The Irwin Heritage
by Lillie M. Fair
( from Information furnished by Lewis John and Richard L. Irwin)
The Irwin name is traced in Celtic Lore back to 407 A. D. in France and to practically the same time in Old
Scotland. Before Christianity spread to Europe, the Irwins were of the leading families of Southern Europe. In those days,
the leading families spelled their name with the sign Runic of their God before the family name. The leading God of
the people was THOR. so the name Irwin was anciently spelled or pronounced Thuir Wyne. After Christianity came
into Europe, the Irwins dropped the sign of the name of their ancient God. The name became Urwyne or Irwyne -
(Place of the wine press).
James Irwin came from north Ireland in 1730 and died in 1778. He was born of North Ireland - Scotch descent. He
came to this country with his wife, several children and two of his brothers. He first settled in lower end of the Cumberland Valley, in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and blacksmith.
Archibald Irwin, third son of James Irwin, was born in northern (Old) Ireland. He emigrated from Scotland
1727-1730, due to bad economy in Scotland. He died in 1788, leaving a widow and nine children. He served in the
Continental Army as a Quarter Master Officer, an Ensign, and later Major.
Priestley Irwin, a grandson of Archibald Irwin, was born January 4, 1798. He first married Susan
Oiler, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. His second wife was Sarah, born in Germany and spoke only German. He had numerous
children.
Marcus Fayette Irwin was born February 17, 1829, the son of Priestly and Sarah Irwin. His wife was Mary
Elizabeth (Hewitt), the daughter of Nicholes and Elizabeth (Gerhart) Hewitt. Mary Elizabeth's parents lived in
Hagerstown, Maryland and moved to Runtington County, Pennsylvania.
Marcus F. and Mary E. Irwin's children were:
1 - John H. Irwin,
2 - Jennings Oldham Irwin,
3 - Marion Marcus Irwin,
4 - Martha Jane (Irwin) Fogle,
4- Fayette Irwin,
5- Sadie (Irwin) Hilliard,
and
6- Grant Chambers Irwin.
Marcus F. and Mary E. Irwin left Pennsylvania and moved to near Pueblo, Colorado. They left Colorado, came to
Meeker, and lived on son Grant's farm, in a small house. Marcus F. arose the morning of December 20, 1910 and built the fire. His wife went out to milk the cows, and
when she returned to the house Marcus F. had died peacefully. Marcus F. is buried in the Now Hope Cemetery,
Meeker, Oklahoma. Mary E. left Meeker after Marcus's death. She moved to Oregon to live with her daughter,
Martha Jane (Irwin) Fogle Mary E. died April 20, 1919, and is buried in Oregon.
Grant Chambers Irwin was born July 12, 1864, the son of Marcus Fayette and Mary Elizabeth (Hewitt) Irwin, in
Pennsylvania. He left Pennsylvania in about 1887. He arrived in Helena, Montana that fall, found work and spent
the winter there. The following spring he went to Vancouver Washington, where Sadie, and her husband, Jim Hilliard, lived. Grant
Chambers worked in Seattle, Washington, until 1893. The year of 1893, Grant attended the World Fair in Chicago.
After taking in the fair, he came to Oklahoma, near Meeker, to visit his sister, Martha Jane, and her husband,
Adam Fogle. He evidently came prepared to stay for a while, as he brought all his savings, along with his luggage.
John Wesley Augustine, born in Alumberry County, Ohio, and raised in Illinois, had migrated to near Yates Center,
Kansas, made the run in opening of Sac and Fox territory. He homesteaded on the Southeast Quarter 13-12-4,
four miles east of Meeker. The Augustines had a 16-year-old adopted daughter, Einora Cecile, born in 1877, in
Yates Center, Kansas. Her parents had died during the flu epidemic of 1880. In March 18, 1894, Elnora Cecile married Grant Chambers Irwin, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, by Reverend Ayers,
United Brethren Minister. He bought the 160 acre farm, east of the Augustines, and they made their first home.
Grant and Cecile had eleven children:
1- Arlie Augustine Irwin, born May 17, 1895, died 1961,
married Nellie Lane,
had one daughter, Mabel Lowmaster, born December 28, 1916;
2- Hilliard Grant Irwin, born March 9, 1897,
served with the 88th Company 162 Dep. Battalion, World War 1, and
died of influenza November 1, 1918, at Camp Pike,
Little Rock, Arkansas;
3- Gladys Elnora, born October 10, 1899, died June 5, 1972,
married Arthur W. Miller, had three children, Helen, Lloyd and Charlotte;
4- Glen Marcus was born October 20, 1902, died 1970,
married Geraldine Wassack, and had one son, Glen Dale Irwin;
5- George Washington Irwin, born February 22, 1906, died 1960,
married Hazel Downen, and had four children,
Virginia Mae, George W., Jr., Dorothy, and Judith;
6- Lewis John was born March 13, 1908 and
married Eunice M. Buttram, September 21, 1934.
