Mouse Tricks...
   from Sandy Sep 2005

Some of you may already know these little gimmicks.....

Just by chance discovered this little trick...
Pick a word in a sentence...Now
left Click twice......that word should highlight...
Now hold down SHIFT and keep moving on to next word and so forth ... you can select a group of words...
OR
Double-click= Selects a word
Triple-click= Selects a paragraph or: put mouse pointer on the first word in a paragraph...Hold down Ctrl and left click...
The whole paragraph should highlight.....
To zoom in on type.........
Ctrl + Mouse wheel
Use it when you want to zoom in and out of what is showing on the screen...eg. an email that was sent in teenie type....

Ctrl + A = Selects all the contents of a page
Ctrl + C = Copy selected text...(like the triple-click)
Ctrl + X = Cut selected text
Ctrl + P = Paste the selected text

Here is one I could have used when my computer froze and
I couldn't access the Start Menu to shut down computer:
CTRL+ESC=Opens the Start menu

This is one I use all the time...but you have to be absolutely sure you want to delete a particular item/picture....etc.
SHIFT+DELETE= Deletes selection immediately, without it hitting the Recycle Bin....

[1] The most common source of broken links on the Internet is from people who have changed service provider. Their email accounts are no longer valid Email addresses.

Solution
....Use an Email account offered free from many sources that is yours for life - either yours or the companies.
Make sure that the company has a forward to option that will send the Email to your present mail account- POP3.
This way your queries will always reach you, no matter what server you have !

Some but not all, offering this service for free and for life.

...Send others that you've found to be reliable!

[2]   I would like to post my genealogy information
but my service  provider charges too much
for a Web  page or limits it to a small size.

Again there are many places that will allow you to set up for free at their sites. The services offered here vary greatly and change as they try to attract more members. Ask around for stable providers of free space.

(a) Make sure that you back up all your files
that you upload to the site
      - some suffer unrecoverable crashes
         and everything is lost.

(b) Find a site that offers ftp/transfer rather than
single file uploads  to ease the strain of loading all
the htmls of a GEDCOM file.

(c) These places come and go
      - so make sure that you have back-ups
         on your hard drive.

(d) Some genealogy software programs
      offer free web hosting.
Make sure that the companies are not using
your work to sell to others in CD promotions or
charging visitor  to view your information.

(e) Check the privacy policy at a prospective web site
       - will they sell your personal information
         or your email address ?

Rootsweb owned by Ancestry.com

will host your site for free.
       *  Unlimited  size
       *  A simple method of posting your Gedcom

WINGROVE WORLD WIDE
is still searching for the PERFECT web host !

Many sites do not stand the test of time. Make sure that you have backups of any created sites on your own hard drive.

http://www.fortunecity.com 100Mb
Also a new site at
http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/
and more countries added monthly
http://www.tripod.com 11Mb
        *genealogy pod
Now http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
www.geocities.com 11mb
     Now part of Yahoo

Read the rules and contracts carefully In some cases you give up the copyright to your work, as well as your right to privacy.

I can guide you through the process of setting up a site or sign a contract with you to set it up and or maintain the site.
So far my work has been free setting up WINGROVE sites.

I've tried search engines and find very little. Why?

................
All search engines are not created equal.
Some have links that may be three or four months out of date.
Most search engines are struggling to find more efficient way of
handling submissions and weeding out dead links.
Don't stay just with the big boys there are many, many others. Other sites offer multiple search engines that will give you the results from as many as ten other search engines. These multiple or meta search engines increase in number each day.
......
Try "genealogy + your surname " in the search field.

I'm using a software program for my research, but it doesn't make files that can be loaded to the internet.

.
Look around on the Internet at a variety of sites.
Find a Family Tree file that has been converted into internet files.
There is almost always a link back to the person who
made the program to convert the GED files.
Many of these are free or nearly free.
The free version may not give you all the bells and whistles, but hey how many times will you use it? Registration is usually low

Programs are also available to remove personal
information from living persons in your trees.

I'm lucky if I understand my computer genealogy program.  How would I ever figure out how to set up a site for my information?

Here again the answer can often be found on the Net.
There are a multitude of people who will set up your site. The prices vary greatly - don't even think of using any of these until you know what you want and what you need. Again surf to genealogy sites to find out what is beneficial to you, what things do you like, make a wish list.

Its not an impossible task to put together a basic site except for the total computer illiterate. The net provides many services for free, you just have to find them. Graphics are also free.
Ask a site  owner how they set up their site.
Word of mouth is often the best form of advertisement and assurance of a well done site.
Post a query here.

[6]  When searching through sites a referring link
doesn't work!  Many return with a
404 error.

The most common reason for these errors is that the person has moved the site or the company site is no longer in business. Sometimes the reason is a mistake in the link URL  that you might be able to get around.
an example URL is
www.genealogy.com/~husker/gorby/phil/larry.HTML
[Try 1 ] in the address bar - try changing the HTML to
                                                lowercase
[Try 2 ] try instead using larry.htm or larry.HTM
[Try 3 ] erase the complete larry.HTML and reloading
[Try 4] erase the phil/larry.HTML and try
[Try ! ] continue erasing and reloading until you get back
                                                                  to just the server.
Changing the URL as shown above has allowed me to find an entry into sites that have been re-organized, or that have entered an incorrect URL in the first place.

HAPPY 99.exe VIRUS
You should know that this virus or worm spreads itself without the user knowing they are spreading a virus. The one lucky thing is that this virus does little that spread itself - it does not harm the hard drive.

When you run the Happy99.exe file a window pops up on the screen and displays what looks like fireworks - it also spread on emails as well as posts to usenet newsgroups postings.

It keeps an address book in the Windows system file folder called LISTE.SKA so that it only sends the Happy99.exe once to each address. You can open this file with notepad and see who sent you the virus [I didn't find this file-but it arrived at the same time as your email under the same address and time] Make sure that they don't email you again with a thank you as you can re-infect your machine.

REMOVAL [Norton Anti-Virus will detect and clean]

1. Click START button then SHUTDOWN and 'Restart Computer in MS-DOS Mode" then click Yes
2. At the DOS prompt type CD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
    [hit enter]

3. Type DEL SKA.EXE [hit enter]
            DEL SKA.DLL [hit enter]

4. Then type ATTRIB -R WSOCK32.DLL [hit enter]
COPY WSOCK32.SKA WSOCK32.DLL [hit enter]
Answer YES if it ask if you want to overwrite WSOCK32.DLL

5. Optional DEL WSOCK32.SKA [Hit enter]
BUT ONLY IF YOU WERE ABLE TO COMPLETE STEP 4

6. TYPE EXIT to return to WINDOWS

Delete WINDOWS Registry Key (if it exists )
Click START then RUN then type regedit in the box
then click OK
Double-Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE then Microsoft then WINDOWS then CURRENTVERSION  under RunONCE check for SKA.EXE and select it if it's there.
PRESS DELETE and then click YES
Close Regedit
DON'T MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES to the REGISTRY -unless you backed it up!

Then you should be safe to notify others that you may have sent the virus.  Send these removal instructions

Although this virus has been removed from the Top Ten, another New Year celebration may recreate the threat
