I have pretty well hit a dead-end on tracing back on my
McDonald family.
But here is some of the information I have:
There are two Jonas McDonald in the family tree.
One is the son of George McDonald of Waterford, Ontario and on the 1881
Census he was 20 years old and living with his parents George and Sarah McDonald.
There is a record of marriage to a Sarah Jaques of Middleton,, 16 Dec 1885 in Delhi,. In the same release from Norfolk Historical Society it was recorded that George
McDonald died the 22 of October 1898 in Waterford.
The children of George and Sarah McDonald were:
Alice McDonald married to David B. Hendershot
Children: Annie Hendershot;
Erie Hendershot;
Maggie Hendershot;
Elgin Hendershot;
Roy Hendershot;
Fred Hendershot
1881 Census: Windham, Norfolk North, Ontario

Corlis.

Charlie Corlis
Margaret McDonald married to Fred W. Hayward
Children: Lloyd Hayward
Calvin McDonald married to Agnes Kellum
Children:

Russell McDonald
1881 Census: Middleton, Norfolk North, Ontario
George O. McDonald married to Ida West
David Nelles Garfield McDonald
(Born May 9, 1884 Waterford)
Margaret McDonald
(Born 01/27/1888 Waterford)
Margaret was known as Maggie,
she was raised by her Aunt Margaret (McDonald)
Hayward,
and later married a Harris and
died in Los Angeles on
10/19/1949
She had two children Jay and
Ian both deceased in California.
Jonas McDonald married to Sarah Jaques
Children:
Charles;
Delbert;
Ethel;
and at least 2 other children
Charles M. McDonald married to Annie Bloomfield
Children:
One child who died very early in infancy.
George McDonald Sr. married to Sarah Broughton
is believed to have been born about 1818.
However census of 1891 shows he was
age 70 years old born in Ontario,
and his father was also born in Ontario.
This would indicate that the family might have been in
Ontario around 1790's.
Sarah states she was 65 years old and born Ontario, but her father was US born.
The family origin is Scotch.
1881 Census: Townsend, Norfolk

The clipping from Simcoe Reformer of 3 Nov 1898 indicates
George McDonald Sr. died in Waterford in his 79th year.
The records of the Townsend Township Part
2, of County Farmers directory
shows the following:
Calvin McDonald of Waterford tenant at 8 3
Chas McDonald of Wilsonville tenant at 2 3
George McDonald Sr. Wilsonville tenant 2 3
Jonas McDonald farmer Wilsonville 7 8
George O. McDonald Wilsonville. tenant 2 3
The following items are from my father David Nelles McDonald written in his 80th year:
"George McDonald Sr. of Waterford, Ontario, in the County of Norfolk reported have owned at one time One Hundred Acres of
land, somewhere in where the city of London, Ontario now stands.
George McDonald had one brother , whom I knew.
His name was Jonas McDonald, and his wife's name was Julia.
Jonas owned a small farm near Langton Ontario, which now located in the heart of the tobacco belt. Roughly seven miles from Delhi. Jonas had two
sons, about any other of the family I do not know, one sons name was John, he farmed near
Langton ON. The other sons name was Will or William, occupation not known.
There must have another brother because a John McDonald, school teacher and later graduated as a Doctor of Medicine came to
visit my grandparents at Waterford."

Jonas came to Alberta circa 1905 and took out a homestead in the area east of Three Hills, Alberta. My father
David Nelles McDonald and his uncle Charles M. McDonald took out homesteads at the same time.
In the census of 1861 we have found the following:

This information was supplied by the Norfolk Historical Society May 18, 2002. We wonder if they may be some connection
on the above, it may be possible that Alexander and Jonas were brothers.
This is all the information I have, and would certainly like to find more about our family, but the records of the particular time are
difficult to find. If you can make any sense of the above maybe something will come out of it. Please let me know if there might be
some connection between your Jonas McDonald and the one that appears here.
