number of presents & so did your Father & He will write to you as soon as his eye get so he can if it ever does. He was in to see Williams & he told your Father He could not fix him glasses till his other eye go blind So He don't know how soon it will be." March 1917, Samuel wrote to Mabel, "Grace left Lincoln 3/22 for I----- & said she would write us as soon as she arrived in Marion Ind.[?] but so far have failed to hear any news from her and imagine what has happened to her the mail has gone south ------ most & do hope to get news of her ges I do wish I could send you a colony of Honey Bees they would certainly relish the Alfalfa. I would like to write you often but it is most impossible for me to write dont look for us to call on you during the --- as we haven't the means to spare Clay & Dacy sent me 30$ to help pay them robus Catholic at the Hospital Our strawberry plants are coming right along fine but many beds are entirely killed by dry & cold weather. Dear Mabel, As Sam is wriing I will ad A few lines it is lovely today & warme but we have had some very cold days but we kept warme & I have pieced 5 quilts since Xmas --- on shares the ---- Mother."
On the 30th of March, 1917, Samuel wrote to Mabel, "Dear Mabel & Wiatt & Kiddies Your letter recd yesterday also Graces day before yesterday. The birthday present (His birthday was Mar 26th) is certainly appreciated & must it is the most S---- --- present ever recd by me as I was out of money & about 12$ debt but will draw my pension on Apil 4th 63$ and perhaps was as our Senator Regsis? at Washington Wired me the latter part of December that my application for an Increase had passed Congress have had no news since that time. My Eye treatment last Oct cost me 60$ and recd no benefit on was robed of what small amount of money I had I can see enough to write by the use of a double magnifying Glass. Haven't heard from Bill Harz for some time in his last letter he said would start for Nebr when the bds [buds?] on the trees started."

In late December or early January 1917, Laura wrote again to Mabel, "….-----

April 14, 1918 Laura wrote again to Mabel, "Unadilla Neb, Dear Daughter, We received your welcome letter & we was glad to know that you was well did Bertha have the measels hard Some had them a round here hard & some very light I am feeling good but I can't walk yet but I can Stand up I am A going to try walking with a cruher do you think I will brake my neck The is if this Month will be 3 Month Since I was hurt it seeema aA long time to set A round & be waited on your Father is just About the same we did think some of coming out to Colo this summer but now we will not come out as I can't get A round good we are at Sadie's now but will go home next Sunday if nothing hapen we come down with Mine? & her Husband she is her on-- oldest Girl Sadie & family is well & Lenard was when the og heard from Him I got A letter 3 weeks Ago from Him He was well & work having A nice time He was going back to the front the day He wrote & wold be gone 10 days There has been some fiting since then don't know wheather it was never him or not. William H. Hartz, husband of Elizabeth (Frankforter) wrote to Mabel Frankfather Boger Jan 18, 1919, from Tobias, Nebraska, "Your Father and Mother are quite Well. I was thare a few days before Xmas."
Sometime before his death, Samuel and his new wife moved to Sterling, Johnson County, Nebraska. Clay Frankfather wrote to his sister, "Sterling, Neb. 2/8 1920 12 noon o'clock, Dear Sister Mabel and Family, I am trying to write in haste. I arrived in Lincoln at 12:20 o'clock and caught a train right out at 12:45 arrived here at 1:30. The youngest brother Carolus was not included in the transactions, perhaps because he was still a minor. Elias lived on the farm all his married life and built a beautiful brick home for Margaret. Anna Maria 'Annie' Gilson1,2 (F)
b. 7 November 1845, d. 20 December 1912, #218
Father*circa 1818George Gilson
Mother*10 October 1827Elizabeth Clunk
Biography* Annie was a dressmaker. Daughter Mabel's personal description states that she was 5' 4", brunette complexion, dark brown eyes and dark brown hair. She weighed 160 pounds but this was probably later in life.
The information printed by Mabel Frankfather Boger in her history prepared in the 1940's was that Elizabeth Clunk, Anna Maria's mother, was married first to her father, JOHN Gilson, in about 1844. It indicates that he was born in Boulogne, France, and died in October 1845, at New Lisbon, OH. This might be the information given to Anna Maria by her mother.
A search of marriage records at the court house turned up the actual entry that states that Elizabeth Clunk married GEORGE Gilson, not John, on 9 Oct 1845, by Isaac Morgan, Justice of the Peace. It was recorded on 6 Jan 1846. These marriages were recorded chronologically and the four previous entries were also for 1845 marriages. There can be no doubt about the date of this marriage.
