Return to : John W Wingrove and Mary Goodwin
1st Generation in Canada
Richard Wingrove was one of the original 'brothers' who arrived in Ontario, Canada during the 1830's. He was indeed a son, rather than one of the grandsons of progenitor: John W Wingrove that have been incorrectly labeled as one of '6 brothers'.
Richard arrived in Canada as a single man, and likely one of a few that did not have other family with him, with the exception of his own siblings. He selected St Catharines Ontario as his place of residence. He soon married Charlotte Jones of Louth County in Hamilton Ontario, September 25, 1832. Hamilton was a location that was close to his other relatives who actually served as witnesses [ George Wingrove and Thomas Wingrove, both of East Flamborough, farmers]. Charlotte's family however were in the St Catharine's area. Hamilton may have been the closest area for a minister. This marriage was to end in less than 3 years with publication August 13 1835 that a pregnant Charlotte had left 'her bed and board'. James Hewson Wingrove was born January 11, 1836.
[The family Bible indicates that James middle name may have been changed ]
Richard's life was somewhat shrouded in mystery until his appearance in the 1840 Illinois Census and the children in 1850 Census with mother Charlotte.
[ It does appear that Richard had left Ontario some time between 1836- 1840 for he appears in a 1840 Census for Illinois. He also purchased land in McHenry Co as early as 1841. We infer that this is the same Richard, for Charlotte Wingrove and the children show up in the 1850 Census with Elizabeth Wingrove's future husband ]
Charlotte ends up with the kids in Ontario. James was the second child of Richard and Charlotte. There is a record of Elizabeth Wingrove [ born June 29, 1834, 1st child of Charlotte and Richard] enrolled at School Division 6, Louth Township from the 10th day of January 1842 until the 18th day of July 1842. This school would have been near Rockway Ontario.
In 1845 Charlotte bought 1/4 acres plot in Jordan and sold it in 1852. There is some indication that she may have carried on the business of weaving at this residence. Thus she was in Illinois at some point between these dates, perhaps returning with the children for the death & funeral of Richard in February of 1850.
The female Wingrove descendants seem to have been a 'take charge' group, contrary to the role of women in the late 1800's, having established businesses. Elizabeth Ann Wingrove Jones and Agnes Denton Wingrove Crawford had a 2 story store built on King St in St Catharines. This would appear to be the store now located next to the Provincial Savings Bank as there is a 'W' inscribed on the front of the upper story.
They also started an early sub-division at the corner of Lake Street and Lowell Avenue, St Catherines, called 'Wingrove Gardens'. The two Wingrove sisters Lottie and Mayme may have been a part of this as well. [ researched Mildred Hopkins]
Richard Wingrove, as previously stated, is recorded in a 1840 Census in Illinois. This becomes indicative, since Charlotte appears in the same area during the 1850 Census with the children of their marriage, even though she had left Richard in 1838. What is surprising is that Charlotte has already bought land in Jordan as early as 1845 and carried on a business of weaving. She remarried in 28 December 1852 to William H Jones in St Catherines. Her presence in Illinois in 1850 may indicate that Richard has died for he does not appear in the 1850 Census.
A John Wingrove does appear in the 1860 Census Index in that area. There doesn't seem to be any connection as he is listed as born in Germany.
Land Patents in Illinois
The presence of a WINGROVE cemetery in McHenry County Dorr Township may indicate that more than just Richard arrived in the area, however that doesn't appear to be the case. Richard Wingrove sold the land for the cemetery, which is now in disrepair. Nothing is known of his final resting place. An entry lists a Richard Wingrove dead of lung fever February 1850 in MC HENRY CO. Illinois, the same area where Richard is listed in the land patents above. He may have been buried in the Wingrove cemetery, but records are poor.Richard Wingrove settled on this property with his wife Charlotte and three children in 1840 [ questionable]. None of his family were buried here, but he was responsible for formalizing the site as a cemetery [ Wingrove Cemetery]. Wingrove had it surveyed in 1849 and sold it for $10.00 to Dorr Township's School District 8 early in 1850 [ Richard died February 1850 - perhaps knowing that he would be buried there.] for use of the school district's inhabitants as a burial ground. All known burials are of neighborhood people. Jean Marshall who died in 1872 is presumed to have been buried here with her husband Andrew. She has a new stone in Oakland Cemetery. This graveyard, about a half acre in size, has been severely damaged over the years. Children used it as a playground and headstones were damaged and moved at random. Although the wooded site could be both charming and scenic, it has not received any maintenance for many years. [ McHenry CO IL Genealogical Society] Thanks to Susie Thorp This Society's Cemetery transcript for Wingrove cemetery list a small cemetery with headstones containing Gilbert, Scott, Lindsay, Marshall and Williams surnames.

Dated 29 Oct 1855. [*Principal & Guardians may be buried in WINGROVE cemetery ]
This seems to suggest that Elizabeth & James were living in McHenry Co, perhaps with mother Charlotte well after the 1850 Census [married Wm M Jones 28 December 1852 in Ontario]. Guardianship seems to also suggest that the children had been living with Richard prior to his death in 1850, and he had custody of the children - but these are only assumptions. Elizabeth is listed as registered in School in Ontario in January 1843. James married in 30 January 1867 to Agnes Denton - an Ontario resident born in Quebec. A marriage date is not available for Elizabeth and Albert perhaps they married in Illinois
