The
Spikin family have been traced to St Clement Dane, Middlesex now part
of London, England. The name Spikin has also been found in
Hagworthingham, Lincolnshire, England. The father of the family was
one Thomas Spikin, born about 1570, married Susan …………., in
about 1591 they had 12 children christened between 1591 to 1622 at
Hagworthingham. Also a Elizabeth Spikin was christened 6 January 1820
at St Mary’s, South Kelso, Lincolnshire, her parents were one Thomas
Spikin and Sussana ……… It would be interesting to know if the
Spikin Family moved from Lincolnshire to London.
The
Christian name Thomas would seem to be a traditional Spikin name, my
earliest Spikin name being one Charles Thomas Spikin, who was born in
1800, we have not been able to trace his birth place or marriage to
Elizabeth Wingrove which we believe took place about 1820, he was a
barristers clerk and lived in the Strand area.

At
the time of the 1841 census they lived at 1 Crown Place in St Clement
Dane’s parish, Middlesex, England. The Royal Air force now uses the
church. Both Charles Thomas and Elizabeth Wingrove ages were give as
40 years in the 1841 census and their burials were recorded in the
parish records as Elizabeth Spikin buried 14th of June 1846
aged 46 years and Charles Thomas Spikin buried 5th
September 1848 aged 48 years. It is interesting to note that great
grand father Henry Robert Spikin was not born when the 1841 census was
taken, but in the 1851 census he was living with his oldest brother
William at 10 Vere Street St Clement Dane, both his parents died
between 1841 and 1851 census.