They had three children:
Billie Jeanne, born December 4, 1938,
John Lewis, born 1940 and
Bobbie Joe, born 1942;
7- Marion Franklin Irwin, born July 7, 1910,
married Gladys Marie Buttram and had one daughter, Marian Marie;
8- Ernest Leslie, born July 17, 1912, died 1984, and
married Bertie Evelyn Neer, September 1, 1934.
They had four children
Herbert Grant,
born September 30, 1936,
Richard L., born January 15, 1941,
H. Susan, born July 15, 1952, and
Stephen Pat, born
July 2, 1947;
9- Bessie Elizabeth, born July 21, 1914,
married Harold Marsh
and had three children Michael E.,
Nancy
10- Woodrow Irwin born August 30, 1917 and died as an infant,
September 26, 1917; and
11- Dorothy Evelyn, born December 17, 1920,
and married Charley Helms.
They had two children - Linda Kay and Gordon.
Grant owned and operated cotton gins in Meeker. Grant lost his arm in a cotton gin accident. The Irwins were not
farmers. They were of the business world - electricians, owners of industries and construction companies. They
were good managers in their businesses. They were always ready to help those less fortunate.
Grant Chambers Irwin died May 9, 1934 and Elnora Cecile (Augustine) Irwin died February 27, 1952. Both were
buried in New Hope Cemetery, Meeker, Oklahoma.
The only living children of Grant and Cecile are Bessie Marsh of Dallas, Texas and Dorothy Helms of California.
They have several grandchildren living in the Meeker area.

The Grant Chambers Irwin Story
By Lewis John Irwin
Grant Chambers Irwin, sister Martha Jane (Aunt Jenny), Adam Fogle, his son, Newton Fogle, by a former marriage,
and their three children, Jennings, Lula Jane and George, left Pennsylvania in two of those "covered Conestoga
wagons." Their destination was Vancouver, Washington, a distance of nearly 3000 miles.
Exact date of departure, I can only presume, was about the first day of May, 1887. 1 say this because a fourth
baby was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, a girl named Rosy Mabel, on May 28, 1887.
They made it to Helena, Montana and the men found work in timber with the horses, renting a house for the winter.
The following spring they went on to Vancouver, Washington, where Grant and Jane's sister, Sadie, lived with her
husband, Jim Hilliard.
It seems almost impossible to believe, but the Ozark Trail, which they followed, came across present Lincoln
County, by the farm which Grant later bought in 1894. The trail came through north side of present site of
Meeker, Old Clifton and on through present Oklahoma City, where tall prairie grass grew before.
The Fogles were blessed with another baby, Jenny Fogle, born April 28, 1889, in Seattle, Washington. She died
while a young child after they returned to Lincoln County, near Belmont, and was buried in Gable Cemetery.
In a narration, Lula Jane (Fogle) McGuffey wrote, she said her father had a sawmill near Yakima, Washington. It
caught fire and was damaged. He sold the remains and headed back to Oklahoma. They stopped to visit her
grandparents, Marcus Fayette and Mary Elizabeth Irwin, on a ranch near Pueblo, Colorado. I do not know when
they had moved from Pennsylvania.
Adam Fogle was a sooner, among sooners. On his way from Oklahoma City to Belmont, he chose the site for his
future homestead, four miles east and one mile south of the present site of Meeker.
They stayed near Belmont until the day of Opening, September 22, 1891.
Grant Irwin and Newt Fogle continued to work in Seattle, Washington for a while. Newt later came to Oklahoma in
time for Sac and Fox run in September of 1891. Newt also homesteaded in Lincoln County, near his father.
Grant Irwin pulled stakes and took off for World Fair in Chicago, in 1893. After taking in the fair, he headed for
Oklahoma to visit Adam and sister, Jenny, and family. He evidently came prepared to stay for a while, for other than his luggage, he had all his savings in gold coins in a
money belt.
J. W. Augustine, born and raised in Illinois, had migrated to near Yates Center, Kansas, made the run in opening of
Sac and Fox territory, and homesteaded on the Southeast Quarter of. 13-12-4, four miles east of Meeker, and
just one mile north of the Fogles. They became acquainted and visited quite often. The Augustines had a
16-year-old daughter. The time was 1893. The following spring, in 1894, she was married to Grant Irwin. He bought
the 160 acre farm across the section line, east of Augustines where they made their first home there.
In the mean time another brother, Marion Marcus Irwin, had made the trip from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma, settled
in the same neighborhood and had married Ella Berry, the daughter of another couple who homesteaded just east
of the Fogles.
Grant Irwin had acquired a sawmill and sawed much of the lumber for houses and barns in the neighborhood.
Adam Fogle owned a cotton gin and a gristmill. Neither he nor Grant Irwin cared too much for farming. They
were more interested in machinery and the processing of the products of the other farmers.
