John W Wingrove and Mary Goodwin
Progenitor of the First Generation in Canada
[ * perhaps Moulton;
There are facts that suggest that Ashby St Ledgers was not the location.
I have not come across any primary documents that support Ashby & do not know how it was
connected with these Wingroves in various Wingrove Trees]
Tour of Ashby St Ledgers
The prevailing story for this Wingrove family has been that 6 Wingrove brothers left England to settle in Ontario. Although most of these original settlers in Ontario were indeed brothers, the family lore is somewhat incorrect as can be determined from these pages.
Some of these brothers actually brought grown-up children with them. Thus family lore has to be amended to include in reality uncles and nephews. It is also important to note that none of the female line of John & Mary Wingrove are accounted for in Canada, and only one in England. Evidence also calls into question the *Ashby St. Ledgers origin as most of the children were baptized in Moulton
John W Wingrove is the progenitor of this line that emigrated to Canada. At this writing little is known about him or of his wife Mary Goodwin. He may have been one of the sons of John and Elenor Wingrove and does not appear to have immigrated to Ontario Canada as noted above.
A brief listing of the John W Wingrove family appears further down the page with links that will take you to more details. This list presents the first Ontario Wingrove presence - all from England.
Many of this first generation were able to take advantage of land held by the government and set down roots in the wilderness or areas only recently opened to the immigrant population. As is the case with most families, repetition of first names and the use of a middle name or a contraction, all pose a problem with identifying individuals.

Links will take you to additional information on any of the underlined
families above.
If you are keeping count there were 5 brothers accompanied by 4 sons or
nephews. It does appear that these families are the only source of
WINGROVE lines in Ontario before 1900 with origins in England - other families
entered Canada in the 1900's that were not related to the First Generation
families.
There is
evidence of an Irish Wingrove immigrant that spent a short time in Ontario
before moving to Iosco County Michigan USA.

As always - if you have any additional information
I'd be happy to include it.
