Lelia Doris Wingrove, 43, died of a heart attack Monday,
Aug 14 at her home in North Branford, Conn. She was born June
19, 1957 to Ida and Flip Wingrove in Spokane, Wash., and
attended kindergarten through high school on Mercer Island, graduating in 1975. A ballet student at Cornish School in Seattle from age 7 to 19, she received a dance scholarship to
San Francisco Ballet summer school at age 13. She attended dance camp at Fort Worden for four summers when Centrum
sponsored the First Chamber Dance Company of New York to teach the five-week summer dance program. During her last year in Seattle she was an apprentice with the First Chamber Dance Company.
Ms. Wingrove moved to New York to pursue her dance career and packed a lot into her too-short life. She danced in New
York City and Boston, made two European tours with the Lotte Goslar Dancers, was principal dancer with the Dinosaur Dance Company, and taught dance at New Haven Ballet and Yale University.
After her marriage to Ed McIntire in 1988 and the birth of her
son, Travis, she threw her energy and flair into the creation of Wingrove
Antiques. She specialized in textiles and had recently returned from a buying trip to France. She loved to travel and was delighted to mix business and pleasure. Ms. Wingrove attended the Unitarian Church of New Haven, Conn. and through the church, volunteered at the Columbia House Soup Kitchen.
Ms. Wingrove was predeceased by her brother, Mark
Wingrove, in 1989.
Survivors include her son, Travis Wingrove
McIntire, North Branford, Conn.; her parents, Flip and Ida
Wingrove, Port Townsend, Wash.; her sisters:
Elizabeth Wingrove, Ann Arbor, Mich., and
Suzanne Wingrove-Haugland, Gales Ferry, Conn.
A memorial service was held in New Haven on Aug. 23. The
Lelia Wingrove Memorial Fund was been established to promote education, research and awareness of heart disease in peri- and post-menopausal women.
