WINGROVE HISTORY > CANADA > NEWFOUNDLAND
The island of Newfoundland is situated off the eastern coast of North America between the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. The province called Newfoundland is comprised of the Island of Newfoundland and Labrador a portion of land on mainland Canada. References to Newfoundland are found as early as the 1500's as early discovers would sail past this island as they followed the water routes to present day Quebec and Ontario. Much of the early industry in Newfoundland was connected to the fishing industry.
Newfoundland became part of Canada on March 31, 1949, as the tenth province.
Entry into this province of Canada seem to be in the post- 1900 era. This area was slow to receive new immigrants from other areas as much of the land and climate were suited to the hardy adventurer.
Surprising enough the first Wingrove that I have found in Newfoundland records is from a 1921 Census return that lists a native of Burlingham England as a lodger in one of the boarding houses or hotels of Grand Falls, Newfoundland [1921 Census - Part 1 ] George WINGROVE born May 1866, married, is listed as a papermaker and the returns do indicate another papermaker also in the residence owned by Wm J Petrie. This Wingrove family may have connections to those Wingrove Paper Makers in Wisconsin.
There are few additional entries later that suggests that these families may indeed be descendants of the original papermaker George Wingrove.St Stephen's RC Cemetery in Stephenville NFLD

s/o Mary & Charles WingroveThe first daily newspaper in Newfoundland, the Evening Telegram, appeared in St. John's , the present provincial capital, in 1879 and has been published ever since. The only other daily published in the province is the Western Star of Corner Brook. Thus an early need may have been established for the need for paper on this island.
