Last rites were held this afternoon
at the Wachterhauser funeral home for Mrs. Susie Matthews,
widow of John O Matthews, a pioneer of Alpena. The Rev. James
W Lees officiated. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
Mrs. Matthews came here as Susie
Wingrove in
the very early days of Alpena, as a nurse in an Alpena family where
she lived for several years prior to her marriage to Mr. Matthews
who was a lumberman. Like most women of that era she spent some time
in the lumber camps and then lived on a farm. A gentlewoman in every
way, she came from a family that had an excellent background. Some
of her sisters were teachers and artists. Kindly, gracious lady
always, she was the last one of the family.
Mr. Matthews died in 1928. At one time their home was at the corner
of Third and Campbell.
When living in the country Mrs.
Matthews was a valued correspondent from her neighborhood for the
News. According to the best available record she was born in 1858 in
Canada. The old Wingrove
home was at
the corner of Fifth and Saginaw.
Surviving are a nephew, Tom
Manning, Alpena and a niece, Mrs Berrymore of Royal Oak.
