Marcus Barrett is the brother of my great great grandfather, Lysander Barrett

     He was b. 8 Sep 1805, Montgomery, MA
            died: 23 Nov 1899, Assumption, IL ; 
     married in Buckhannon, WV 11 Oct 1826; to Nancy Peebles; 
           Nancy b. Pelham, MA 25 Jun 1809; 
                    d Assumption, IL 24 Mar 1894; 
                        d/o Patrick and Jenny (Gray) Peebles. 
                             Who were also parents of
                                  - Maria Peebles w/o Harrison Wingrove 
                                  - Sarah Peebles 2⁰ w/o Elisha Dow Barrett 

Marcus was ten years old when he accompanied his parents to West Virginia. After his marriage to Nancy Peebles, they lived in West Virginia until 1840 when they moved to the Loop, Indiana Co., PA. Marcus was involved in the sale of land in the Loop area.  He kept a general store and made guns, violins and in fact "everything that people needed."

In 1856 Marcus and his son, Byron, went to Tecusa (now Assumption, IL) and bought a general store and some real estate. Leaving Byron in charge Marcus returned to Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1857 he moved his family to Illinois. Like other members of his family Marcus was aware of the need for organized church life. He was instrumental in starting the first Presbyterian church in Tecusa, in fact the church met in his home until a church structure could be built.
So far only one letter written by Marcus has been located. In that one he tells Lysander (his brother) about his golden wedding party and mentions some of the gifts he received such as the gold-headed cane, gold coin, a gold pencil and numerous other presents. "I really came to the conclusion that my children thought good of me besides lots of outside friends."

Marcus had a picture taken with the gold-headed cane. Several descendants remember the picture but no one has been able to locate it.

Lila Pitzer, a granddaughter of Marcus, still remembers him as a kind and loving man. Lena Smith remember her Mother telling how her Grandmother Nancy would fuss at the grandchildren when they came to visit on Sunday because they were making noise while Grandfather Marcus would say "But Nancy, they are only children."
He loved to have his children and grandchildren around him.
