Bertha Helen (Wingrove)
McDonald
Bertha Helen McDonald was born at
Kenwood, Iowa, February 15, 1906, the daughter of Nelson and Dora
Thompson Wingrove. The family moved to a farm near Buck Grove where
Bertha received her education in the rural schools. Following her
schooling she worked at home helping care for her siblings.
On February 15, 1933, Bertha was united
in marriage with Carl F. McDonald at Blair, Neb. Their union was
blessed with one daughter, Alice. They made their home on a farm
southwest of Dow City later moving to Dow City where Carl built the first
locker and operated a variety store. They returned to the farm before
making Dow City their home in 1963. Through the years Bertha was a
farmwife, a clerk in the local grocery store and was a waitress in the
local cafe.
In her spare time Bertha enjoyed her membership in neighborhood women's
club, doing craftwork, flower and vegetable gardening and playing cards.
She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Carl died March 11, 1983 and Bertha continued to reside in Dow City where
she enjoyed her membership in the United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.
In 1996 Bertha moved to Manilla where she resided until moving to the
Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap in 1998. Since April of 2000
Bertha had resided at the Denison Care Center in Denison where her death
occurred Friday afternoon, July 2, 2004. At the time of her death she had
been blessed with 98 years, 4 months and 17 days.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, Paul,
Herbert, Jack, Linn, Nelson "Dick" and Earl
Wingrove and two sisters, Calista Christensen and Dorothy
Noah.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include her daughter, Alice
and husband, Ray Boeck of Manilla; two granddaughters and their
husbands, Mary Lou and Jim Lueth and Shelley and Allen
Foster of Manilla; 8 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson;
one sister, Ella Mae Spahn of the Denison Care Center, nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at the
United Methodist Church in Dow City with the Rev. Judy Deweber
officiating. Music for the service was provided by soloist, Trish Lahndorf
singing "On Eagles Wings," "In The Garden" and
"Boundless Love" with Jeanette Kuhlman serving as organist.
Pallbearers included Cory Lueth, Nathan Lueth, Jeremy Misselhorn, Jerry
McDonald, Bryce Cross and Ronald Spahn. Interment was at the
Dow City Cemetery in Dow City. Following the interment the family invited
everyone to a luncheon at the Russell Brasel Memorial Hall prepared and
served by the Dow City United Methodist Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral
Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
