Wingrove, Wingrave or Thurgood
Here is my huge leap of faith; the conclusion that this Wingrave
or Wingrove
family changed their surname to Thurgood in Sydney
about 1881 and that conclusion needs some background.
I'd
dearly love to hear from anyone who can make a connection to any of
this, either before 1861 or after 1880.

This appears to be the end
of the story for the Wingrave in Australia, and so far I have not
found any trace of them returning to UK.
On the
other hand, the Thurgood family appears in Sydney
in 1882.
So,
starting from the present and working backwards we have two branches
of a Thurgood family living on the North Coast of NSW who have been
searching their antecedents since 1980 with limited success.
The
only information available to them was the names of their
grandfathers, two brothers, Charles & Arthur Thurgood.
Anecdotally, they were two of 6 children whose parents drowned in a
horse-driven vehicle accident, the younger ones being taken into
care and the family broke up and lost touch. Arthur Thurgood also
drowned in 1918 when his eldest child was 8yrs. Charles was an
introspective personality and his family gleaned little of his
history other than that he had been taken into care as a child. He
died in 1960
Extensive searches finally revealed that the family consisted of:
Alfred
George Thurgood aka George Thurgood, b. England abt 1842, d. 1886
Sydney accidentally drowned in horse & cart accident
Sarah
Thurgood, nee McLoud/McLeod, b. Belfast abt 1847, various
recordings as Sarah Thirgood, d. (killed) 1889 Sydney
Their
children:
Alfrinda Thurgood aka Amy, Alfrinda Amy, b.Dublin Ireland, calc DoB
1869 from all NSW certs. M1 1895, M2 1918, d. 1935 (Dau. b1883, no
trace)
William Francis Thurgood claims Dob 29 May 1873, Hounslow (Perhaps
Hunslet?) M.1900, d.1953, Railway Employment Record 1901
Alfred George Thurgood - mother's DC indicates DoB abt 1872
- possibly the Alfred George Thurgood who joined the Victorian Boer
War contingent.
Charles Thurgood - age given on mother's DC indicates DoB abt
1881, No BC found. (New search of Child
Protection records as 'Charles Wingrave' pending)
Walter aka Arthur Thurgood b. 1884 - BC. Child
Protection 1889-1902
Sydney & Violet Thurgood (twins) b. 1882 - BC. Violet
d.1883. Sydney in Child Protection 1889-1900
Sarah's DC names the above children as 'living, 3 females
deceased'. The deceased girls are possibly Violet Thurgood,
(the twin) d.1883, Minnie Wingrave d.1879 and the stillborn
'unnamed' Wingrave, d.1877
No
prior trace can be found of this lineage anywhere in Aust or UK.
We are unable to find their arrival in Australia or make a
connection between this family and the many Thurgood families in the
UK.
While
the ages and names stated are not absolutely exactly matching, on
the balance of probabilities I believe the two families are the
same.
I
think that Charles Wingrave, b.1880 became known as Charles
Thurgood before 1882 and now plan to check whether a CP Record
exists for him in that name.
I would be glad to hear from anyone on these
conclusions.
