1st-generation Ontario Canada
UPDATED: JANUARY 27, 2002

John W Wingrove  and Mary Goodwin

1st generation canada  Progenitor of the First Generation in Canada

Many of John W and Mary Wingrove's children and grandchildren left *Ashby St Ledgers Northamptonshire England to settle in various parts of Ontario Canada. This emigration took place in various stages during the early 1830's.

[
* perhaps Moulton;
There are facts that suggest that Ashby St Ledgers was not the location.
I have not come across any primary documents that support Ashby & do not know how it was
connected with these Wingroves in various Wingrove Trees

Tour of Ashby St Ledgers

The prevailing story for this Wingrove family has been that 6 Wingrove brothers left England to settle in Ontario. Although most  of these original settlers in Ontario were indeed brothers, the family lore is somewhat incorrect as can be determined from these pages.

Some of these brothers actually brought grown-up children with them. Thus family lore has to be amended to include in reality uncles and nephews. It is also important to note that none of the female line of John & Mary Wingrove are accounted for in Canada, and only one in England. Evidence also calls into question the *Ashby St. Ledgers origin as most of the children were baptized in Moulton

John W Wingrove is the progenitor of this line that emigrated to Canada. At this writing little is known about him or of his wife Mary  Goodwin. He may have been one of the sons of John and Elenor Wingrove and does not appear to have immigrated to Ontario Canada as noted above.

A brief listing of the John W Wingrove family appears further down the page with links that will take you to more details. This list presents the first Ontario Wingrove presence - all from England.

Many of this first generation were able to take advantage of land held by the government and set down roots in the wilderness or areas only recently opened to the immigrant population.  As is the case with most families, repetition of first names and the use of a middle name or a contraction, all pose a problem with identifying individuals.

1. JOHN W WINGROVE The date and location of his death is unknown.
He married (1) MARY GOODWIN. Details on her death are  Unknown.
It is assumed at this writing that both John W Wingrove and Mary remained in
Northamptonshire possibly in Moulton, but this is not a certainty.

Possible parents of John W Wingrove are John and Elenor Wingrove
   of
Northamptonshire

Children of JOHN W WINGROVE and MARY GOODWIN are:

i. RICHARD WINGROVE   1st Generation WINGROVE families Ontario CANADA

Richard is only person listed in the household
Wife and children appears in 1850 Census, but not Richard; even though the marriage may have dissolved at this point. The final resting place may be Wingrove Cemetery which exists in this area today. A Richard Wingrove is listed as dead February 1850 in MC HENRY County. IL of lung fever.

In The British American Journal Sept 10, 1835 it stated Charlotte [eloped] or left Richard on Aug 12, 1835 [apparently living in Louth Twp] Son James Hewson Wingrove born Jan 11, 1836; died Oct 20, 1871. Charlotte must have been pregnant when she left Richard.

In 1842 Elizabeth Ann Wingrove their daughter attended school  SS 6 Louth County for 6 months

Notes for CHARLOTTE JONES: Charlotte's marriage to Richard Wingrove on Nov 8 1832 at Hamilton Ontario apparently came to an end when she left her bed and board. This was advertised in the British American Journal on Aug 13 1835 and then twice more.

Charlotte bought home and lot in Jordan from Jacob Snure in 1845 and lived there until she sold it on Sept 25, 1852. This last sale was witnessed by Wm Jones whom she married on Dec 28, 1852

Links will take you to additional information on any of the underlined families above.

If you are keeping count there were  5 brothers accompanied by 4 sons or nephews.  It does appear that these families are the only source of WINGROVE lines in Ontario before 1900 with origins in England - other families entered Canada in the 1900's that were not related to the First Generation families.
There is evidence of an Irish Wingrove immigrant that spent a short time in Ontario before moving to Iosco County Michigan USA.

As always - if you have any additional information
I'd be happy to include it.
