Front Row Ruby Lacey, Reta, Winnie, Mollie and RuthFamily lore in an article by Helen Lacey Russell on the Lacey Family states that the Lacey name is derived from great grandmother Lacey who was famous for her fancy lace. She made lace for Queen Victoria and Mrs. (Mary Ann) Benjamin Disraeli.
Great grandmother Lacey was born at Lacey Green, a place so named after a home was built in this location by the Lacey family. The Village lies along the top of a ridge in the Chiltern Hills, about forty miles north-west of London, above the main Princes Risborough to High Wycombe road.
Upon the death of his mother Henry Lacey at the age of ten sought ways to earn a living. While working with a shepherd at Hughendon Park, Mrs Disraeli noticed his frail condition and took him in with kindness . Frederick ran away and after working in several places happened on his aunt Hannah (Sanders). He was a young man by then and met and married Clara Saunders. They lived in several places, Coaker, Maple Durham, Ibstone and finally settled at Beacon Farm in Marlow. They had a family of nine children with Fred Lacey being the eldest. There were three male children who died as infants. The others surviving children were Jim, Clara, Nell, Ruth and Mary. Frederick Lacey was to die at the age of 74 in Goring. He was a religious man who would not tolerate swearing, card games or alcoholic beverages in his home. Clara Saunders Lacey was born at Handy Cross in High Wycombe Buck England and lived also until the age of 74. She died at Bisham Great Marlow and was buried in the Bisham churchyard. The youngest daughter of this family Mary died at Qu'Appelle Saskatchewan at the age of 92 years.
Fred Lacey, the eldest child, born at Handy Cross in 1875, made his first trip to Canada in 1906. He had dated Rose Catherine Wingrove in England and the two were eventually married in Winlaw Manitoba Canada in 1910
