CLIFTON D. CUNNINGHAM

The Rev. Clifton D. Cunningham, 82, of Gaithersburg, MD, died May 25 at Wilson Health Care Center of Asbury Village in Gaithersburg.

He was born in Pleasants County to the late Clark Herber and Hattie D. Fleming Cunningham. He was a 1932 Williamstown High School graduate and attended Mountain State Business College. He received his undergraduate degree from Marietta College and received his Master of Theology degree from Westminister Theological Seminary in Westminister, MD.

He worked at the Fifth Street Diner during the early 1930's and was ordained in the West Virginia Methodist Conference and served from 1942-1949 at the Palestine, Lubeck, Fairview and Cedar Grove charges.

He retired in 1979 from the Maryland Methodist Conference after 30 years. Upon retiring from full-time ministry, he was visitation and  assistant pastor at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church, Washington, D.C.

He was a resident of Greenbelt, MD, before retiring to Asbury Village, Gaithersburg, in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Smith Cunningham, whom he married in 1939; one son, Michael Cunningham of Greenbelt, MD; three sisters, Wanda Carpenter of Waverly, Opal Wingrove of Belpre and Anna Marie Henrie of Belleville; three grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Paul Cunningham in 1974.

His body was donated to Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Memorial services were held May 28 at Mowatt Memorial United Methodist Church in Greenbelt.
