    The Papermaking Wingrove Family  1650 - 1999

Papermaking has been the family trade since at least 1784. All family members male & female were engaged in the trade throughout each successive generation, until the late 1960's early 1970's, when the UK papermaking industry went into decline, with production being replaced by cheaper imports. I do have one distant cousin, John Wingrove who is still a papermaker working at a mill near Bradninch in Devon, otherwise the present generation are pursuing careers outside the Paper Industry.

I have been intrigued by the two lists of names in the family bible since a small child and often wondered who they were, what they were like etc. I have been asking questions within the family for a number of years and noted what was said. I realized upon the deaths of my Grandmother and my father a year later that a lot of family history was going to be lost forever. Like most things it was another 10 years before I started researching, spending a number of years going up blind alleys. It was the advent of the Internet that started my research in earnest and the rest is history. I have to thank  Michael Wingrove, Stu Hadfield and Susan Miller for their vital contributions and without whose help I would not have made the progress I have. All details you are about to read have been checked from Parish Records, Birth, Death & Marriage certificates, Census Records (UK) and IGI records (UK) My research is still ongoing with new facts appearing from time to time. I do have further information about brothers/sisters and their families from Richard Wingrove (b.1793) onwards and will furnish details upon request.

G/G/G/Grandfather Richard Wingrove born 25th May 1793 - Papermaker, married Sarah Gibson (born about 1797 in Wooburn) on 13 June 1816 in Wooburn Bucks and then moved to Horton in Buckinghamshire, where his eldest son Samuel Wingrove was born in 1816. Samuel was christened on 3 November 1816 in Colnbrook near Wooburn. There was a move to Bledlow in Buckinghamshire about 7 miles NW of High Wycombe, after the birth of his second son Henry in 1818, John b.1821, William b.1823 and Sarah b.1826. It is believed that following the birth in 1826 Sarah died, Richard possibly left his children with relatives, then went to work in the northern part of County Durham, another papermaking district.

About 2/3 years after the death of his wife Sarah, Richard re-married in Gateshead on 25th July 1829 to Margaret Parker (b.14 November 1802 in Lanchester Co Durham) and a further three children were born. It is known from birth records of his children from his second marriage that he was working in the north of County Durham, (Lanchester 1832 - Medomsley 1835). He is recorded in the 1841 census as living and working in Scotswood near East Denton Northumberland, also sons Samuel & Henry are also recorded living with their families in Scotswood during this census.

It is not known for definite at present how the family fared but indications reveal that they prospered and were well-to-do. There are present-day buildings, roads, schools & areas all bearing the Wingrove name, in Newcastle and around the Tyne & Wear district, that bear credence that the family prospered. At some time before 1850, Richard, his wife, daughter Mary Ann (Mary Ann's Marriage) and youngest son Jacob, converted to the Mormon faith (See Sunderland Ward Histories) and emigrated to America in 1851, his wife Margaret following in 1854, after this nothing is known.

All the men were Papermakers; Samuel moved south arriving in Dartford Kent
in 1851 and is recorded in the census, Samuel moved to Godalming near
Guildford Surrey about 1866 where he died in September 1884. William his
brother moved to Richmond in Yorkshire, then he also arrived in Dartford
Kent about 1855/6, William remained in Dartford until his death in 1888.

The remaining children, Henry - John & Sarah moved to Richmond in Yorkshire
and then split up for a short period, coming back together again in Aston
Warwickshire where Henry & John remained until their deaths, Henry 1887 and
John 1894. Sarah died in Great Horwood Buckinghamshire on 26 May 1908
aged 83, it is assumed that after the death of her brother John, she went
to live with relatives.
