DATE: February 11, 1999 AREA:
USA - WV, PA

My family moved northwest to Harrison County, VA later to be WV, into
an area which became Lewis County. This move was made first by William
Wingrove, the
apparent eldest son of John Wingrove Senior. The date was circa 1813-14. This information
I gleaned from the tax lists. William married the second time to a Lanham in Lewis County.
This marriage is documented - Nov 2, 1816, Harrison Co. which later becomes
part of Lewis Co
Some of William Wingrove's family through his son
Harrison Wingrove remained in the Lewis
County, Upshur County areas of WV. John Wingrove Senior and others in the family moved
into Ohio County near Wheeling WV. John was born in England about 1745 or later. He came
here to the US in 1775 and landed in Loudon County, VA, This is on the Chesapeake Bay
area. John Wingrove appears in the church records first in 1775. These were also the tax
records since the Anglican Church was the state religion in VA. In the pension file of
John Senior, James Wingrove my great uncle had written a letter asking when his
grandfather come from England in 1773 or 1775. The pension board responded 1775 and this
corresponds with the records in London which I researched when I was there.
I do think that the date of birth of John senior is in question. In those times old
age was a reason to be proud so people would add on to their age. He was a teenager or
young man when he came here in 1775, at the age of twenty he would be born in the 1750's.
He did not marry until about 1792 or there about. Mariah Blue and John were
probably married in Lewis County, VA now WV. There is a marriage record for him and
Elizabeth Lunn or Lum. Later he married a Maria Huldfish .There was a Hulfish family in
the same area. About 1814 he moved to Harrison Co VA now Lewis County WV to follow his
oldest son William Wingrove. John Wingrove fought in the American Revolution.
Part of my old John's family moved into Fayette County WV and were joined by the other
Wingroves who were from Ireland and had come through the state of New York as evidenced in
the census records The children are listed as having been born in the State of NY, but it
says that the father at least was born in Ireland.
The list of children of John Wingrove must have been collected in the early 1920's when
the third generation was still alive and knew something of the family history. In
Leesville, Loudon County, VA there is a folio of notes in the Tavenner Library which list
the marriage of one of John's daughter to a Costello and there are some other notes which
back up the material given to me by an elderly cousin and granddaughter of the youngest
son, David Hazelton Wingrove who was the brother of my great grandfather
James Wingrove
and Uncle to my grandfather also named David Hazelton
Wingrove. I often wonder if
there is a David Hazelton perhaps on the mother's side of old John from England. It
appears all over the family.
We, here in Fayette County, PA, are familiar with both James
Wingrove and David Hazelton Wingrove
who were
sons of John the immigrant.
In my line of Wingroves
there is a John Wingrove Junior who was the twin of
Nancy Wingrove. They were born about
1800 but were taken from their father since he was too poor to support them. They were
given to a childless couple, but the father died the next year and at some time the mother
had to give up John Jr. He was apprenticed to someone in the Loudon County, VA area. He
next shows up in Indiana County PA .Nobody knows what happened to Nancy.
John Junior's story is written in the History of Indiana County, PA. It even tells that he
was taken by a Mr Janey a slave trader. There are Janeys in Loudon County at the time.

Incidentally, The Haz and Margaret
[Hull Beales] Wingrove in Preston County in 1880, are my
grandfather and his elderly first wife. The dates are a bit off, but it is
him. I have him in 1860 with his parents James
Wingrove and Jane Clark Wingrove in Springfield Twp, Fayette County, PA not far from where I live.
According to tax records James dies in 1867 and Jane married Phillip Stubbles in 1869. They took the two youngest children with them
Joseph and Aggie. The rest of the family moved in with their brother
John Clark Wingrove [James & Jane's oldest son]
and are listed with him in.
My grandfather and his wife are separated in 1900 and both are living in Dunbar Twp. My grandfather living
in the town of Vanderbilt where I grew up and where my uncle Joseph Victor
Wingrove was born. My mother [Iva May Wingrove] often pointed out the house, and her uncle
James Wingrove lived just two houses away.
In 1910 my grandparents were living in Bullskin Twp at a village called Crossroads. Shortly after that they bought a farm in the mountainous area
of Bullskin. So now I know where my grandfather was from his birth until 1910.
Now the Harrison Wingrove born 26 Oct 1813 of Lewis county
was the son of William and Elizabeth Wooster
Wingrove. She must have died in childbirth. Her father was Sebastian
Wooster.
