He was b. 23 Oct 1796, Chapmanslade, Corsley Parish,
Wiltshire, England, married at Corsley, Wiltshire; d. 14 Oct 1864, Hanover, ON;
is buried at St. George's Cemetery, Hanover. His parents were
Philip
Hunt and Elizabeth Barens; he married Sarah Fricker (Frick,
Frickor, Fricke), b. ca. 1800, Somerset England; d. ca. Aug 1875, perhaps at
Alpena, MI.
Sarah and Thomas arrived in Canada in 1830, having
sailed 7 Apr 1830 from Newport, Glamorganshire, England. Thomas was a day
laborer. The family's passage was sponsored by parish officers who
encouraged a number of poor families to emigrate to get them off the
welfare rolls, settle in Canada, and report back to the parish on living
conditions there. Sarah and Thomas and four daughters emigrated; their
fifth daughter was b. at sea, near the St. Lawrence River, before
their arrival at Hamilton, ON.
Several letters written by Thomas in 1832, reporting to
the parish in England, can be found at the Hamilton, ON, Public Library.
The family eventually settled in Grey County, near
Durham Ontario.
There were 10 children, the eldest of whom, Eliza Hunt,
was my great-great-grandmother.