A search of cemetery records at New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, failed to turn up a grave. A search of courthouse records for Orphan's court records also failed to turn up any proceedings or appointment of a guardian for daughter Anna Maria. There was no probate for George Gilson.
George Gilson did not die at New Lisbon in October 1845, as per family records; that is when they were married. Newspaper records indicate that Elizabeth sued him in January 1849, for "willful absence and gross neglect of duty." In March of 1849, the divorce was granted and she was given $400.00 alimony and custody of Anna Maria. By April 1850, he was remarried and his first child of the second marriage was born. When the census was taken in June of 1850, Elizabeth was at home with her parents in Wyandot County, Ohio, and George was in Mercer County, PA, with his new family.
Mabel Frankfather Boger knew her mother's birth date to be 1845. That is what she had placed on her mother's gravestone and that is what she printed in her history. But her mother's death certificate indicates an 1846 birth. This information was supplied by Anna Maria's husband Samuel. The date listed in the S. S. Frankfather Family Bible is 7 November 1845, in the handwriting of Samuel Frankfather. When she died in December of 1912, if she had been born in 1845, she would have been aged 67, having just had a birthday. This is the age that daughter Mabel listed in the family history. But her obituaries in the Hickman Enterprise and Nebraska State Journal state she was aged 66, same as her death certificate. Census records also support the 1845 birth date. In 1910, she gives her birth date as November 1845. All other birth dates of her family in that census were correct. In 1850, she was four, and in 1870, she was 24, which also support the 1845 birth date. In the 1860 census, she was 16, which would place her birth in 1843, and in 1880, she was 32, which would place the birth in 1847. Only in 1910, was her age stated as 63, which would place her birth in 1846. If she were born in 1845, then her parents were married about a month before her birth. Daughter Grace's delayed birth certificate also lists 1845 for Anna Maria's birth.
Records also do not support George Gilson's French birth. In the 1850 and 1860 censuses, he states he was born in Ohio. In 1870, Anna Maria states her father was of foreign birth. In 1880, she states he was born in Ohio. Two of his children from his second marriage list Ohio and one lists PA. In 1900, Anna Maria lists Ohio and one of his other daughters lists PA. In 1910, Anna Maria lists him as "Fr. French." And in that same year, one of his other daughters lists his birth as OH. Since in two censuses, Anna Maria Gilson lists her father as foreign or French birth, she may have been told that he was born in France. Possibly he was of French descent. Without a doubt, the Gilsons were in Columbiana County, Ohio, by 1806, when George's parents George and Hannah Gilson moved there with their four sons from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where they had been neighbors with the Lesnett's (Elizabeth Clunk's mother's family]. Elizabeth Clunk and George Gilson's grandparents probably knew each other and it is possible their great grandparents arrived in western Pennsylvania together. An early county biography of the Lesnetts indicates that Christian Lisnet came west with Richard Gilson. George Gilson's father was named Richard and is probably this same man.
George Bell Frankforter told Della Boger in 1940 that "Anne" was very beautiful and talented. She had a fine voice and made the most beautiful wax flowers and tinted them. He used to watch her by the hours. When George Bell Frankfather was born, Anna Maria was thirteen years old. She was living in the Frankfather household because her mother married her future husband's father. George was a child of that marriage. George said she was very good in algebra and a professor named Oleney or Alney at the university at Ann Arbor, Michigan, tried to get her to go to school there and he almost had her persuaded when she married Sam Frankfather.
George Bell Frankforter also said that Anna and Sam Frankfather should have gone to New York and gone on the stage because they both had fine voices and were excellent entertainers. Lowell Frankforter, a grandson of David who was a brother of Samuel, remembers Sam and Annie when he was a child. He said they put on shows and entertained them.
About 1898 or 1899, Annie's husband told their oldest daughter, Viva Schwake, that her mother wanted her to have her watch and that he should have brought it along because she never wears it. Later when Viva was visiting her mother, she asked about the watch and her mother said, "It was stolen. Pa always made such a fuss when I went away from home and locked the house so I just quit locking the house and I think that a boy that was working at the livery stable slipped into the house when I was away and got my watch. I intended to give you my watch." At that point, Sam Frankfather walked in and when questioned said, "I don't know, I haven't seen it for months. I suppose it is around here someplace. Maybe it is in the secretary drawer." Anna said, "No, I have looked for it but it is gone."
