Obituary: AFTER MONTHS OF SUFFERING MRS. VAN DORN PASSES AWAY
As the months and years pass on, many of the older residents of Bonaparte are joining the "silent majority." Indeed, during the past two years the Grim Messenger has harvested many in fullness of years from the field of this locality. Of these his latest acquisition was our well-known and many-respected resident, Mrs. Van Dorn. Sarah O. Kane was born in Lincoln Co., Ohio August 3, 1831. She came to Iowa in 1856 and was united in marriage to William Van Dorn July 3, 1857. To this union was born one child, Mary Anna (Mrs. Philip Eich) who with her father and daughter mourn her loss. At an early age she united with the Baptist church at Kukersville, Ohio, of which she remained a member until she united with the Presbyterian church of Bonaparte. She died January 4, 1900, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 1 day. Mrs. Van Dorn was a woman of most excellent Christian character and deeds. She was an active Christian worker and will be greatly missed in the church. Her kindness in times of sickness and trouble has been experienced by many. Her family, the church, and the community have been blessed by her life. During her last sickness she frequently expressed her desire "to go home." Funeral services were conducted at the residence of Mr. Philip Eich, Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 9th, by her pastor, Rev. W. H. Scofield. They were largely attended, and many friends also were present at the interment in the Bonaparte cemetery. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: James Bridge, L. C. Meek, D. W. Riggle, A. McDonald, H. H. Meek and J. H. Cresap. Van Dorn, from the Van Buren Co Web Site, posted from the Entler Scrapbook, Vol. 2, Iowa State Historical Library, Iowa City, IA, by a volunteer, "William Van Dorn was born in Ohio, February 10, 1832, and died at Bonaparte, Iowa, September 5, 1900, aged 68 years, six months and 25 days. He came to Iowa in 1855 and was united in marriage with Sarah O'Kane, July 3, 1857. To this union was born one child, Mary Anna, with whom he resided at the time of his death. His companion died January 4th, 1900. Mr. Van Dorn was among those who moved to Idaho in 1862, remaining there some time. Several years after returning to Bonaparte he engaged in the grain business, and was later a partner of T. H. Hopkins in the boot and shoe business here, retiring from that business about 15 years ago. He was last engaged in the agricultural implement business with his son-in-law, Phil Eich. He had been in poor health for several years past, but his death was not expected so soon. ...The funeral occurred from the residence of Phil Eich, Friday afternoon...", This is the only source that lists the actual marriage date.

Henry O'Kane (M)
b. before 1765, d. 1820, #647
Biography* O'Kane families lived in County Derry and County Antrim in the extreme northeast corner of Ireland. The name there was spelled O'Cahan.
The O'Kane family descended from Irish ancestors and the father of [our] Henry O'Kane was an Irish nobleman. Henry O'Kane edited an Irish paper in Dublin and was obliged to leave Ireland on account of some disloyalty toward the English. (Sketch of Col. W. O'Kane in History of Franklin County, Arkansas, Chicago, Goodspeed Publishing: 1889)
The family has been reported to be of Scots-Irish lineage but the O'Kanes were surely Irish. Possibly Henry O'Kane's wife, Sarah Stevens, who was born in Virginia, was of Scots-Irish lineage.
Henry O'Kane, Senior, left northern Ireland in 1789 at about age 33 and established a home in North Carolina and later moved to Rockingham County, Virginia. He was a man of "considerable prominence in his native country." (Alexander Taylor, Centennial History of Columbus, 1909).
Before moving to Rockingham County, Virginia, he was a resident of Campbell County, Virginia, when in 1793 he married Sarah Stevens. About 1806 he moved his family to Augusta County, Virginia, where they were on the 1810 U. S. Census. In a biography of their son, John O'Kane, it is written that Henry O'Kane taught school and was a gentleman of good, scholarly attainments. The note that he wrote to the county clerk when his daughter Charlotte married shows beautiful penmanship.
