WINGROVE HISTORY >
USA > West Virginia
The Wingrove presence in West Virginia and Virginia dates from the late 1700's, which of course predates the origins of this state, which was formed during the Civil War era.
There appears to be two separate lineages, both were located in present day Fayette County.
IRISH ROOTSJohn 'William' Wingrove entered the USA, via New York state and part of the family moved into VA, WV. It is my belief that the town of Wingrove, near present day Oak Hill was the site of the Wingrove mine. The family intermarried with the Lively family, who were also pioneer settlers in this area. Some family members were teachers and preachers.
Part of the family moved into Iowa during the early beginnings of that state.
ENGLISH ROOTS
John Wingrove entered the USA in the late 1700's as part of a court imposed order, likely landing in the colonies of Maryland or Vermont. John served in the Revolutionary War between USA and England. Some information is available on his pension applications that were never granted. His family were part of early Virginia and West Virginia, settling also in Fayette County. The family eventually moved further north over the years into the neighboring state of Pennsylvania. A large lineage can still be found in PA.
