ARDEN WINGROVE:
By Arden Wingrove
I was born and raised in the Colchester District, seven miles southeast of Edmonton. My folks had a dairy
farm fronting on Highway 14 or more commonly known as the South Cooking Lake Trail.
I took my schooling at the Colchester school and completed my grade 11 and 12 at Strathcona and
Garneau High Schools.
I took two years at the Vermilion School of Agriculture.
In October of 1951, Dad bought the farm of Mrs Eva Marshall and her son Roy. As of May 17, 1952 we
became residents of the Sunniebend district.
July 25, 19xx I married Olga Shulhan. Olga was raised in the Cherhill district and we met at the VermilionSchool of Agriculture. We had six children, Deborah, Kimberly, Kent, Pamela,

Deborah (Wingrove), the first of the 6 children was born in Westlock, August 26, 1954. She received her education in

for a year. He then spent a year with the Federal Department of Agriculture, blood testing for Brucillosis.
He then worked for Belcourt for 2 years before he started his apprenticeship in Air-conditioning,

Edmonton.

Both Kim and Kent are actively involved with the Pibroch Roadrunners fastball team for which Arden

The children, while in school, were involved in different sports and in music taking piano lessons as well
as playing in the school band and taking part in different exchange programmes.
They were also very active in the Sunniebend 4-H club. They took part in the United Church Camp and
in their later years enjoyed their stay at the Gold Eye Camp.
We celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary on July 25, 19xx, and our family arranged an Open House
party for which we will always be grateful. We still live on the family farm and it is still home to the
family. They get back regularly to visit, enjoy family friendship and help whenever possible.
When Olga and I see such a happy and successful family we smile with pride!

Review Fall/Winter 2001
Olga Shulhan wasn’t initially that taken with
Arden
Wingrove. It was the 1948/49 academic year and the two were in their first year of studies at the Vermilion School of Agriculture.
“He ran for class president and I didn’t even vote for him. I wasn’t interested in him, I had someone else in mind,” recalled Olga, who is
originally from Cherhill. Arden did win the election and later on he managed to change Olga’s opinion of him.

“We started going out in October 1949 during our second year of school,” she said. Olga was taking Home Economics while Arden, who was from south of Edmonton, was in Agriculture.
At that time, the only free night students at the Vermilion School of Agriculture had was on Fridays. “We usually went to a movie that
night and on Saturday night there was always a function at the school,” said Olga. During the week, the pair would meet after study period at the college concession.
The nature of the college naturally leads to many people pairing up and eventually marrying. “We were only allowed to leave the school for home at Christmas or after graduation so the
students were very, very close,” said Olga. “Every week they changed the seating plan in the cafeteria so we always socialized with different people.”
After grad, Olga moved to Edmonton where she got a job and Arden was 15 miles outside of the
city where he was a dairy farmer. They continued to see each other and in
19xx got married and moved to the Westlock area where they raised their six children.
The Wingroves are still involved with the college and enjoy returning each June for Homecoming celebrations. In fact, Arden is currently the president of the Lakeland College Alumni Association.
