My name is Christopher Cox, and my grandmother on my father's side was a
Wingrave. I happen to have a small compilation of the Wingraves of this
line in America. My grandmother told me that her ancestor was the last
heir to the family fortune and so he, Dr. John Wingrave left England
around the early 1800's and moved to the U.S., with his wife Mary, and
their four children Clara, John, William and Sarah. They then moved to
Chicago and little Anne was born as well as Fletcher (my ancestor). He
married Emma Johnson in 1840 and had 2 children (both of these wingraves
are on the SSDI for KS (William and John), their wives are Lena and Hazel,
respectably.

Thomas Joseph Wingrave, , D. D. S. of New Orleans, was born in that city,
July 8, 1879, the son of Thomas R. and Virginia (Preble) Wingrave. The
Wingrave family, of English nationality, grave served 4 years in the United
States navy, and at the expiration of his term of enlistment was a
stationary and marine engineer. Capt. Preble, his father-in-law, was a
soldier during the Civil war. Thomas J. Wingrave is the eldest of 6
children, the others being: Henrietta, Celia, wife of F. Sissung, who is
connected with the Sendker Printing Co., of New Orleans; Katherin, Mary and
Lillian. After having been educated in the public schools, and having
gone through the usual studies in the New Orleans college of dentistry, Dr.
Wingrave graduated from the latter institution in 1907. He then began the
practice of his profession with Dr. Harry Crane, and 2 years afterward
continued on his own account. He is demonstrator of prosthetic dentistry
at Tulane university, ex-president and member of the Louisiana State Dental
Alumni, member of the Louisiana State Dental society, president of the
Odontological society of New Orleans, secretary and treasurer of the alumni
society of the Dental Department of Tulane, which formerly was New Orleans
college of dentistry. Dr. Wingrave married Miss Bertha Schmidt, daughter
of Joseph and Bertha (Metz) Schmidt. They have 2 daughters, Ada Agnes Anna
and Cecilia (deceased).

John Wingrave Landells Obituary
Former professor of pathology Addis Ababa, 1976-94 (b 1911; q Cambridge/The London 1936; OBE), d 3 November 1998. He started off studying classics but switched to medicine, and at medical school was scrum half playing in the interhospitals cup tie. He joined up in 1939 and was sent to France as regimental medial officer. John was mentioned in dispatches for his work during the retreat to Dunkirk where he barely escaped with his life. He also served in north Africa and Italy. On return to civilian life he started his career in morbid anatomy at The London Hospital, becoming lecturer, senior lecturer, and reader. Within two weeks of retirement in 1978, John was appointed to the chair of pathology in the faculty of medicine at the University of Addis Ababa, which had been closed for two years after the revolution. He spent 18 years building up a department from scratch, training staff and technicians, and teaching his students as he had done in London. He arranged scholarships overseas for many of his postgraduate students. One said that he showed students that "pathology was a science to be loved and if done properly could save many lives." He was awarded the OBE "for services to medical education overseas." John always maintained an interest in music and natural history, particularly ornithology. After giving up playing rugby football, he became a licensed referee. He leaves a wife, Norah, and three sons (one a consultant pathologist).

Memories of Old Crosby is the title of a talk given by the late Mr. Robert Samuel Sim (a well-known builder years ago), and it covers the period 1868 to 1916.. . . Thanks however, to a number of far-seeing men in the parish, notably Messrs. Thos. Kelly, John Wingrave, Robert Curphey and others, the present prosperous Rechabite Tent was built up on the ruins of the old Club and there is no danger of it sharing the same fate, for it is written "Thus said the Lord, God of Hosts, the God of Israel, Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever." A very prominent member of the old Club was Colonel Johnson, who lived, I think, in No. 3 Crosby Terace and was a very tall gentleman. . .

Joseph Wingrave -
This is the only Coventry based commercial photographer from the nineteenth century that took photographs of the city outside his studio. This is an amazing fact considering how many were doing so in the first twenty years of the twentieth century. Most of his photographs date from 1860s and 1870s.
