from WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND to MARYLAND, USA
The Establishment of an American WINGROVE Lineage
DATE: NOVEMBER 10, 2000
AREA: WILTSHIRE, MARYLAND, VA
The following lineage was
prompted by a submission of the WINGROVE Plot in Loudon Park Cemetery in
Baltimore Maryland by Michael Higgins.
This Plot consisted of 3 Headstones in Loudon Park Cemetery, 3801 Frederick Avenue,
Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The Wingrove plot is near the fence line that faces
Frederick Road, Section G, plots 169 & 133.
Additional information on each of the headstones was supplied by Theresa
Torres as many of those listed were part of her lineage.
Craig Reekie supplied additional data from research conducted by his
Uncle. This search does suggest a different beginning to this
Lineage; Jesse Wingrove is replaced by Adam Wingrove s/o John Wingrove,
& Mary George, and Thomas Wingrove Sr. marrying Elizabeth White
instead of Elizabeth Matthews; [indeed they may be the same person.]
Susan Moziar, February- April 2004, added additional details regarding
the marriage of Jesse Wingrove and Anne Hinton in Wiltshire, England.
Although the research is not yet completed, nor is there agreement
on the entire lineage, what is important is the establishment of a
Wingrove line that originated in Wiltshire England and immigrated to the
eastern coast of the USA. Additional study will have to be
undertaken to fill in this line both in the USA and Wiltshire for many
Wingrove individuals are located in both places.
At the moment there is no indication of the arrival time in the USA, but
the marriage of Thomas Wingrove to Elizabeth Matthews in Henrico County
VA, 03 June 1847, does
provide at the very least, a 'before' date.
There also appears some evidence to suggest the Thomas R Wingrove, may
have had at least one other sibling who also traveled to the USA,
crossing through the Midwest before settling in Texas - Rueben
Wingrove There may also be other sibling in
America and in the local villages of Wiltshire, England.
Other Wingrove families from this area in Wiltshire have immigrated to
British Columbia, Canada in the early 1900's
[ see: Descendants
of Joseph & Fanny M Wingrove ]
At this time, these do not appear to be connected.
Without the cooperation and submissions of Michael, Theresa, Susan and Craig
the following would not have been possible.

HEADSTONE DISCOVERY DURING RENOVATIONS
from Jane (Wingrove)
Johns
22 September
2004
Here are images of the un-used tombstone that was
found in the foundation of the house on Montgomery and
William Streets in the Federal Hill area of Baltimore
City, Maryland.
The property at Montgomery and William Streets was
once the location of the monument business of
stonecutter, David S. Wingrove (1857-1926).
The tombstone was found when the property was
renovated a couple of years ago. When I found out the
house was being torn down, I found out the name of the
contractor (Roy Cox). I contacted the contractor and
explained that my great grandfather, David S. Wingrove
once had a monument business at the location being
renovated. The builder told me that they had found a
tombstone under a set of stairs. It looked as if it
had been tossed there to fill in the space under the
stairs. They wondered about the stone but until I
contacted them, they had no idea why the stone was
there.
FRONT
BACK
The following information was found on the stone:
ANNIE E. WINGROVE
DIED
DEC.27, 1895
AGED
47 YRS
SISTER
on the back of the unfinished stone are the initials
C.B.W.
Annie was David's sister, the initials on the back are
probably those of his first wife Clara Belle Stuck.
Both Annie and Clara Belle are buried in the Wingrove
Family plot at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

Remembering the Soldiers. – We understand that the ladies of the Union Station Methodist (Rev. Geo. H.
Ray’s) Church, visited the Howard Grove Hospital, with about $1,00 worth of provisions, when several hundred
sick and wounded soldiers sat down to a sumptuous dinner on New Year’s day.
