JOHN WINGROVE JR.

John Jr., spent many years of his life farming at Glen Jean, obtaining his education in the New York State and Raleigh County West Virginia. He taught school in Fayette County West Virginia for several years. His chief vocation was farming.

He died in the year of 1897 and is buried at Breneman Cemetery near Oak Hill.

John and 7 of his brothers were in Confederate army. [William and Benjamin served for the Union: William with the Iowa - Company K, 5th Iowa Infantry, and Benjamin served first with the A 1 Iowa Calvary, then with Kansas in the A 10 Kansas Infantry (Linda Wingrove Dreibelbis] [More] and while one brother died in the service, all the others reached a good old age. He was in the Army for 4 years and then married Martha A. Breneman who was born at Oak Hill and attended school there and was interested as a member and worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Martha died in 1900 and rests beside John.

ARCHER  A  WINGROVE, physician and surgeon, has made himself a most esteemed member of his profession in the Scarbro community of Fayette County, -where he has had a widely extended practice and has gained affiliations with the substantial interests of the community in a business and civic way.

Doctor Wingrove was born at Leblong, now Glen Jean, West Virginia, January 1, 1877. His grandfather, John Wingrove Sr., came to America from Ireland in 1819, and after living in New York State for some years located in Raleigh County, West Virginia, taking up land and becoming one of the pioneer farmers, and also utilized part of his farm in hunting. In Raleigh County today is a school house known as the Wingrove School, which was named for this pioneer. Later he bought land at Leblong, now en Jean and lived there until his death in 1865, being buried in the cemetery at Leblong. John Wingrove, Jr., father of Doctor Wingrove, was born in Ireland and was six years of age when his parents came to America. He spent many years of his life as a farmer at Glen Jean, having obtained his education in New York State and in Raleigh County. He taught school in Fayette County for several years, but his chief vocation was farming. He died in 1897 and is buried in the Breneman Cemetery near Oak Hill (WV). He and seven of his brothers were in the Confederate army, and while one brother died in the service all the others reached good old age. John Wingrove was in the army four years. He married Martha A. Breneman, who was born at Oak Hill, attended school there and was a much interested member and worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She died in 1900 and rests beside. her husband. Of their six children two died in infancy. One daughter, Mary, was a teacher for several years and married L. F. Hale, by whom she had a daughter, Mrs. Garnet Hale Lee. J. E. Wingrove, unmarried, is connected with the State Highway Department. Doctor Archer is next in age, and the youngest is Doctor A. C. Wingrove, a dentist at Cle Elum, Washington, and, is 'married and has one child.

Doctor Archer A. Wingrove obtained his early 'education in public schools in Fayette County, attended Barboursville College, now the Morris Harvey College, and was graduated from Maryland Medical-College at Baltimore in 1905, and also attended the University of Louisville. Scarbro is the community in Fayette County which he chose as the scene of his professional work, and he has been a most faithful and competent physician and . . .

ARCHER A. WINGROVE

Archer was a doctor and obtained his early education in the public schools in the Fayette County of West Virginia. He also attended Barboursville College, now Morris Harvey College and graduated from Maryland Medical College in Baltimore in 1905 and attended the University of Louisville. He choose Scarbro and the community in Fayette County for his professional work. He was faithful and competent physician and surgeon there. He was also a stockholder in Oak Hill National Bank, owning subsidiary of New River Company. He was a member of the County West Virginia State and American Medical Association officiated with Knights of Pyrthias and Independent Order of Odd Fellows and an independent Republican in politics.

He married on October 10, 1905 to Mary A. Miles who was reared and educated in West Virginia and worked at Summersville State Normal and taught several years at Fayette County until her marriage and then her interests were at home. She was a daughter of Abraham Miles, who for many years farmed at Scarbro and then in 1918, went to Florida and bought an Orange Grove and spent his last years and died in 1923. His 2nd wife was Mattie Huddleston and died in 1926. They were Methodist Episcopal Church South.

They were born in Loundon County Virginia and when 5 years of age was bound out by the overseer of the poor and John was given to a slaveholder by the name of George Jenny. It's unknown what happened to Nancy. Elizabeth the mother stayed in England

John C. Wingrove offered, to go to the War of 1812 in the year of 1814, but his wife would not allow him to do so.

This John Wingrove is from England and is a cousin of the other Wingroves. A Harold Newman from West Virginia says he thinks he's a distant cousin to us [Irish Wingroves] as they settled in the North and West Central West Virginia area of the Upshur and Marshall County.
