| Biography* | | From History of the Separate Baptist Church by Morgan Scott (Indianapolis: Hollenbeck Press, 1901), "Rev. John Freeman was born in North Carolina; moved to Indiana in the year 1830; settled in Lawrence county, and in 1833 moved to Owen county and settled ten miles west of Bloomington Monroe county; at the age of thirty-four joined Salem Church; a few years later went to preaching, and spent a great portion of his time in the ministy, preaching through several counties in Indiana and as far west as Keithsburg, Ill., on the Mississippi river; he often said when but a little boy it seemed like some one spoke to him, saying: 'You will be a preacher some day.' He said, when God, for Christ's sake, had pardoned his sins, then it was that he felt it his duty to warn sinners to flee from the wrath to come; he was ordained to preach in 1854, and was faithful until death had taken him from labor to reward, the 22d day of March, 1888, age eighty-one. Before his death he said he felt his work was done, and that he had preached that which would stand when time would be no more." |
