 USX barge worker killed on Mon River

A Dunbar man was killed early Wednesday as he worked on a barge at the USX works in Clairton.

Ralph Wingrove, 39, of Dunbar RD1 died when he was struck by a loose cable sling as he and two other workers were helping to move a coal barge at the coke plant. Cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

Wingrove, a 19-year employee at the plant, was one of three bargemen moving one barge out from under a coal unloader to position another barge in place at 1:15 a.m.

The victim was at the north end of the barge when a cable sling came loose from the barge timberhead and struck him.

Wingrove, who was wearing a life vest, was knocked into the river and removed by his fellow workers. He was administered CPR as he was being transported to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m.
