DELLITT ELIZABETH AND WILLIAM JAMES LOCKHART

Ada May and Oscar Miller Jenkins' first child, Dellitt Elizabeth (my grandmother and namesake), was born March 23, 1906 at Ada May's parents' home at 514 North Loudoun Street, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. When Dellitt was 10 years old, she helped her father at the grocery store. She remembers that he would deliver groceries by horse and cart.

After graduating from Handley High School, Dellitt attended college. She returned and taught school. She would ride the bus to get to and from the schoolhouse. One day, the bus driver was absent. Bill Lockhart took the route as a favor to his friend, and he and Dellitt fell in love instantly. He thought she was pretty cute. However, Dellitt's parents were not in favor of this man 'from the other side of the tracks'. They did not want Dellitt to see him again and threatened to not let her come home if she did. So, one night, when Dellitt and Bill reached her home, they found the door was locked. Dellitt did not know what to do, but Bill did, he said he'd marry her and so they were married May 30, 1929. (Bill was born Jesse Jerome Lockhart May 15, 1903 in Winchester to Mary Ellen Pugh and James Harrison Lockhart, but he didn't like the name so he changed it to William James.)

Bill died at age 72 at Winchester Memorial Hospital located at 201 South Stewart Street. He died August 1, 1975 of a ruptured abdominal aorti due to an aneurysm. This lasted for 48 hours from the onset until Bill's death. He died at 9 in the evening and was cared for by Jones Funeral Home. He was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. Dellitt lived for 22 years after her husband's death. At age 92, Dellitt died at home in bed in Winchester on May 7, 1998. She was cared for by Jones Funeral Homes. Dellitt was buried May 11, 1998 in Mount Hebron Cemetery next to Bill.

Dellitt and Bill Lockhart had 6 children, 2 girls and 4 boys, all of which are still living.