They moved to Rockingham County, Virginia, where in 1817, he purchased a ten acre triangular piece of land on Smith's Creek from Christian Miller who had patented it in 1791. After his death in about 1820, his widow and children sold this land to Patrick McManus.

Sarah Stevens (F)
b. circa 1757, d. circa 1854, #648
Biography* Dr. George E. Cottral wrote this biography of Sarah Stevens, "It is believed that Sarah had a fair education for her time, and that she was either a schoolteacher or somehow associated with schools. Since Henry was either a schoolteacher or schoolmaster, that may have been how they met in Campbell County. A short time after their marriage they moved to Rockbridge County; the tax roles show that Henry O'Kane was in that county from 1793 to 1804, probably teaching school. Here their first six children were born. They were in Augusta County from 1804 to 1815. Then they moved to Rockingham County where Henry found employment as a schoolmaster. In 1817, Henry O'Kane purchased a 10 acre plot of land from Christian Miller near Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Virginia. It is not know if the family lived in a house on this land, or rented a house elsewhere. In 1820, husband Henry died and widow Sarah continued to live in the family house with daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth and her four sons. In 1821 Thomas left to marry Ann Bear, in 1823 Henry, Jr. married Barbara Dunlap, in 1824 Rebecca married Thomas Cotrill, and about 1826 John and James left to go to Ohio. Charlotte and husband Joseph already were in Ohio. Sarah and the children who were in the area decied to sell the family plot of land in 1828. Then Sarah and Elizabeth moved in with Rebecca and Thomas in Shenandoah County. In 1829 Henry O'Kane, Jr. and family moved from Virginia to Fairfield County, Ohio. In 1831 Thomas and Rebecca decided to move to Ohio also, and they took Sarah with them. Elizabeth O'Kane remained in Shenandoah County and married James Walker in 1832. Then in 1833 a tragic event occured, Rebeca died. Sarah then moved in with the Henry O'Kane, Jr. family. Henry's wife Barbara died in 1845 and Henry died in 1847. Then Sarah went to Indiana to live with her son John O'Kane's family, and we can find her there in Fayette County in the 1850 census listed as being 93 years old and born in Virginia. No record of her death has been found."

Biography* Wendel Sites was on the 1751 tax list of Strasburg Twp., Lancaster Co., PA as Wendel Syds. He was natualized 11 Sep 1765 in Frederick Co., MD as Wendel Seitz. He moved to Frederick (now Washington) Co., MD between 1753-60, and to Rockingham Co., VA 1777-82.
In Frederick Co. Deed Folio 174, a deed to Vandle Sides from Andrew Slush, for 95 acres called "Pillican" was recorded 4 Sep 1761. Folio 664 says 92 acres called "Pillican", recorded 12 Nov 1763. In History of Western MD by Scharf, is listed land grants prior to the Revolutionary War, "Scant Timber" to Vindal Sights 20 Feb 1766, 5210 acres. Washington Co., MD Deed Liber A Folio 96 Windle Sights sold 141 acres called "Scant of Timber" in the first line of the original Tract called "Philican", and 7 acres called "Vandels Chance" to Frederick Hartle, dated 25 Oct 1777. Wendel's son, Christian, later disposed of all remaining land in 1801.
Wendel appears in the Rockingham Co., VA tax lists from 1782-1785. There are no deed records for Wendel in Rockingham Co., but many of them were destroyed during the Civil War. It is known that he owned land in that county, as there is "mention" in the Minute Books of his children and executors selling the land after his death.
Wendel's recorded will was apparantly destroyed during the Civil War, but the original was found in 1931, in a secret drawer of a cherry chest that his grandson Robert took to Ohio in 1831. "In the name of God Amen I Vandel Sites of the County of Rockingham... unto my beloved wife Hanna Sites... (states provision for her well being and rooms in the plantation house)... and What Legacies is yet due or to become due from the estate of my wifes father Charles Sipes is to be full property of my wife Hannah... third son Peter Sites, eldest son Christian, second son Henry, son in law John Sites, daughters Barbara Sites, Hannah Sites, Catharine Dunlap, son George. 17 Sep 1785 Vandel "X" Sites Rockingham Co. Mother*before 1745Margaret (?)