Grant and Marion Irwin worked on Rock Island Railroad, being built from Oklahoma City to Shawnee. The
Irwins, Grant, Cecille and six weeks old son, Arlie, made the trip to Shawnee to see the first train come into Shawnee on
the Fourth of July, 1895.
Marion Marcus Irwin died just two years later in 1897, of typhoid fever, and is buried in Gable Cemetery.
Grant Irwin's first gin was destroyed by fire. He built another on the Charley White farm, and operated it there
until 1903. When the Santa Fe Railroad was built, the gin was removed along with the sawmill to present site of
Meeker. At that time, wood was still being used to generate steam, to operate both gin and sawmill.
Grant had moved to the Frazier farm three miles east of Meeker some time before, and his parents moved to live
on his farm. Grant walked the three miles to Meeker for three seasons during cotton-ginning time. He worked about 12 hours
per day and then walked home. He arrived early in time for firing the boiler to have steam pressure when crew
arrived to start ginning by 7:00 a.m.
In 1906, he built a two room house near the gin in Meeker, and moved into it about Thanksgiving.
I, Lewis John, was the first of their children born in Meeker, on March 13, 1908, the first five having been born on
farm four miles east.
In 1909, Oklahoma Natural Gas Company piped natural gas to Meeker. The two rooms were too small and a
contractor from Shawnee was hired to move the two rooms to present site 118 South Scott Street. To these two
rooms, the present house was constructed. Natural gas changed many things that year. The present house was
piped for gas and gas lights were installed. A new gas heating stove was placed in the living room, but a large
wood heater was placed in the dining room, in the center of house. We depended on the wood heater for main
heating of house in cold weather, as they had in the past. Cooking changed from wood to gas.
That year, 1909, a new and larger gin was built and Will Amis was taken in as a partner. I imagine more capital
was needed, for a 150 horsepower natural gas engine was bought to power the new larger gin. In fact, the two
gins, old and new, were placed under same roof and for two or three years during rush season, both sets of gins
stands were pulled by new 150 horsepower gas engine.
Amis and Irwin Gin Company prospered until about 1921 when the price of lint cotton
dropped from around forty cents per pound to five cents per pound.
During rush season, the gin was kept operating until 11:00 to 12:00 P.M. Kerosene lanterns were the only means
of light. The globes had to be cleaned daily and lanterns refilled with kerosene. At that time, we called it coal oil,
made from coal until oil was discovered. Wicks had to be trimmed and replaced
often. Lanterns were also a fire hazard near cotton.
About 1918, a small direct current generator was bought and installed and the gin was wired for electric lights. A
great improvement over the old kerosene Lanterns. much more light and less danger of fire.
In 1918, so many men had been drafted into service during first world war, Father could not find men to operate
gin. I was ten years old at that time. He came to school house one morning and told the principal he was going to
take me out of school to help at the gin.
I was surprised, but happy to get a vacation from school. It certainly helped my ego to be considered capable of
doing the work formerly performed by an older person. I also felt I was doing a small bit toward wining a war.
Those electric lights and the generator that produced the electricity fascinated me, and I had to learn more about
it. I enroll in a correspondent course in electricity from Cooke Electric Correspondence School, in
Chicago. From then on, I was the electrician for the gin. The only thing ever needing attention was a dirty commutator or worn
brushes on generator and burned out lamp globes.
Our older brother, Hilliard G. was drafted into service, and sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, for basic
training. He became ill with influenza, which was raging throughout the country, at that time, First of October, 1918 within 30
days, he was dead. Thousands died that year of the epidemic. Just ten days after Hilliard's death, Armistice was
signed and the war ended November 11, 1918
In the year 1925, the residents of Meeker voted bonds to build 13,000 volt line to connect to line
running from Harrah general station to Chandler. An electrician by the name of Slaymaker came to Meeker. He was looking for a
helper to do wiring to get homes and businesses ready for coming electricity. He and I made a deal, and I stayed
out of school 1925-1926 term, and together we wired some 50 homes and business buildings for electricity.
In spring of 1926, the line was completed and the town of Meeker began receiving electricity, generated at
Oklahoma Gas and Electric plant at Harrah. I went back to school in the fall of 1926, and finished a year later than
my classmates, in spring 1927.

=========================
Grant, along with his sister Jane and her husband, Adam Fogle, migrated from Pennsylvania to Oregon via
Conestoga wagon in the early 1880s. They left Pennsylvania early in the spring and had made it to
the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains when the snow came. They spent the winter there, resumed their
journey the following spring and reached Oregon the next fall. There are still a number of relatives
living in Oregon, as well as Washington and California.
Hilliard was also born at Grandpa's old farm four miles east of Meeker. George and all of
the other younger kids were all born at the old house in town (it was not built until after Meeker was
established in 1903). He first built the gin and then the house. Also Hilliard died of the flue in the
flue epidemic in World War I at Camp Pike, Arkansas.
I don't remember the exact date, but I know the war was just about over, so I think he died about October,
or perhaps early November, 1918. [Glen Irwin]
