RESEARCHER
AUSTRALIAN WINGROVE
I was not born a Wingrove, however married one, and various members
of our family have done extensive research on the family. As you can see I am quite
diplomatic in not wanting to claim research I had not done! Elsie
Wingrove, who is my husband's grandmother, just celebrated her 89th birthday on
August 30/98, wanted to know if you wanted our family history (the Australian end) to add
to your pages. There is quite a lot, so let me know if you do.
I would also be happy to answer Australian Wingrove
queries should there be any.

My side of the Wingroves emigrated from England in 1851 to Victoria
Australia. His name was Charles
Wingrove and was
the local shire engineer / surveyor / secretary. He came from Somerset
originally but from what town, I don't know. One of his sons, Robert
Wingrove my
grandfather, was a well known Melbourne solicitor and a personal friend of
Robert Menzies, the prominent Prime Minister of Australia from 1951
to 1966.
There are other Wingroves in Sydney but they are not directly related to
my Victorian branch of the Wingroves. There are other Wingroves in
Geelong, a city a few miles to the south of Melbourne but I don't think
that there is any direct relationship between us.
I am the last male of this line and as I have only one
daughter, the name ends with me.

Also a history of the origins of the Wingrove surname from Robin
"The Wingrove
surname is of
Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational name from Wingrave in
Buckinghamshire, deriving from a contracted form of the Olde English pre 7°
Century ‘Wihthuningas’ meaning people of Withum, a personal name
composed of the elements ‘wiht’ meaning creature, and ‘hun’
bearcub, plus the Olde English ‘graf’, grove. The placename is
recorded as ‘Wit(h)ungraue’ in the Doomsday Book of 1086, and as
‘Wiungraua’ in the Pipe Rolls of 1163. During the Middle Ages when it
was increasingly common for people to migrate from their birthplace to
seek work further afield, the custom developed that they would adopt the
placename as a means of identification. Buckinghamshire Church Records
include the christenings of Anne
Wingrave, on
September 18th 1575 in Stewkley, and Alice
Wingrove,
daughter of Richard
Wingrove, on
November 12th 1598 in Bledlow. A Coat of Arms granted to a Wingrove family
is silver, a black chebron embattled between three red mullets. The Crest
is a phoenix proper. The first recorded spelling of the family name is
shown to be that of
Roger Wingrove,
which was dated October 28th 1540, marriage to Jane
Burnam, in
Waddersoon, Buckinghamshire, during the reign of King Henry VIII,
known as ‘Bluff King Hal’, 1509 - 1547. Surnames became necessary when
governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as
Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have
continued to ‘develop’, often leading to astonishing variants of the
original spelling"

[AUS-1] Looking for fellow
Wingroves in
Australia or Ireland. Would like to receive information about immigration of Wingroves to
Australia from Ireland. I am the oldest Wingrove son of (my family) a third generation in
Australia with only myself and my little cousin (4yr) to pass on the Wingrove name, for we
are the only males left that will keep the Wingrove name. All my relatives are female. So
if you have any info on the above immigration please send me an
e-mail