Biography* In The Lewis Family by J. B. Nearhoof, he writes, "Joseph Lewis' father was an old time school teacher. He lived in Bald Eagle Valley and moved to Indiana Co." He named Joseph's father as Robert, which we know to be incorrect and there is no evidence that he moved to Indiana County. Possibly David's son, Robert, was the schoolteacher. (He appeared on the tax list in Huntingdon County only three years, 1823-25.) David first turns up in the tax list of Franklin Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA in 1790 with his father, Evan, and brothers Samuel and John. He has 2 horses and 2 cows in 1790 and 1791. In 1794 and 1795 he has 100 acres land and 1 horse and 2 cows. In 1796 and 1797, he has 100 acres and 3 cows. In 1798 Warrior's Mark Twp. is formed from Franklin Twp. David is not on that list in 1798 or 1799 but turns up in 1800-05 with no land and 2 cows. In 1806 he has a horse and 3 cows and in 1807 he has only a horse. 1808-13 he has 1 horse and 2 cows. He doesn't appear on the tax list again until 1817-21 when he has 75 acres. In 1822 he has 75 acres and a cow. In 1823-24 he has 60 acres and 1 cow. In 1825 his name is crossed off and does not appear through 1850. His 60 acres is listed in son Joseph's name. No widow is listed. He would have been 60-65 years old at this time and may have died.
Walter D. Lewis' manuscript written in 1930 describes David Lewis, " ... lived some time at Water St, PA, then lived halfway up on the trail over Bald Eagle Mtn. a few miles east of Tyrone, PA. Here was a spring and he built a log cabin and reared his family and must have provided for them mostly by hunting and fishing."

Land", 4 head of horses & 12 head of cattle, and Andrew Christy Jr. as having 4 head of horses and 2 head of cattle.
In 1789, Andrew Christy [probably Jr.] was appointed to work with Overseer of the Road, James Todd, to work on the road from Thomas Frohock's Mill to James Dobbin's Ford on 2nd Creek. Also that same year Andrew Christy proved a deed in court.
27 Nov 1801 (Bk 18 p. 244 or 211?), Andrew Christy (Jr.), no wife signs, lets George Rarey (both of Rowan Co.) have 84 acres on Grant's Creek next to the old corner of [blank] Christy for 50 pounds being part of the patent no. 628 made 10 Oct 1783, which was subdivided, [possibly when Andrew, Sr. died between 1784 & 1790 or was he alive in 1801--see below]. 84 acres is approximately 1/3 of 260 acres indicating that Andrew Sr. may have had three children or two children & a widow who got 1/3. Also on the same date, Andrew Christy (no wife signs) lets Meschack Pinkston (both of Rowan Co) have 76 acres on Grant's Creek next to George Rary (part of the old tract of 260 acres granted to the said [said? didn't he die between 1784 & 1790?] Andrew Christy by the state & now subdivided.)
There is also a deed dated 1790 from Joseph Christy to Thomas Pinkston Bk 12, p. 607.
The 1815 Poll Tax List of Iredell Co, NC, shows Andrew Christy (the third?) in Davidson's company with one poll, and no land. Andrew Christy (Jr.) was taxed for one pole and 251 acres valued at $376.50 in Capt. Huggins Company. Joseph Christy (brother or son of Andrew?) was taxed for one pole and 63 acres valued at $150.00 in Capt. Fall's Company. There were also two James Christys taxed. Each had one pole. One didn't have any land and was in Capt. Fall's district. The other had 418 acres valued at $836.00 in Capt. Davidson's district. One was probably a brother to the senior Andrew and Joseph.
