from Bill Phillips
"have passed your e-mail to several other people in the village of Wingrave who are actively interested in its history.
I am told that "Wingrave" is spelt "Wingrove" in some of the old documents. It can be read as the grove (ie woodlands or forest) of Wing;  Wing being a village about 5 miles from Wingrave itself
."

From Ken & Margaret Morley's book on the Enclosures called "The Great Upheaval" a  map by Jeffreys dated 1777 which names the present village of Wingrave as "Wingrove"

Wingrave Parish Council -
http://members.aol.com/Wingrave2000/parishcouncil/contents.html

Ken & Margaret Morley are currently writing a history of Wingrave. They showed me a map by Jeffreys dated 1777 which names the village as "Wingrove" and a pen drawing by William Page of a local cottage labelled "Wingrove" which appears in their book on the Enclosures called "The Great Upheaval". The Morleys have also published a pamphlet on the Parish Council called "Grass Roots Democracy in Action".

As part of the Millennium celebrations a committee has been set up to
compile a book that will reflect all aspects of [Wingrave] village life at the end of
the 20th Century. This will be on sale towards the end of this year but the
price is not yet fixed (less than £20 ?). I will be publishing details of
all these publications on my web page. [ November 1999]

Joseph Wingrave - On Site

This is the only Coventry based commercial photographer from the nineteenth century that took photographs of the city outside his studio. This is an amazing fact considering how many were doing so in the first twenty years of the twentieth century. Most of his photographs date from 1860s and 1870s.

Wing, or WENGE as it was previously spelt, relates to Wenge Lodge.
The seat of Wingrave is an adjacent parish to Wing. It's Patron is Earl
Brownlow
. Wing Park belonged to the DORMERS, passed to the Earl of
CHESTERFIELD
and was bought by Lord OVERSTONE; Patron is Lord Overstone.

The Dormers & Throckmortons were Roman Catholics and suffered greatly at
the hands of the State. Sir Robert Dormer, three times High Sheriff for the
counties of Bucks and Bedford, obtained a grant in fee to himself and his
wife of the Manor of Wenge (Wing). The Manor of Wing is now the current
site of Ascott, the Rothschild home now owned by the National Trust. See
Bucks FHS magazine for December 1997 Pages 184/5.
