HAYES -- Louise Golladay Thomas, 91, passed away Feb. 15, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Gastonia, N.C. She had made her home in Hayes for 22 years. She was born in 1909 in Buckingham County, Va., daughter of the late
George Carrington and Mary Elizabeth Golladay. She was the wife of the late
Merritt W. Thomas for 60 years. She made a home for her family in Raleigh, Durham, and Winston-Salem, N.C.; Charleston and Mount Pleasant, S.C.; Norfolk and Virginia Beach. She was an Avon representative for 40 years with territories in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Hayes. She was a member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merritt
W Thomas; two sisters,
Lavinia Golladay Thomas of Scottsville, Va., Elizabeth Golladay Sprague of Charlottesville, Va.; and a brother,
George Carrington Golladay Jr. of Scottsville; two sisters-in-law,
Virginia Thomas Clendenin and Jane Thomas Wingrove; two brothers-in-law,
Edwin Walker Thomas and Alfred Carter Clendenin, all of Hayes.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Mary Leigh and John Adkin Crain of Gastonia, N.C.,
Susan Thomas Lemley of Virginia Beach; a son and daughter-in-law, Merritt W.
``Woody'' and Nora Jeane Thomas of Gloucester; two sisters, Mattie Leigh G.
Willkie, Eloise G. McKenry of Scottsville; a brother, Howard O. Golladay and wife,
Marne, of San Diego, Calif.; brother-in-law, Ralph L. Wingrove of Hayes; four granddaughters,
Karen Crain Roper, Kim Crain of Gastonia, Vicki Lemley of Virginia Beach and
Kristi Thomas of Farmville, Va.; five grandsons, Matt Crain and wife,
Lynn, of Cherryville, N.C., Scott Crain of Gastonia, Chris, Doug and
Dennis Lemley of Virginia Beach; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; cousins,
Henry, Martha and Virginia Walker; and two special caregivers,
Carolyn Jenkins of Hayes; and granddaughter, Karen Crain Roper
of Gastonia.
A graveside service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gloucester Point Cemetery by the Rev.
Rudolph Tucker. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Pallbearers will be her grandsons,
John Matthew and Scott Thomas Crain, Christopher Allen and
Douglas Michael Lemley.