In April 1819, Andrew Jr. was in Monroe Co, IN, and was paid 75 cents as a juror for the March term of the circuit court. Son, "Joseph Cristie" registered an ear mark on 10 Nov 1820, in Monroe Co, IN.
He died in 1822. One informant gives the date of 28 Apr 1822, but this is the date his will was written. In a newspaper article published 24 Apr 1889 in The Republican Progress, Gilbert Neill, a resident of Whitehall and age 77 at that time, stated that he attended the funeral of Andrew Christy and that he was buried on the hill west of town about 1816. We know that date to be 1822. Mr. Neill recalled that it was the first funeral held in Bloomington and that there were only about 4 or 5 families living there then. In 1997, I visited Monroe County. The only cemetery in operation in 1822 west of town on a hill is Rosehill Cemetery. There were many burials there before 1822. We think now that possibly Andrew was buried at Burch Cemetery-- there is some question as to the validity of the stone there that supposedly in 1990 had his name, a date of death of June 1822, and age of 77 years. We know he died before June because the man who made his burial clothing was paid in May. Andrew Christy had a granddaughter named Rosanna Nail who might be related to Mr. Neill.
Kelsa and Murphey made Andrew Christy's coffin at a cost of $2.70. They were paid in November. The burial clothing was provided by Joshua O. Howe at a cost of $5.12 1/2. He was paid May 16, 1822.
The inventory of his estate shows that Andrew had 4 horses, 20 head of cattle and 40 head of hogs. He also had 3 feather beds and bed clothes, 5 chairs, 2 kettles and 2 pot racks, 2 small pots, 3 pair of pot hooks, 1 frying pan, 1 dutch oven, 7 pewter and 7 delph plates, 1 set knives and forks and a set of cups and saucers, 6 tin cups, 1 tin coffee pot and 1 pewter coffee pot, 4 pewter dishes, 2 pair giers, 1 blind hatter, 1/2 of a wagon and britchbands, 1 bucket, 2 pails, 1/2 bushel measure. He had 1 little wheel, 1 shovel plow, 2 weeding hoes, 1 grindstone, 2 chopping axes, 1 mattock, 1 pair double trees, 1 man saddle, 1 silver watch, 1 rifle gun, 1 hand saw, 2 augers, 1 drawing knife, $20.00 due from George Anderson, and some money to be collected in North Carolina, amount unknown. The money was $400.00 in North Carolina Banknotes and when converted, was worth $360.63.
Joseph Christy sued his father's executors in Monroe Circuit court September 1823 over non payment for money due for a few days work. They were also in court in Hendricks County five days in April 1824 and ten days September 1824.
Receipts are in the probate packet in Monroe County for monies received from the estate. Samuel Clark, as guardian for Rosanna Nail, received the full sum of her legacy from her grandfather's estate. David Downs signed for $41.00 for his wife Polly, John Christy signed for $41.00, Joseph Christy signed for $1.00 and $41.00, Susannah Christy signed for $41.00, James Christy signed for $57.00, and Andrew Christy signed for $41.00.

[S2271] Photograph of the cemetery stone of Andrew Christy at the Burch Cemetery, Monroe Co, IN, supplied 6/2001 by Karen Meeker <e-mail address> The photo shows that he is buried right next to his grandson Andrew Christy, son of John and Abigail Christy. Karen writes, "June 1822 Andrew Christy 77 years." 7/2001 Karen writes that Raymond Christy visited Burch cemetery and the stone is blank. Karens states, "He called me to see if my sister-in-law would create Andrew's stone for her own purposes. She is not that kind of person but I asked her how they came to go to that cemetery in first place. As it was 1990 she remembers it was off the beaten path and got lost going there and the reason they went was - they had stopped at Bloomfield library and looked at Christy listings." We do know that Andrew died before Jun 1822, because the man who made the burial clothing was paid May 19th. Since the will was written on the 28th of April, he had to have died between 4-28 and 5-19 of 1822.
