Susan Wingrove, the Principal Keyboard player for the Anchorage Symphony, is a graduate of East Anchorage High School and earned Bachelor of Piano Performance and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees at Indiana University. After an artist internship with the Indianapolis Public Schools, Wingrove became program director for Young Audiences of Indiana before returning to Alaska to work with Anchorage Opera and the Alaska Repertory Theatre in the early 1980's. She was the Music Supervisor for the Anchorage School District for seven years and
has taught at Bartlett High School for the past nine years (choir and acting.) Wingrove is also the Fine Arts Department Chair at Bartlett. Wingrove has also done extensive graduate work in theatre and school administration. Wingrove received a Governor's Award for the Arts for her work in arts education in 1990 and was a
finalist for Alaska Teacher of the Year in 1998. She has written the program notes and provided preconcert
lectures and docent training for the orchestra for the past twenty years. She began playing in the orchestra when she was in the ninth grade, covering harp parts on the piano. She also provides program notes and lectures for the Sitka Summer Music Festival and is a founding member of the Arioso Chamber Ensemble which features some of the principal players in the symphony. She is also the ASD coordinator for the Arts Partnership program,
a teacher-training collaboration between the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Anchorage School District, since 1991 - a project affiliated with the Kennedy Center - in which hundreds of local teachers have the opportunity to interact with guest artists and arts groups.