In the summer of 1910 or 11, Clay and Mabel were called to Roca because of the illness of their mother. Viva was called to Roca from Guthrie, Oklahoma. In November 1912, Clay wrote to his sister Mabel from Lincoln, Nebraska, "We arrived here at about 3 o'clock only to find that Father & Aunt Rose had brought Mother to the Hospital this morn and gone back on the train about 2 hours before we got here. Father said he would go home and get the house cleaned up as Clay might come in a day or two. Aunt Frona said they placed Mother on a cot and put the cot in the baggage car, she stood the trip fine, knew where she was going, and seemed to enjoy the trip, Aunt Frona thinks Father will be all right now that he was just simply worn out and give up. Hope the children are getting along all right now. Good Bye, Clay." In December 1912, Clay went to Roca when their mother died. Mabel was unable to go because her children had scarlet fever. See the biography of Samuel for more information on this and a transcription of several of Annie's letters.
After Anna's death, her husband's new wife, Laura was seen wearing the watch by Eliza "Lide" (Frankforter) Hartz. Viva then wrote her father about the watch. He then sent it to Clay who in turn sent it to Viva. Viva's grandson, Fred Schwake, knows nothing of the watch or where it might be today.
In March of 1950, Mabel wrote, "...my mother had a Majolica milk pitcher. It just seems to me that is had a corn design, and was yellow and green. I am not too sure about it."

Biography* When Grace married Owen Mason, her family disapproved. They had three children and then Owen deserted her. She was unable to care for the children alone and had them placed in the care of a woman. This woman placed the children up for adoption. Grace was very upset by this but by the time she found out, it was too late to get her chidren back. In a letter to Mabel Boger written from Guthrie, Oklahoma, 4 Feb 1904, Viva Schwake writes, "I suppose you know by this time that Gracie is in love with an old man who is to much married Pa feals awful bad about it and is trying to brake up the match. Mable if you have any influence over Grace write her a good kind letter. Maby she will listen to some of us." The Mabel Frankfather Boger Family History gives Cheyenne, WY as the location for the marriage to Owen Mason but another source, a small back notebook lists the marriage as having taken place in Colorado Springs. The record has been located in Cheyenne. Owen Mason was 45, listed his age as 33. Grace was 18 and listed her age as 21.
In a letter dated 27 Feb 1948, Grace's sister Mabel wrote to Dora Kasselbaum about Grace's last illness. "About two years ago, she caught her heal on a floor board in the wood house, and to save herself from falling, she caught hold of a board over her head. In doing this, she tore the blood vessels loose on the right side of her abdomen. A clot formed there, and she was operated upon to remove this clot in October 1946. The incision has never healed on account of her diabetic condition, and has been draining ever since. She was in the hospital there, from Oct. 1946 until about Oct 1947, when they took her home for a short time. But her condition was not so that they could give her the necessary care, so they took her back. She returned home about a month ago, and they had a lady who cared for her, together with Henry's help. The Doctor told Henry recently that this condition had become cancerous and that there was nothing more he could do. It seems this cancer is spreading through her abdomen and that she can never get well."
On 6 Feb 1948, Grace wrote to Mabel, "Henry has his hand full taking care of me and he has ever improved on that. How well I remember those old plates of grandmas! I have a few pieces that mother gave me when Allen was born. Had alsmost forgotten them had them packed in the bottom of my trunk and only got them out a few years ago. I woman here gave me a small chinna closet 4 shelves and it was in terible shape. Henry fixed it all nice and varnished it so them I became interested. Had I been able when this friend of mine passed away she would have gave me so many ol pieces. She was so glad to .. I was interested in those things. -- passed away first then she passed away last summer. I have quite a few ice pieces of cut glass of course, ther eis no age but just beauriful. I often wondered when I lay so sick just what would become of them & my china. Maybe I will still be able to enjoy them.... Do you remember the pretty little pitcher you gave Ana (not Viva-- name starts with an "A") I still begrudge her that for she had to no thot about it. It isn't the value of those things it just if you like them. ... One sure thing we better start to think about. You folks are all older and going straight and Henry and I are down and out, and I am wondering if I will ever come out of this, I got awful discouraged, but if the ---- will do as well as they have done I going to try to forget it all. I need help during the day more but they'll only pay fhe $2.00. $1.00 per hour and I need a practical nurse this is to serious a thing for green hands to undertake and Baily is so helpless she is fine but just doesn't remember a thing, yet they won't go out for any ---. Hous-- they only 65 to 75 ct. an hour. I know this is different. Last week a had a hand? OK."
