Obituary Ruth C (Callahan) Sowden
RUTH C SOWDEN, aged 84 years of Second Street, Mather, died Thursday, July 13, 1995 in Patrician Nursing Home, North Royalton, Ohio.
She was born May 22, 1911, in Virginia, a daughter of Thomas and Mae Callahan.
Mrs. Sowden attended Jefferson High School. She has resided in Mather since 1923. Mrs. Sowden was a homemaker and was a clerk at the Mather Store. She was a member of Mather Christian Church.
Her husband, James (Bud) Sowden, died May 26, 1949. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Peggy) Whoolery of Solon Ohio, and Mrs. Lydia McMannes of Garfield Heights, Ohio; a son James Sowden of Cleveland Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Lula Mull of West Mifflin; and two brothers, Vaughn Callahan of Harrisonville and Alfred Callahan of Parma, Ohio.
Deceased are two stepsons, Jack Sowden and Robert Sowden, four sisters, Margaret Denny, Anna Crayne, Wahilla Twohig and Minnie Parrish; and three brothers, Thomas, Clinton and Edward Callahan

SOWDEN, ALLEN C; of Waterford formerly of Pontiac; January 8, 1997 at 85 years of age; beloved husband of the late Dorothy Sowden; dear father of Nancy (the late Richard Dando of Waterford, and Edwin A Sowden of MI; dear brother of William Sowden of PA; also survived by eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Sowden loved to play golf and work crossword puzzles. He and Dorothy came to Michigan in 1946 after having worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania as a boy for 20 years. He was employed at Pontiac Motors and retired in 1972. Funeral service Saturday, January 11, 1997 at 10 a.m. at Coats Funeral Home, Watford, Rev. Richard C Nelson officiating. Interment following at Perry Mt Park Cemetery, Pontiac.

Prominent District Soccer Player is Killed in Mine
MATHER, May 26 [1949]- James (Bud) Sowden, 42, a motorman at the Mather mine and widely known as a soccer player, was killed instantly in an accident in the mine about 8:30 am today.
Coroner Charles Haines reported that the motor Sowden was driving jumped the track and struck a supporting lumber. The jolt is thought to have thrown Sowden from the locomotive, after which the machine or a car passed over him. He was killed instantly. Sowden was one of six brothers all prominent in district soccer circles. Besides having played for Mather, he has also played for other teams in Southwestern Pennsylvania at various times and for White Plains NY, in the New York State League. In this district he played for Fairhope in the Mon --- League, for Lincoln Hill and Mather in the County League and for Avella in the Keystone League.
James William Sowden, a son of James and Lydia Sowden, born Aug 1 , 1906 at Vesta No 1. On Sept 26, 1929 he married Ruth Callahan, who survives. His home was at 241 Second Street, Mather He resided for the last 24 years in Mather and was employed in the mine. He was a member of U M W A Local No 6151 and of the Mather Christian Church.
Surviving besides his wife are his parents, 5 children Jack, Peggy, James and Lydia all at home and Robert Sowden of Greensboro and grandchild; five brothers, Kie and Charles - both of Greensboro, Allen Sowden, Pontiac MI; David Sowden, Jefferson and William Sowden, Mather and two sisters, Mrs. Ray Dunham and Mrs. Holmes Townsend, both of Mather.

CUYAHOGA FALLS - Rosetta Townsend, 85, passed away December 29, 2001. Mrs. Townsend was born in Fairhope PA and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1964 moving there from Mather PA. She had managed Fir Hill Towers Apartments with her husband Holmes, retiring in 1974. She was a member of First Church, A United Methodist Congregation. She loved her family and was an avid sports fan, especially following the Steelers and Indians.
Preceded in death by her husband of 69 years on December 16 and by her sister and seven brothers, she is survived by her children, Eleanor (George) Lynn of Cuyahoga Falls, Carol (John) Parsons of New Kensington PA, Lois (James) Elliott of North Olmstead Ohio, and Roy (Louann) Townsend of Springfield Twp. 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and an expectant great great grandchild. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial service will be conducted at 2 pm Wednesday in the First Church, A United Methodist Congregation, 245 Portage Trail , Cuyahoga Falls Ohio 44221; Rev Paul Beal officiating. CUYAHOGA FALLS - Holmes L Townsend Sr,. 88 , passed away at his residence December 16, 2001. Mr. Townsend was born in McClellandtown, PA and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1964 moving here from Mather PA. He has worked as a coal miner for the United Mine Worker for 30 years and later managed the Fir Hill Towers Apartments, retiring in 1974. He was a member of First Church - A United Methodist Congregation, enjoyed reading and was a devoted family man.
He is survived by his wide of 69 years, Rosetta; children, Eleanor (George) Lynn of Cuyahoga Falls, Carol (John) Parsons of New Kensington PA, Lois (James) Elliott of North Olmstead Ohio, and Roy (Louann) Townsend of Springfield Twp. 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and an expectant great great grandchild. There will be no calling hours. JAMES F DANDO
Service for James F Dando, 70, of 66 E. Princeton will be 11 a.m. Monday at Voorbees-Siple Chapel, with burial in Perry Mount Park Cemetery.
Mr. Dando, a retired weight inspector for Fisher Body Division, died yesterday. He has served the division 35 years. He was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife Emma T; two sons James E of Rochester and Richard C of Waterford Township; and two daughters, Mrs. Thelma V Preston and Mrs. Juanita E. Strong, both of Waterford Township.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Esther Larson of Pontiac.
