Civil War Veteran Was 102 Years Old
Charles Wingrove, 102 year old Civil War veteran, died Wednesday at Winter Veteran Hospital in Topeka where he had made his home in recent years.
Mr. Wingrove will be honored with military burial at the National Cemetery at Fort Leavenworth. The time had not been set this morning.
An active patriot and prominent member of the GAR Mr. Wingrove marched with Sheridan in the Union Army and was present when Gen. Robert Lee gave up his sword and surrendered.
Born Jan. 6, 1846, in West Virginia, he served as a private in the Army from March 10, 1864, until June 30, 1865. He later operated an ox drawn freight service from Kansas city to Denver on the Santa Fe Trail. Mr. Wingrove established a clothing store and tailor shop in Clay Center in the early days and also operated a farm near here. He had operated the store for nearly 80 years when he retired and entered the Veterans hospital at Wichita. Later he moved to the hospital at Topeka. He was the oldest veteran at Winter.
Mr. Wingrove was the oldest member of the Presbyterian church here and was also active in the Masonic lodge before he left Clay Center.
He leaves his wife of Topeka; a daughter, Mrs. Nels K. Nelson, Topeka; another daughter, Mrs. Ada Malcolm, Lincoln, Nebraska.; three sons, Roy of Olympia, Wash.; Walter of Tacoma; and Claude of Tucumcari, N. Mex. Ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren also survive.

Store Formerly Operated in Clay Center by Charles Wingrove.
TOPEKA, Oct 6 (UP) Charles Wingrove, Civil war veteran, died today three months short of his 103rd birth anniversary.
Death came at Winter Veterans hospital to the Union soldier who saw the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. Operator of a clothing store at Clay Center almost until the age of 100, Wingrove had been a patient here for two years.
